Easily ignored, true, but wouldn't it be better if they weren't appearing? And is the user-acceptance by admins still in force? I think it was beneficial, don't remember any further discussions about it though (like deciding why to remove it before doing so)

User activation by admin was only in effect a short amount because of the massive spambot assault before the board software got updated. It's nice to avoid such extra hassles, both for the admins and the new users.
What is possible, however, is to make the admins having to approve each post a user makes until he reaches, say, 3 posts. It's still a bit of an extra hassle though, and as Orcc says, spambots aren't such a big problem right now.
