Elma Monthly & history archiving discussion

Post by Lousku »

lousku.net

Hi guys, this is my project for this year. If people like it, I'll probably keep doing it next year etc.

It's a monthly compact summary of noteworthy happenings in the scene. It can be useful for people who are not really active, but would like to follow the scene anyway. Hopefully it'll also be useful at the end of the year when everyone is trying to recall things to suggest for Golden Apple nominations. I have plenty of spare time and I follow the scene actively, so perhaps I'm a fit person to do this. Let's just hope I have the motivation to keep making updates every month!

Thanks to jon for some help with the site (namely that magic color inversion button), and many others for reviewing content.

Did I miss something? Mistakes? Have any suggestions for improvement? Nice comments? Unnice comments? Post here.

Next update at the end of February.

There is a black option (click teh bullet next to archive link) but I do realise black is not a colorful color. Sure, perhaps I'll make a colorful option.

I figured this lauta thread would be sufficient, but I can add a suggestion form too.

I've only been around for about 2 years. =( Take it as a sign that the scene is not dying anytime soon. =)

Right. I missed that bullet button. Still, black and white doesn't compliment Elma's truly colourful graphics. The simplicity is nice though.

Got rid of those white pixels. I don't get why they wouldn't disappear earlier; they cleared right up just now. Anyway, here it is:
http://jappe2.net/upload/iltlgizcjjkuy/Silho720.lgr
Made for movie making (720p). I'd like to see some very detailed silhouette levels made with this LGR. Like a junkyard with ramps, trucks to drive on and nice looking bridges.
Also tell if I missed some pale dots.

This is a long project, sort of an archive of near history in Elma. It shouldn't be too interesting to read about the past month, so I don't take much stress about updating on time.

Anyway, updated for June.

Thorough history?

Okiz. This whole project is a bit silly as it it. Writing history from 2012 when there's liters of juice in the 15 preceding years? I will continue it and I'm able and willing to write it back to 2009 when I joined the scene, but what about 97-09? The info is there. Lauta, mopo news and irc logs probably hold nearly everything relevant, but this is just a fuckton of work for someone who has no actual memory of it. I could make a page for each month since the release of Across with WR tables parsed from moposite and a submission box for veterans to throw in their content, logs, memories, whatever.

Any interest for this? Ideas?

It would be very nice to make this site like an elma bible of some sorts. I say the more info you can get, the better. Maybe let others edit, or at least make some google docs or sach where people cane contribute.

sorry for bursting the bubble. lousku, you have many nice ideas, and the current application of that idea of yours is impeccable, although i must confess that i believe this is a bad idea. newspapers are to be thrown out and recycled after usage. old news are not interesting enough to anyone to justify such an effort.

efforts would best be spent elsewhere, for example over at

http://wiki.elmaonline.net/Main_Page
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elasto_Mania

just for those two cents of mine to be dropped in.

There will most likely be a suggestion/discussion section for every month.

Abula now wants me to take charge of archiving everything related to Elma. The plan is to use the newly rehosted Elma Wiki and organize all the archived content on Moposite in there. Others can then easily add more things into the great archive. This will be a great resource for Elma Monthly, we'll just have to make it first.

I assumed there would be IRC logs, but nobody seems to have comprehensive logs from 1997-2001. Any help with this would be huEG.

Order of business:
  • get this topic moved to General, SveinR? :)
  • redo layout on my site (this has been on my todo list for long, not a big task)
  • start working on an archive structure on the wiki
  • start working on the actual wiki archive (many people need to contribute to this)
  • make it easy for people to add their input for Monthly
  • write monthly entries since 1997 (they won't be completed in order. generated pages that will be filled slowly)
A bit of a project, but doable. ;)

Ofc it would be easiest to just have history sections on the wiki, but I think it's best for consistency if 1 person writes all of the final text. Any thoughts on this?
