Re: how to pronounce stonehenge
Noep, it's æ. There's only one way to pronounce each vowel in Finnish, and ä corresponds with æ. Wouldn't you say it's much closer to this than this (sound samples on the right)?Haruhi wrote:Actually the way you and rooples pronounce teh is:

Re: how to pronounce stonehenge
say: "hoyl at" feels difficult to combine back and front vowel, hence you say "höyl at", then you dont pronounce the 't' and you got a höylä. You'll probably try to say hojlä or something. heh, should use phonology instead of letters

Re: how to pronounce stonehenge
In both sound clips you guys uploaded the sound produced was an "uh" sound such as in "pizza" rather than an "a" sound such as in "cat"
I don't know whether that's on purpose or the finnish accent is just stupid, but you guys definitely use /a/ not /æ/

Re: how to pronounce stonehenge
The "a" in "cat" is not an "a" sound at all, since we're talking about phonology. Maybe it's hard for you to hear the difference as an Aussie, but consider this:Haruhi wrote:In both sound clips you guys uploaded the sound produced was an "uh" sound such as in "pizza" rather than an "a" sound such as in "cat"
and the fact that any Finn will agree that our pronunciation is correct. Source for that quote: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%84Lousku wrote:There's only one way to pronounce each vowel in Finnish, and ä corresponds with æ.
Also, I'm pretty sure I know my own language. ;)Wikipedia wrote:In Finnish and Turkmen this is always [æ]

Haruhi, maybe make your own recording. I can imagine you'd say "höyla", since you're not used to hearing a difference between a and ä. If you're able to pronounce it somewhat correctly, then I have no idea where you're coming from.
Also, inb4 "arguing on the internet yada yada". Phonology and shit is interesting to me.

Accent does matter. For instance, a redneck will title himself as a "redneck" and it will sound like "reyadneck" whereas an upper-class british accent would pronounce it as "red neck"

Yes i know, what i mean is that what i'm perceiving as you saying the /æ/ sound is sounding to me like an /a/ sound merely because i am unused to your accent

Hahah, better than I expected. =D
The second file is a bit on the border of "a" and "ä", but it's much more towards "a" than ours. I'll still blame the fact that you're not used to a clear difference between the two sounds. Wikipedia wouldn't lie. ;) The last one is pretty much spot on. Nice job. =D

I understood that, but our pronunciation is simply correct (ask anyone who knows Finnish), and Wikipedia states that ä is always æ. Therefore we say it correctly with æ, right? :) Yes, I have blind faith in Wikipedia.Haruhi wrote:Haha you misunderstand me. Google Translate is neutral. It's programmed to say æ, and this is what it sounds like: http://translate.google.com/#fi|en|h%C3%B6yl%C3%A4. Does that seal the deal for you, or do you hear some significant difference between our recordings and the sound sample from that link?
