Introducing the OMG Pipe Tournament :o :o

Post by sierra »

had like a coalz idea.

anyone who wants to enter signs up before it starts, and once it starts you can't joinga if you didn't sign up.

players play against each other 1v1 in a knockout format on pipe levels every week. these matches could be seeded or they could be random, i don't know.

this way the tournament would inevitably reach a quarter-final, semi-final and final stage. i feel this format would be incredibly exciting since the pressure of 1v1 would persuade good players to really play hard, unlike cups where, for instance, some people might just aim for top10 or they might just want to get a decent time. in this tournament the potential for embarrassment is much higher since the spotlight is on every individual, and consequently the contest is much more thrilling to observe imo.

oh, and of course it has the added bonus that at the end of it we get a Pipe Champion

what do you think

Could be interesting and fun.. but then everyone at the top of the pipe game would have to sign up..
Was it cast for the mass who burn and toil?

Perhaps they would.. but for instance, in the Pipe Cup (or what it was called), there were not that many participants at all. But a setting like this would, for me anyway, be far more interesting so maybe, maybe..

well this format is pretty scary for those who like to keep a reputation up but it's also an opportunity for less-known pipers (The X-Ray??) to make an impact. i know at least Jalli always complained about how much pressure there was for him in WC515 so maybe he would back out altogether. i would hope not at least ;/

I would definitly participate, great idea.
The Pipe Challenge was organized in a time where pipes were less popular so, i guess more people would join this one...

and Jalli can deal with pressure...

Why don't we do something like the Champions League format? If we have enough people of course.... There would still be knockout stages to put some pressure on but the group stages would allow people to not play only one game (which will be my case, anyway).

All noobs whining about the format. It's simple, you get one shot to totally embarrass and own your opponent for the rest of his life, and if you fail and you get owned then you suck and wouldn't have won the tournament anyway. There will be no groups, no best-of-3s, no qualifiers, simply because if you want to truly own then you should own everybody that comes in your path, at all times.

Though having said that, there will be a slight safety net for those who lose. Some simple mathematics will tell you that only numbers which are powers of 2 (i.e. 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64) would allow a flawless knockout format with no leftovers. Since we're more likely to get a number of competitors which is not exactly a power of 2, then the system will be roughly as follows:

If you lose, you still have a chance at progressing to the next round if you beat a sufficient number of other losers. e.g. it might be necessary, to make the numbers nice, to keep 5 of the losers from round 1. This means that even if you're paired against axxu in round 1, don't just give up, because you can beat all the other losers and maybe get paired against jaytea next time. Lal.

Or like the Football World Cup/Europe Cup

1on1 Battle in each country and the winner/s are qualified to the World Cup

and then qualifiers do a World Cup 1on1 battle

These ideas seems cool for Elma...
maybe Abula could have some yearly Cups

Random. So yes, we might see some big-names facing off in the first round, and quite frankly i hope we do.

I'm not whining about the format I'm just giving another idea that I think would be fun to do some sort of elma competition of. I don't really care about the format, it's not as if I'm thinking of winning whatever it is.

sierra I have an idea, how about players themselves decide pairings where both sides agree, so tijsjoris doesn't get paired with John... more fun with equally strong opponents. at lest in the first round/qualification whatever.

All pairings will be totally random. Sorry if this frightens you. Picking opponents would take forever and would just be boring. Besides, who would volunteer to take on a really good player??

1phatman1 i appreciate the offer but that would give you a bit of an advantage don't you think ;

and btw a lot of people haven't noticed that neither Jalli nor John have entered :-/
