Re: Academy Awards 2014

Post by John »

Made a new post so that you guys could easier copy the nominations from my first post and add your comments.

If possible I'll watch the show live on TV just like I have the last 3 or so years. Unfortunately, though I'm interested I haven't had the time to watch that many of the movies yet, but I should be able to squeeze in a few more viewings before the show. Here's some of my not so insightful opinions, haven't paid much attention to the past awards season or such.

Best Motion Picture of the Year:
American Hustle (2013)
Haven't seen this one yet but should be able to before the show. Don't think I will like it as much as some of the other nominees though.
Captain Phillips (2013)
Tom Hanks decent as usual. Nice movie but not Oscar material imo.
Dallas Buyers Club (2013)
Gravity (2013)
If taking into account the experience I had the first (out of I think three) times I watched this it's the best movie of the bunch that I've seen. I'm not too sure the Academy would ever give an Oscar to a movie like this, it simply lacks that political or controversial theme that I think many of the Academy's winners have. I'm hoping Gravity will win.
Her (2013)
Nebraska (2013)
Philomena (2013)
Should be able to squeeze this on in before the show.
12 Years a Slave (2013)
Good, but not as good as expected. Seemed a bit like too much of an Oscar vehicle, like an Oscar minibus occupied by Brad Pitt, Paul Giamatti, Cumberbatch, Fassbender, Paul Dano and Chiwetel Ejiofor. They probably smelled awards already when reading the script. Possible winner. Political and controversial theme: Slavery and racism.
The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)
The best movie I've seen since Gravity :) 3 hours of pure entertainment based on a true story (which the Academy likes). If not Gravity I'm hoping this one will win.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role:
Christian Bale for American Hustle (2013)
Bruce Dern for Nebraska (2013)
Leonardo DiCaprio for The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)
I like him, I think he's a good actor with a sense of humouristic timing. Very believable as a Wall Street playboy. Hoping for DiCaprio actually.
Chiwetel Ejiofor for 12 Years a Slave (2013)
Pretty good performance although not fully buying his acting always.
Matthew McConaughey for Dallas Buyers Club (2013)

Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role:
Amy Adams for American Hustle (2013)
Cate Blanchett for Blue Jasmine (2013)
Very good performance as a hysterical alcoholic. My vote goes to her.
Sandra Bullock for Gravity (2013)
The movie was great and I liked Sandra's performance very much although it's undermined by Blanchett's performance in Blue Jasmine imo. Blanchett or Bullock ftw hopefully.
Judi Dench for Philomena (2013)
Meryl Streep for August: Osage County (2013)
Please, not another Meryl Streep nomination, so fukkin boring! She's not even that much more exceptional than anyone else.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role:
Barkhad Abdi for Captain Phillips (2013)
Pretty good for a first-timer. Not a winner.
Bradley Cooper for American Hustle (2013)
Jonah Hill for The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)
Actually not a bad performance. I hope he'll win. It would be such a huge transformation from this Super Bad actor to today's A(minus)-list star.
Michael Fassbender for 12 Years a Slave (2013)
Good, but I'm hoping for Jonah still.
Jared Leto for Dallas Buyers Club (2013)

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role:
Sally Hawkins for Blue Jasmine (2013)
Her...
Julia Roberts for En familj (2013)
...or her?
Lupita Nyong'o for 12 Years a Slave (2013)
Jennifer Lawrence for American Hustle (2013)
June Squibb for Nebraska (2013)

Best Achievement in Directing:
Alfonso Cuarón for Gravity (2013)
Created a one of a kind movie experience and co-wrote the script with his son (doesn't matter in this category). Tie between Cuarón and Scorsese below.
Steve McQueen for 12 Years a Slave (2013)
David O. Russell for American Hustle (2013)
Martin Scorsese for The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)
It's a tie between Scorsese and Cuarón. Last time Scorsese won an Oscar it was for The Departed, starring DiCaprio. Kinda hoping for Scorsese here, he's been nominated so many times without winning.
Alexander Payne for Nebraska (2013)

Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen:
American Hustle (2013): Eric Warren Singer, David O. Russell
Blue Jasmine (2013): Woody Allen
Haven't read any of the nominated scripts but I still vote for Woody Allen because of his ability to write this movie's great dialogue and because of the fact he writes his scripts on a typewriter. CTRL-C, CTRL-V impsy.
Her (2013): Spike Jonze
Nebraska (2013): Bob Nelson
Dallas Buyers Club (2013): Craig Borten, Melisa Wallack

Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material Previously Produced or Published:
NO Before Midnight (2013): Richard Linklater
I Captain Phillips (2013): Billy Ray
D 12 Years a Slave (2013): John Ridley
E The Wolf of Wall Street (2013): Terence Winter
A Philomena (2013): Steve Coogan, Jeff Pope

Best Animated Feature Film of the Year:
The Croods (2013)
Despicable Me 2 (2013)
Banana is a funny language but the minions is not Oscar worthy ;(
Ernest et Célestine (2012)
Frost (2013)
Kaze tachinu (2013)
Hoping for Hayao Miyazaki here. It's said to be his last movie and I think that if this movie is a good as any of his other Studio Ghibli movies it's worth an Oscar.

Best Foreign Language Film of the Year:
The Broken Circle Breakdown (2012): Felix Van Groeningen(Belgium)
L'image manquante (2013): Rithy Panh(Cambodia)
The Hunt (2012): Thomas Vinterberg(Denmark)
Go Denmark! Good movie.
La grande bellezza (2013): Paolo Sorrentino(Italy)
Omar (2013): Hany Abu-Assad(Palestine)

Best Achievement in Cinematography:
Gravity (2013): Emmanuel Lubezki
Hardly any desire to go to space anymore. Now I've seen what it's like! My vote goes to Gravity.
Inside Llewyn Davis (2013): Bruno Delbonnel
Nebraska (2013): Phedon Papamichael
Prisoners (2013): Roger Deakins
The Grandmaster (2013): Philippe Le Sourd

Best Achievement in Editing:
12 Years a Slave (2013): Joe Walker
American Hustle (2013): Alan Baumgarten, Jay Cassidy, Crispin Struthers
Gravity (2013): Alfonso Cuarón, Mark Sanger
I don't know how to judge editing but I liked the overall appearance of Gravity.
Captain Phillips (2013): Christopher Rouse
Dallas Buyers Club (2013): Martin Pensa, John Mac McMurphy

Best Achievement in Production Design:
WTF is Production Design? Booking catering?
12 Years a Slave (2013): Adam Stockhausen, Alice Baker
American Hustle (2013): Judy Becker, Heather Loeffler
Gravity (2013)
The Great Gatsby (2013): Catherine Martin, Beverley Dunn
Her (2013): K.K. Barrett, Gene Serdena

Best Achievement in Costume Design:
American Hustle (2013): Michael Wilkinson
This...
The Great Gatsby (2013): Catherine Martin
...this...
12 Years a Slave (2013): Patricia Norris
...and this, all made it look true to the period it's set in.
The Grandmaster (2013): William Chang
The Invisible Woman (2013): Michael O'Connor

Best Achievement in Makeup and Hairstyling
Dallas Buyers Club (2013): Adruitha Lee, Robin Mathews
Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa (2013): Steve Prouty
:D
The Lone Ranger (2013): Joel Harlow, Gloria Pasqua Casny
I guess my vote goes to this one. Not that special any of the nominees imo.

Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures, Original Score:
The Book Thief (2013): John Williams
John Williams has composed some of my favorite movie themes but I haven't seen this movie nor heard this score yet.
Gravity (2013): Steven Price
Very pompous at times and subtle at times. Surely contributed to my goose bumps. I'm hoping to see this as a winner.
Her (2013): William Butler, Andy Koyama
Saving Mr. Banks (2013): Thomas Newman
Philomena (2013): Alexandre Desplat

Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures, Original Song:
Despicable Me 2 (2013): Pharrell Williams( "Happy")
Frost (2013): Kristen Anderson-Lopez, Robert Lopez("Let It Go")
Powerful, I like it.
Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom (2013): Bono, Adam Clayton, The Edge, Larry Mullen Jr., Brian Burton("Ordinary Love")
Alone Yet Not Alone (2013): Bruce Broughton("Alone Yet Not Alone")
Her (2013): Karen O("The Moon Song")

