Personally I prefer the idea of everyone playing the same levels together till the end. That way the most consistent player wins and you're not so likely to get eliminated too early by for example one guy getting a lucky run in head-to-head battle. Sounds good that in the first events there are more people eliminated. The final showdown could be held during one night dedicated to these levs, with only eliminating 1-2 players per battle. This way the total duration would be short and people wouldn't need to arrange time for so many days total.

Let's say there are 40 players in the first event and next events are every Saturday and Sunday. It will be next to impsy for anyone to be able to play every weekend for 20 weeks in a row. This type of cup works better with longer events, a couple days minimum
