Logic Test

Post by Lee »

http://www.think-logically.co.uk/lt.htm

I found this logic test online. It is only 15 questions long. I think many elmans are highly logical thinkers and I'm interested in seeing some results.
I took the test and got one question "wrong", but I happen to disagree with the answer. I won't reveal which question I got wrong until others have taken the test. Then I can explain my reasoning.

93% Hello, i said valid for the last question. I am not going to say i got it wrong, cause i dont think i am wrong :/

"a)Water is a molecule composed of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom.
b) Every observation or examination by microscope has confirmed this.

Conclusion
Therefore we can predict that every future examination of water will reveal the same chemical composition."

the premise defined water as H2O so we couldn't even examine 'water' in the future that isn't H2O, it wouldnt be water and needs a different name. I can predict, but don't even really need to, what's the problem here?

I made the same "mistake" as gimp, and I my argumentation is the same. If a) defines what water is, it isn't induction to conclude that every future examination of water will reveal the same chemical composition (unless of course there is the possibility of a future examination being wrong).

This is the one I got wrong:
a) Jenny lives in Paris.
b) Paris is in New Zealand.
- Therefore Jenny lives in New Zealand.

Valid (but not true because Paris is not in New Zealand!)
I answered invalid because there is no indication that the Paris in a) is the same as the Paris in b), i.e. I'm not assuming that there is only one place in the world named Paris and so cannot jump to the conclusion that Jenny lives in New Zealand.

Lee if you make that argument then you also make the argument that if:
a)all ducks quack and
b)Donald is a duck
Conclusion Donald quacks is invalid because we don't know that Donald in the conclusion is the same Donald as in premise a.

Of course it is valid because with premises you kind of have to just forget that the rest of the world exists and keep in mind that the premises are the only reality that the conclusion is using.

Statement B suggests that statement A (water = h2o) is what has been observed and confirmed so far and therefore it is not the ultimate truth. There's no statement that says that if the chemical composition is found to be different by future observations, the examined thing will have to be given a different name rather than having its chemical formula revised.

imo, (water = h20) is true, bcz all statements are true we think.
Statement B means nothing.
And in future someone can make a mistake in examination. So INVALID

I got Paris wrong (same reasoning as Lee. There could be easily city named Paris in New Zealand, so the correct answer surprised me) and H2O wrong (I kinda knew I was wrong, but still checked "valid").
