Re: Music thread
Does anyone here play or has played the violin?
I've been thinking about learning violin and would like some beginners advice from a violinist (or someone who knows at least anything about violins).

Re: Music thread
If you have a guitar or piano, try testing your finger co-ordination on that. The first year of learning violin is pretty grueling because you can never tell how well you are adapting due to your bowing and finger technique having to improve before you can focus on playing more complicated stuff. If you can do complex things on guitar or piano (ie. harder chords and jumps) then you'll have passed the first step to learning a bow instrument.Lee wrote:Does anyone here play or has played the violin?

Violin is an instrument that takes dedication and if you are looking for a casual instrument, i don't recommend it. If you have the dedication to put in years of work and practice an unhealthy amount, go for it, you'll love it.
E: Also you'll do well to practice sight-reading music a lot. And by a lot, i mean A LOT.

Re: Music thread
Thanks for that Haru. Gives me a lot to consider.
Re: Music thread
i hate when moved from piano to guitar. On piano hign tones are right (or up) and on guitar high tones are down. whatta heck? still playing teh piano. Violin seems bit hard and expensive just for trying...
Re: Music thread
Now I want to see how the fak your piano is positioned. And guitar, for that matter.
then again i don't know anything

Try playing the guitar with strings reversed, if that helps you.Tigro wrote:i hate when moved from piano to guitar. On piano hign tones are right (or up) and on guitar high tones are down. whatta heck? still playing teh piano. Violin seems bit hard and expensive just for trying...

Re: Music thread

Re: Music thread
Seriously, just quit whining and start playing. I have found that the only way to get around all the handicaps of the instrument is by practising more and expecting less. You can play beautifully on it, but you have to be very critical of what sound you're producing and always compare yourself to the people you think can really play. Rhythm is the key I think.

Tigro: If you aren't willing to learn a method just because it is a little uncomfortable, maybe guitar isn't for you. You do not become a good musician without really hard work and lots of pain.

Re: Music thread
i was tortured for 8 years when learning piano. that´s enuf. then 3 years brake, now playing again. i actually never wanted to play guitar well. it was just an experiment...
Re: Music thread
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4iIrg4DM078 how hard is this piece supposed to be on synthesizer for absolute beginner? just wondering because i couldnt nail the fucking 2hand coordination and it drives me nuts! and im talking about without using echo
Re: Music thread
Very easy. I'm a drummer so I guess my word doesn't count. It's just limb independence and I'm guessing it'll come with practice.

Re: Music thread
Suffering exactly the same problem as Zweq here every time I try to play the piano, and it causes me to quit it right away. Using two hands simultaneously is super hard indeed.
Re: Music thread

but it's 100 times harder than moonlight sonata!

donno, feels worse for me than the early 70s and 2000s KC
just like all the music from the 80s feels way worse for me than 60->70s and 90->2000s :)
i hate 80s. imo the only artists who managed to do great music in the 80s are peter gabriel and andreas vollenweider

Re: Music thread
Definately, I don't listen to alot of music from the 80s at all, but imo I do think KC did some pretty great stuff in the 80s The addition of Adrian Belew made them sound kinda Zappa/Talking Head-ish prototypical Primus.Pawq wrote:just like all the music from the 80s feels way worse for me than 60->70s and 90->2000s
