Believe it or not, the battles DID happen 8O Dunno if anyone bothers to vote the levels, but I think the voting should be done in a different way. Now we are just ordering the levels from best to worst, but it would be more suitable to give individual points for theme, playability etc. This current system does not tell how "good" the level is, just its relative ranking to other same theme levels. This makes it impossible to compare levels from different themes. Well, we'll see how long this competition even runs.

You voted correctly, i also asked Hosp to ask people to vote using the built-in EOL voting system for their favourite level.

The battles were hosted several days before the site went down. I am aware that it is fun trying to poke holes in an already battered competition, but this time you are just making a fool of yourself and wasting my time, lou.

Re: Level of the Month (LOM)

Well, as i'm sure a couple of you have figured out, rather hilariously the EOL site update abolishes the ranking system, and so all the votes done on there are gone.

Thankfully, i looked before the update and also received some votes by pm.

So the winner for march, with an interesting interpretation of the theme, is zebra with his level "Riding on the Clouds"

Congratulations to zebra! The levels have been renamed with the designer name in place, and you can download them here

--

The voting system needs to change due to the rating system on EOL being removed. The tendency of people nowadays to refuse to vote on lauta makes this hard. I'm inclined to agree with VJ and say we should have a criteria/rubric system, but i doubt anybody will actually vote like that so i'm kind of hesitant to do just that. Perhaps it's worth getting a jury of 6 or so people to vote on the levels every month, they can also think of themes and that way the competition doesn't suffer if i'm distracted or unable to be there.

Lee suggested that i should be more specific with the themes, the opposite of what i tried to do with the first two. There was complaints last time in LOM that the themes were too specific and people couldn't make the levels different enough, but i guess that idea doesn't appear to be the same nowadays. Anyways, i'm request all of you send me a few theme suggestions in pm if you have them.

Post suggestions if you brilliant thinkers have better ideas regarding voting system too.

Received one level btw.

New theme: Only rectangles/squares can be used. They don't have to be perfect squares but try and make them close.

I remember the level jon made, it looked like it was made with the popular kind of new game, what is it called? you dig the ground and build houses, kill cows and sheeps and taking their wool. My point: it consists of only squares.

This thread is a hilariously sad read, but I think we could still squeeze some fun out of this contest format. How about making it less strict? Just announce a theme and people will submit levs publicly. No need for anonymity bongo, I think we can ez detect design styles anyway. Voting and winning might not be necessary either, but if that's the carrot people need, then sure. This way designers can just use teh monthly theme whenever they feel like getting really creative with a beisik balle lev and post here with a link to teh balle page on elmaonline.net. Not much unfun effort for anyone. This kinda stripped format maybe wouldn't be carrying teh ultraofficial abuapproved moposite premium "level of month" title, but who cares? Let,s just having a fun times! =))

Themes seemed to be a problem too. I'll pull some ideas out of my ass in hopes of hitting something more captivating than "nature" or "fantasy":
- across
- what's wrong with elma nowadays
- single polygon labyrinth
- spectrogram
- planets
- anthill
- rastaman vibration
- teh great polygon war
- chill lounge lev for afking/chatting
- ramonish lev
- zweqish lev
- TLish lev
- etc
then again i don't know anything
maybe easier not to think abouut alöl things thought than not things thought ... or something..=?

Ok, I start. Anthill theme sounded fun, I made a quick lev in it. Don't want to battle it though, isn't really battlelev, but I'm happy if some people play it.

Next person make a lev in one of the following themes:
  • teh great polygon war
  • Duck robbery
  • Teapot extermination
  • Quadruple victory
  • Octopus bullying a monk
  • Stinky cows
  • Redneck strawberry
  • Badass cupcakes
  • Evil rabbits in heaven
  • Mexican unicorns
Edit: Ok this would probably defeat the point of LOM, so... let's just go with anthill for a month?

I'd say it's a great idea! Maybe a way to rejuvenate the scene a bit :) how did it work before? Some symbolic awards?

I guess we could just post suggestions from battles and packs here, and at the end of the month start a poll topic to choose the winner. But yeah, I think would need some small award system to put some value to this. Any ideas? Maybe a congrats post on moposite, or a special lauta status "LOM winner" or sth? Physical awards every month would be too difficult i guess :/

Some ideas:

Tunnels and Caves (I've seen many many great levels during the years, and a tunnel lev with the proper colors has a really great atmosphere.)
Mother Nature
Artificial Intelligence (I think I don't need to comment this =) )
Modern Technology
Two decades of Acrossing
Christmas (cuz its here soon =) )
Fruits
Planets

Not to mention the fact that we have now fancyboosted elma... The possibilites are endless...

This way may actually work better than the way LOM worked in the past. As we saw in 2012 when Haruhi tried to restart LOM it didn't go so well. Basically have people suggest good levels from that month's battles and newly uploaded levels on eol, and at the end have a vote. It could be made pretty much automatically so we don't need an active organizer. Some point system and a yearly winner, that may encourage people to make at least one good battle level a month.

The problem as I see it is that so many do not use the original LGR. So impsy make interest around design. Many also uses default ground sky.

Don't get me wrong. I used to love making organic levels in jungle style etc. But the feedback was never enough to keep the intetest of spending hours in the editor.

Ah. One of the key reasons why making high quality levels is almost not worth the effort.

It often feels like people call you out for being an idiot for taking the time to decorate your own levels. "Why would anybody play with pictures on?! It's distracting blabla"

I don't bother anymore
