Total Time Cup [Ended]

Post by Pab »

I wanna make Total Time Cup. The idea is to have a competition in 10 levels at the same time in 3 weeks (discuss?). At the end of it, best total time wins, simple. It can be hosted in elmaonline and i would take place once nin cup ends. Promo video

------------------------------------------------ edit 06-Nov
Congratulations Bjenn!!!!!!
05:38,91 total time, over 10 seconds lead!!
Thanks everyone for playing!!

I choose 3 weeks because i know not everyone have the time to hoyla 10 levels in a few days, or a week. To give the oportunity to more people to join and give it a try at least. The levels are pretty normal looking, possible to finish for anyone, hope you like them!! The level in the video is one of them.

Nin's master race cup ends today, after that i'll announce the start date for this one.

I made the 10 levels, didn't rly want to depend on anyone to make it fast :D it's quiet improvised cup but a cup at last. I always wanted to make a TT battle in EOL and this is the closest it gets. This will be my first cup, i have good hopes!

Why not make it one month?) Easier to remember dates x/y -> x/z instead of x/y -> x+21/(y||z). Dunno how to write but you get the idea)

yw 1 month was the first idea but the only comments i got on the time were "is too much" and now i also think it is.
Not that hard to remember a deadline date, we can choose an easy date :D Im willing to put the date on bold and underlined text if necessary!

Cool! The name seems a bit generic though and unfittingly "official" perhaps. I mean, World Battle Cup was ok as a name since it was like a big and epic event with levels made by the whole community, but if you're having a simple cup organised by just one person then maybe it should have a more humble and personal name, if you know what I mean. Just my two cents.

I understand what you say kuchitsu it is very generic, but im confident enough to make "official" stuff. Anyway i think the levels reach good design standars, as i said i didn't spend any time asking anyone for levels to feature in the cup, this was very improvised yet not something i do effortlessly. I just want to make it quick and simple, in case it is a "success", more cups can follow it with pertinent adjustments to be found in the execution of this one.

But if that is a common opinion then, the name can be changed, for now it stays.

That clock shows time in your selected timezone. But you can just check time for your timezone on the cup page deadline when it's up.

Oh i see, my time zone settings said GMT -12:00 but once i pressed update, the time dropped 2 hours, the time the site showed to me before pressing update was GMT +2:00. I update first post, this last one is the time zone that i use.

gg all who already got TT, don't forget to upload your replays before december 6th.

btw to quickly see your times:
  • I made some time ago a stats level maker PLSM, you can add the pattern "TTC" or "TCC1??" for example and press Go, and you will see your TT without having to generate a stats file, you can generate it later if you want.
  • Or even better use eolconfig.exe: 1. Close EOL 2. Follow the steps in this image 3. Done, everytime you quit elma (i think) TCC1.txt is going to update your stats.

lol thx for the image Pab, didn't check before so had to find out the hard way (trial and error). Apparantly * also works instead of ?

I must say really cool levs that made me want to make another (better) finish right after the first one. Also sick styles possible. Very nice Internal connections that are quite obvious but not boring.
Might play some more if time is right... (Pab plz reming me in eol to submit replays when deadline approaches) :)

nice insguy ! glad you liked. I will remind you!

I guess the pattern is like put
  • ? when something goes in that place
    * to match anything that follows
so "TTC1*" and "TTC1??" works the same, unless you make a remix or some level that is like TTC1xxx coz the first pattern will match it.

It's a faulty link on some of the pages, the correct is http://elmaonline.net/statistics/cups/6/mytimes, regardless my times is not made with multiple events at once in mind, so you can only see them from one level.

