Re: Work
When I get back from my orchestral tour I will be typesetting music for a company. It's not bad money either.
Re: Work
Flew to Stockholm 6.30 this morning, attended course about leadership in Uppsala from 9.30 - 17, ate at some thai dinner in Uppsala and flew back to Luleå at 21.10. All this because I recently became shiftleader trainee at work o/ Will be some middleman between our boss and the rest of the employees. Today was the first out of three courses, the next one for us will be this fall most likely.
Re: Work
Dame, John. We could've met in Uppsala if you wanted to. :(
I guess you ate at Amazing Thai? :)

Didn't really have the time for meetings :) We had the course at Filmstaden but the thai restaurant was just next to Royal.Hosp wrote:Dame, John. We could've met in Uppsala if you wanted to. :(

The first scientific article, to which I have contributed: http://arxiv.org/abs/1210.2811
It's now only in Arxiv, which is a place that publishes pretty much everything, but it has been sent to a real journal also (Physical Review E), and there they will very strictly check everything and almous certainly order to change stuff. It will probably take something like 6 months before it's up there.

I didn't understand anything of the article btw, but good work!

I type musical scores into Sibelius program. Part of my success is being able to fluently sight-read and coordinate - meaning I can input the notes faster than the score takes to play in real time.abruzzi wrote:wat typesetting is

what version of sibelius do you use? i have sibelius6, and ofc, making it for free. but it takes me much time to find out how certain things are doable.

Abstract seems strong. However, is it normal to make use of the "we" pronoun in such articles? I have seen cases where articles of great content suffer from certain inadequate forms. (May not be the case for yours, though.)
Congratz, though, for the of-contribution publication.
Re: Work
It's basically a standard way of writing abstracts and introductions, but in the paper itself it looks a bit out of place to me too, would be interesting to hear from n-o-m. At least in math papers i haven't seen such pronouns used that often Usually, instead of "we consider", simply "consider" is used. Same for "we define", etc. However, is it normal to make use of the "we" pronoun in such articles?
And congrats with a finished article of course I'll have to get 3 papers published in the following 3 years for a ph.d., and i've got zero so far, so i envy you a little bit, hehe.

I use Sibelius 6. However, I am a proficient sight-reader and have my keyboard hooked up to the program to do ultra-fast input.Tigro wrote:what version of sibelius do you use? i have sibelius6, and ofc, making it for free. but it takes me much time to find out how certain things are doable.
Re: Work
After lots of practise, it doesn't take me too long at all. I guess that is why I am getting paid.
Re: Work
Nowadays I work on 3 different contracts, for 8, 8 and 4 hours, but with some paid overtime. One of those 8 was meant as an internship, but somehow turned into a normal job after I decided not to go for my master's degree this year (don't know when/if I will). On top of that I sometimes do additional work for my own little company I'm developing in concert production. The pay of my basic salary is barely enough to live from, but I'm getting by and I can spend more time on sports and guitar, which suits me very fine. Work is overrated.
Re: Work
Thanks for digging that up! I'm still active for this study association, and still doing two projects there (without pay) that take about 4-8 hours weekly (12 around January to May), If I look back I can definitely say I am far more efficient these days. I put lots of time back then in being the chairman, but a lot of time back then went to drinking beers, being a representative at meaningless meetings/networking nights, parties and stuff. It felt a lot like a job though, because I went to every activity we organised or every other thing we got invited to and eventually you grow tired of parties too.
Also, I had to learn a lot to be where I am now. When I look to the newer people who took over my place about a year ago, and now again in September, I see how slow progress can be, and how they think they really work hard. The definition of working hard is relative, but I feel as busy as ever, eventhough I spend my time completely different than two years ago. My schedule tells me I actually work more hours now than back then, eventhough I claimed to work 9 to 9 back then. I guess that was just me being busy in my head all day, harhar. Silly younger me.
December will be really busy. I have a week where I will fly to Milano to transport instruments from there to the next concert in Versailles, after that Bordeaux and finally Rotterdam. the 1st and 2nd December I do not work, but after that I am working every single day through December, except for Christmas and the 31st. On some days I work only 4 hours, but I can tell by previous experience that not having any days off really gets to you. Luckily we have November first, that month seems less busy (yet) =))

I think that they use "we" pretty much in physics. For example one professor whose course I took had been writing a book about the subject and used its nearly finished version as lecture notes. And not only "we" was used everywhere in the book but he also himself referred to it as "our book" even though he had been writing it completely himself.anpdad wrote:It's basically a standard way of writing abstracts and introductions, but in the paper itself it looks a bit out of place to me too, would be interesting to hear from n-o-m. Compulsory three papers sounds pretty tough. In Finland you don't necessarily have to write any. I was just lucky to get involved to this through summer training at uni (and I'm just a master degree student).
Re: Work
I'm not arguing whether your paper used it too much or not, but it seems to me acadamic papers and physics books often use different language, as rules as a rule are more strict upon paper publishing, although that sure varies according to book publishers.nick-o-matic wrote:I think that they use "we" pretty much in physics. Anyway, I'm sure it's "point taken," I'll look into that. And indeed not as important as content, at any rate.

I work at the Swedish Social Insurance Agency as an insurance officer within the activity grant and development allowance. Since the 1st of October, I only handle cases where the customer has been absent due to illness more than 7 days and (because of that) need a medical certificate.
Yep, that's about it.

Re: Work
Yesterday I got a new job in ElectroWorld.cz. I am the guy who wrotes info about new items on the internet
I am quite happy with it, it's not very hard to do and it is also slightly creative (there is always some basic info about the item (technical parameters), but the whole "package" is done by myself). I am doing this as a part-job (~20hrs a week), I also study hard (no joke), I should be writing my Bachelor's work in the meantime and I also need to find time for my gf. Life's getting hard.
edit: and also elma

Re: Work
I am now in a hotel in Versailles. I worked about 55 hours last week, starting on monday, ending on sunday, but not on wednesday because migraine/cold attack. Then on monday I worked another 13 hours, got back home, went to sleep at 3 AM, woke up at 10 and packed my stuff for flight to Milano in the afternoon, where I arrived at the conservatory hall at about 6 PM after 5 hour trip. Then I packed the stuff after a concert by a pretty wellknown baroque orchestra and drove off to Versailles with another driver, with a short stay of 3 hours in a hotel (where I probably left my passport). We put all stuff on stage 2 hours ago and now I'm figuring on grabbing diner and sleeping a bit before we pack the stuff at 10 tonight, then drive off to Bordeaux tomorrow at 6 AM. Then friday driving to Rotterdam (me to Amsterdam/Purmerend to fetch fresh trousers). Saturday touring again with another orchestra and choir, throughout Holland, until wednesday 19th, when I'll be doing my regular office job (with some nifty task deadline set before christmas), after which the tour continues again until the 23rd. 24th office job again, and then finally christmas and the first day of no working in a full 22-day period.
Re: Work
I am getting paid for doing nothing. The easiest job this week! It doesn't sound that tough now though when I say I have already worked over 70 hours now - but believe me, I am exhausted and I have mostly been working very hard.
Re: Work
Been working at a day care for a few weeks now. Ok job as it's pretty stress-free, mostly need to watch after the kids (ages 1-6) and play with them. One thing that's pretty uncomfortable is that some 3-4 fatherless kids are almost fighting each other on who gets to sit on my lap. They cling to me most of the day and call me daddy, probably because I'm the only male worker there >.>

I got some small jobs in January and one 40h job in February, but now it's very silent. This means just working 8 hours a week on 3 days and the rest will be filled with playing music and that kinda stuff
This also means not getting paid a lot, but alas, I will survive.
