Umm, that it's the only number with the value 40?

I'm sure there are lots of things about the number 40 that you can't find in any other number.

Forget "only value" and stuff. The answer is a bit out there, but it is quite coal.

The word you're looking for is 'integer'. :)
Ky.Jelly wrote:39.000*

The correct way to write that is 39.000... . Of course that's pointless; you might as well just write 39. You only need to do it like that when you have a number like 38.999... (i.e 38 followed by an infinite number of 9's, which by the way is exactly equal to 39).

Too technical, sure, but you started it. ;)

in nz we put a dot over the last recurring number/s but i cant do that on here so had to resort to *,

im sure we had some number chart at school saying the a number and whole number and a raw number where different things, but that was long time ago and i prolly wrong :roll:

No its not! It's about as close as you can get, but its always gonna be 0.000000.........00001 less...ok, ok, its infinate, but still...

about 40 anyway, its the only number that can be x*x*10 and x+x*10 where x is z(original number)/20... 8O

No, it is exactly equal to 39. "About as close as you can get to 39" is inifinitely close to 39, and thus equal to 39. There are several ways to prove why 0.999... = 1; read any of these links:

That's just because 4 is the only number x for which SQRT(x) = x/2 (i.e, because 2 is the only number x for which x^2 = 2x). Whay you said might be the answer (I doubt it :)), but it's still pointless to say it that way.

I know it is...seeing as one third (1/3) x3 is 1...and one third is 0.33333...
but it annoys me...it should be 0.9999999999...........

anyway, I wanna know why 40 is so good...

If you knew, why did you say it wasn't?

Anyway Jalli, I don't think anyone's going to get this one without hints. It's hard for us to know just what you're asking for.

K. Sorry if it's already been said.

Scheming Suzie is afraid of monsters hiding under her bed. She usually runs from her bedroom door and leaps onto her bed so the monsters cant get her. Even though Suzie's bed is 4m from the door, she manages to switch off her light and jump into bed before her room is dark. Since Suzie doesn't use any device to flip the switch, how is she able to accomplish this remarkable feat?

That took long enough too type.... no-more long ones and less u really want them.

edit: by the way chux I'll restart the comp if u want. I just looked at the first page and realised what this topic is about :D

I think I maybe took most of the short ones...
Here's some maths for u:

1: If A = 3 + 1/3 and B = A + 1/A, then B = ??

2: The average of A and B is 20, but the average of B and 15 is C/2. The average of A and C is then?

3: Given a regular square with sides = 2. Each of the 4 corners of the square is a center of a circle with radius = 1. Let S be the largest circle that touches (is bars the correct word? only touches in one point) all the 4 circles, and let T be the smallest circle that touches all the four circles. The differense between the areal of S and the areal of T is then?

4: The last digit in 3^10001

5: Let ABCDEFGH be a regular octogon with all sides and angles same size. What is <HBC?

4) I think chux was right, isn't it 3?

3^1 ends with a 3
3^2 ends with a 9
3^3 ends with a 7
3^4 ends with a 1

3^5 ends with a 3
3^6 ends with a 9
3^7 ends with a 7
3^8 ends with a 1

since 10001 is 4x2500 + 1 will 3^10001 be the first of a row like above so it will have a 3 as last digit

Oops, my mistake, edited last post now...

Right, Is thiswhat you mean Jalli? (heh heh, I made that on paint)

Heres what I got so far...
If the sides of the square are 2, then the hypotenuse is Root8. With the radii of the circles added on, this makes the Diameter of S Root8 + 2.
Also, you take away two radii from root8 to get the diameter of T...Root8 - 2
So, the formula of the area of a circle is Pi.r^2, so you have to divide those diameters by two...but because root 8 isn't an integer its really hard...so thats where i gave up.

Anywhere near anything Jalli?

I saw at Q3 at school and think I solwed it.

First i use pytagoras to find out the diagonal of the square.
square rot of 4^2 + 4^2 = 2.83
With that i can find diameter of T

Td= 2.83-2 = .83
r= .41
AT= pi*r^2= .54

AT = .54
Diameter of S equal diagonal og square + 2 = 2.83+2 = 4.83
r=2.41
AS= pi*r^2 = 18.3

I don't remember if diferanse is when you substract or divide so i don't do that.

"I hear you have three children, Fred," said George in conversation. "What are their ages?"

"Well," said Fred mysteriously, "the product of their ages is 72, and they add up to your house number."

George thought for a moment. "You haven't given me enough information," he said.

"You're right," laughed Fred. "I'll tell you this: my eldest child is learning the oboe."

"That ill woodwind instrument that nobody blows any good!" smiled George wryly. "But at least I now know the answer to my question."

Do you?

1. Gloria Goodbody opened her own clothing store called "the wrap". She wasn’t sure about pricing certain items so she devised her own method. At "the wrap", a vest cost $20, socks cost $25, a tie cost $15 and a blouse costs $30. Using Gloria’s pricing scheme, how much would a pair of underwear cost?

2. Sid Shady, who was sporting a large fresh bump on his forehead, was found lying on the pavement just below the jeweller’s window. The ambulance attendants were reviving the unconscious Shady when detective Shadow arrived on the scene. Shadow questioned several eye witnesses and arrested Shady the moment he was coherent. Shady did not have a criminal records nor had he confronted or spoken to anyone that day. Why would shadow arrest him?