I understand that for some people 1 week would have been more than enough, but i personally sometimes don't even find time to play an 1 week 1 level event of a cup. The whole cup is under one idea, i wanted everyone to be able to play, and thats also why the levels seem so uncomplicated.

edit: im happy that so many ppl showed interest in the levels too! :D i agree that right now the deadline seems far for those who already hoyled most levels, i hope you don't lose motivation. The time will pass quick as always and it seems like its going to be a rough competition, hopefully very fun too. Close to deadline i will remind everyone to upload their replays:)

Because you uploaded times, there's two sections, uploaded times for all events and all finishes for current event, the latter which isn't working correctly here.

some constructive feedback: i love this cup & the levs are amazing, but the whole formula with total time makes me play the longer levs like 97% more than the hoylas because it feels like the most effective way to play this kind of cup. of course i will try to hoyl the hoylas as well, but it feels like i won't bother too much with those short levs. if you decide to do ttcup2 my suggestion is to create a system that punishes the player for not trying hard with every lev and the most elegant solution i can figure out is that 50% of the cup results are based on looking through the result list, lev by lev, and the player with best time in for example ttc201 is by definition beated by 0 player and therefore gets 0 points (lower number is better). if a player ends up on 5th place in ttcup201, that player is beated by 4 players on that certain lev and gets 4 points. and so on. so, to make a good result in the cup, you need to play every lev as optimal as you can. the other 50% of the cup results are based on total time. so, for example, if a player get the following imaginary results in the levs (8;3;13;8;4;1;7;5;3;9) <-- no that's not a smiley it just looks like one . . . the player gets 51 points (if my math is correct) and let's say the player gets the 7th best total time he beats 6 people and i just forgot how to balance the two 50% deciding things so i will sleep on it. it kinda made sense in my mind but yeah whatever good night. the point is that you risk to fall very far behind if you make much worse ride than other players in a single lev so consistency is key. the thing with normal cup point distribution is that you can make very good result in one lev and get like very many points, then get 0 points in the next 4 levs but still have alot of points, so this system will kinda force you to play every lev

The obvious and maybe kinda serious problem with your approach is that it's a lot more confusing than simple and easily understandable TT counting. And I think having transparent rules is quite important. Imo if a player has to perfrom a bunch of mathematical calculations to understand why he deserves the position he's got, that's kinda bad.

Maybe making levels of approximately the same length is a more elegant solution...

No, different lenght of levels is also important. I don't like oftas idea, it's smart but it makes it weird at the same time. Simple TT is best, you will hoyl all levels as good as you can anyway, in the end times can differ with half a second or less, then you will regret not playing the easy improvable shorter level 30 more minutes.

Good post by Bjenn. I've been surprised how many seconds it's possible to hoyl off the shortest levels with right styles etc., you really shouldn't count them out as useless. Also, as I've understood, one main idea that Pab had here is that the cup is easily approachable for all players, and having diff length levels and a simple tt count helps.

Making individual level positions count would kinda defeat the point of a total time cup where TT is all that matters...

I can see ofta's point here. If you find a big shortcut in one lev and are the only one to succeed in it, you can win the whole cup even if you have average times in all other levs. Same kind of thing in normal cup wouldn't give you so big advantage.

Still I think that just counting the total time is better option. It's designer's fault if sach a shortcut can be done.

I think there can be many good ways of doing a cup like this. This one might do good as a base for a future cup.
Ofta, we can check your points system with the results of this cup to analize it :) i can help you do the maths if wanna.
As for the levels lenght and time to play, we can make some quick poll see opinions as statistics, that might help too :)
And as roope pointed out, i wanted to make it playable for everyone and thats maybe the strongest reason of why there is no 10 huge levels. I agree that someone can play the levels with some sort of strategy but it depends on your skills, personally i suck on hoylas and in this cup i believe i would have lost about 3 seconds against the best times combining the two shortest levels, and that might be very bad for me )

One idea that i wanna repeat coz it might be very nice, is to make poss to play tt battles in eol. That sounds like a nice battle mod, duno if poss tho.

There is just a little bit more than a week ahead for the deadline!! Remember to upload your replays to register your times!! I will spam the next weekend so no one forgets, make this week count!!!
