and immediately thought about Elma. Could a certain, more complex set of rules result in playable, finishable 'labyrinth' style levels with apples and everything?

Heh that was an interesting blog. Made a Game of Life program a few years ago for a uni project, this idea sounds nice for to experiment with at elma.