Best Achievement in Sound Mixing:
Gravity (2013): Skip Lievsay, Niv Adiri, Christopher Benstead, Chris Munro
Great use of sounds (and the lack of it). Winner?!
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013): Christopher Boyes, Michael Hedges, Michael Semanick, Tony Johnson
Also quite impressing since so much of the movie is CGI and sound is artificial. 2nd place if the Academy would have such an award.
Captain Phillips (2013): Chris Burdon, Mark Taylor, Mike Prestwood Smith, Chris Munro
Inside Llewyn Davis (2013): Skip Lievsay, Greg Orloff, Peter F. Kurland
Lone Survivor (2013): Andy Koyama, Beau Borders, David Brownlow

Best Achievement in Sound Editing:
All Is Lost (2013): Steve Boeddeker, Richard Hymns
Captain Phillips (2013): Oliver Tarney
Gravity (2013): Glenn Freemantle
See Sound Mixing.
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013): Brent Burge
See Sound Mixing.
Lone Survivor (2013): Wylie Stateman

Best Achievement in Visual Effects:
Gravity (2013): Timothy Webber, Chris Lawrence, David Shirk, Neil Corbould
Please win. Just amazing visuals.
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013): Joe Letteri, Eric Saindon, David Clayton, Eric Reynolds
Looks pretty fake at times. Legolas started botoxing btw?
Iron Man 3 (2013): Christopher Townsend, Guy Williams, Erik Nash, Daniel Sudick
The Lone Ranger (2013): Tim Alexander, Gary Brozenich, Edson Williams, John Frazier
Star Trek Into Darkness (2013): Roger Guyett, Pat Tubach, Ben Grossmann, Burt Dalton

pretty exhausting read. Just as I read the first several lines, I realised, I haven´t seen any of these films so far. Shiat. But I guess I will grab Blue Jasmine soon, as well as the American Hustle. Kate Blanchett has never disappointed me.

Yeah, sorry for that wall of text but I'm hoping to read more of those from you guys (Boomer?). Dame Zweq, you've missed out on some nice movies. Gravity most of all should be viewed in a movie theatre but there are other ways to enjoy movies. Rent, stream, download or whatever. Could also vote for hottest actress or something + Best Original Song can be searched for on Youtube.

It's been the same thing for many years for me now: I like the Oscars and it's cool to watch and root for your favorites and stuff. BUT in recent years I haven't really watched new movies, this year the The Hobbit: DOS being the only one I've seen. Around this time every year I try to get myself to watch some of the nominated movies but rarely I find the time for it.

I was quite disappointed by 12 Years a Slave, I thought the overall theatre-like direction and acting didn't match the depressing plot at all, some scenes seemed downright funny (people at the cinema were laughing). And it wasn't touching at all for me, I don't know if the main character just wasn't likeable enough, the backstory wasn't good enough or what but it just didn't work for me. Also, like some people at imdb.com said, it didn't feel like 12 years at all, more like a few months max. So yeah, I'm puzzled by the ratings and everything.

My guess is that best motion picture will go to either American Hustle or Wolf of Wall street.
Best actress goes to Cate Blanchett imo.
Best actor to Leonardo (?),
Best animated motion picture: either Despicable me 2 or Frozen, as well as Best song will be a battle against "Happy" and "Let it go". I'd like to see both awards going to Frozen :P

No freakin' clue about the rest...

Saw American Hustle last night. Can't tell if it was me being very sleepy or if the movie wasnt interesting enough but ányway had max trouble staying awake. Hope it doesn't win any big awards at the Oscars although I'm afraid it will :(

Gravity or Wolf of Wall Street ftw. Maybe I can squeeze in Her tomorrow afternoon, pretty excited about that movie.

Gravity won 7 Oscars o/ Don't think 12 Years a Slave deserved to win Best Picture but as Ellen (who did a great hosting btw) said, either 12 Years a Slave wins the Oscar or we're all racist :P Cate Blanchett not a big surprise. Dallas Buyers Club winning both male lead and supporting actor, guess I must have a look when have the opportunity. Overall a good show and deserving winners.

Best part about gravity was not knowing anything about it and coming in with zero expectations, only to leave the cinema with goosebumps and wanting to watch it again immediately.

Gravity or Wolf of Wall Street ftw. Maybe I can squeeze in Her tomorrow afternoon, pretty excited about that movie.
I liked American Hustle more than Wolf of Wall Street, actually it's my favourite of the Oscar nominees this year and will porbably stay like that. I have no plans to watch 12 Years a Slave.

Sister went and saw Gravity and said it was the worst movie she'd ever seen.
