I think you should not reinvent the wheel. There are a lot of time-tested rating systems, like topcoders system or chess ELO system. Take a look.

The main thing we need is a good rating system. Winning battle with 50+ players, including Zweq, Markku, etc. is much better than winning battle with 3 noob participants. The best system I know is TopCoder's Rating System.
