The Complete Beginner's Guide to EOL

Post by Ruben »

A while ago I started writing a guide to EOL, but it has stagnated for several reasons. Now with the recent talk of how hard it is for new players to even get started, I thought I'd just publish what I have so people can add to it what they know and what they feel should be included. Currently I'm using google docs. If you want to contribute just PM me your email and I'll add you to the editor list.

Hah, quite funny that there has been a few people starting these kind of projects separately unbeknownst to each other. Just a few days ago I mentioned on #across that I started this kind of project, and Lousku told me he started doing one as well a while ago. Your and mine formats are almost identical too, which is nice. You've made the most progress though, so I guess it would make the most sense to amalgamate our projects into yours.

I'll pm mail ->

You know how someone suggested to Mark Zuckerberg to rename "TheFacebook" to just "Facebook"? I suggest rename this to "The Beginner's Complete Guide to EOL". Noone considers themselves complete beginner anyways. And it seems pretty complete to me.

With all seriousness, this seems like a very nice work. It would be maybe good to release "The beginner's guide to EOL" asap (without GENERAL KNOWLEDGE and THE ADVANCED SECTION).

Also it is VERY IMPORTANT (imo), when people google "elastomania online", there should be elmaonline.net on the top of the first page. For me it is 6th atm (maybe it differs in different countries). A begginer does not google "elma online"...
Maybe add big tag "Elastomania online" to elma online site? Or some "your number one site for everything about Elastomania Online" under the Home, Battles, Ranking,... section.
Or is there a legal problem with that?

"Are you on a Windows computer? Oh good, it should be no problem then. Just follow these 8000 easy steps" xDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

A suggestion. When you write this or other people make contributions, please refraim from using community specific abbreviations if you dont explain what they mean. Didn't see that many now but something simple as "levpack" could be rewritten as level pack just to be ultra idiot proof.

For me elmaonline.net is second in Google when I search for "Elastomania Online". The first is elastomania.com.

I think there should be a tl;dr install guide with very simple text at the beginning, or a direct referal to it if it's located a few pages further. When a Russian kuski-to-be finds this doc he goes "Complete = ?" and closes the page

I was not thinking to publish this doc as just the wall of text it is now, but rather as seperate parts of the same web area. Preferably on elmaonline.com. That way you can just click a button and be taken directly to the install guide, or any other part if you wish. None of the sections or headlines are final either, remember this is just a rough outline at the moment. Step one is to make all the content needed, then we can start thinking of how to present it.

Elma Online is 3rd for me. Name change is actually quite a good idea. As for the install guide, it's up to the mans responsible for Elma Online to implement it. Until that may or may not happen I could publish it on the Lauta, but it's not a very intuitive place for new players to end up.

This, this is nice. I told this on other topic but i say again: i added lately over 20 software related elma stuff one the http://wiki.elmaonline.net/Programs, there is still a lot to add, but have it mind. Maybe some links or info there is helpful, or might want to add wiki link somewhere too.

A section to be added: Ingame functions of EOL (F1-F12 and their ctrl and shift variations etc) Logically following the steps after completing installation and have the game up and running.

You could say the mere fact that EOL needs an installation guide is a big FAIL.

Ideally it should be just a few words: "download this ready-to-use package, put nickname and password here, click on this exe to play".

The thing with registered version of Elma is weird: Much ppl says Balazs should agree first to have a non-paid version avaible, no one wants to upload or make it public ( and easier to install), BUT how much of all who played Elma paid it? We know where to get it, but new comers not. And while we dont make it easier to install, most of us have played free Elma during years and years.

If we had the legal rights to do so, it would be done in a jiffy. Perhaps if we all pitched in with a lot of money, we could buy the legal rights to distribute eol and lift the contract from him.

Good to see stuff like this being done. Imo split parts of it up and put on eol wiki eventually, while we can also keep some long combined PDF that's easily printable for people to read on the potty if they want to dive in.

As far as I know, while things like description/text/title etc. matters, what matters the most is how people link to it. It's very high for elma online because everybody links to it using that name, while very few will link to it using elasto mania online. But if anyone knows SEO better let me know.

Currently some people are just adding suggestions here and there for tiny changes, and while that's great I would also like those who have the time and the knowledge to begin working on the incomplete or even unstarted sections. It's very ez to just pm me your email and I can add you too the editors list so you can do whatever you want. I very much had in mind for this to be a group project. No griefing ofc.

Thank you all for the positive response =D

The installation guide should include just few clear and short steps along with account creation step. Anything else should be explained in FAQ. Optionally there should be some video guide too. In FAQ ther are thing like "Does EOL work with shareware version?" etc. This all should be hidden behind one button like "play it now", not buried in wiki. Ideally there should be package that requires elma.res and entering login and password to play. Separately J2 can make his own guide where certain file isn't necessary.

Good job Ruben. For 100 % beginners, is it valuable to start with alo volt with once?

Added a lot of stuff here and there. Too bad so many sections need some deeper knowledge of the subject, I'd rather not touch those because I have no clue. Pls everyone, go see if you could contribute with some of your experience and knowledge)

I also think the guide needs a lot of organizing too. Especially There's More? section feels a bit random, and at least partly could be merged with the Advanced Section. There's just so much information that it's hard to wrap it all up in head and think what solution would feel the most natural and best :D

I have given much thought to this, and it will most certainly change. First I would like to get everything written out though, there is really no point in organizing sections that have no content. Great work, roope =D
