Mopobattles (the resurrection)

Post by zebra »

So, I'm going to start organizing the mopobattles again after a long pause. Please read these rules carefully before your first mopobattle.

I know there are an older topic for mopobattles but I posted this new one because I need some place to advertise them (and we talked with Abula).
Whenever a new mopobattle is coming, I try to remember to advertise it here (editing this post). edit: in my site, see the link below.

I will keep first some of my own battles with my own levels, but after that you can send me your levels to zebra@mbnet.fi and I'll pick the best ones from those. I really need your levs. Otherwise the number of mopobattles won't be very high.

Rules and coming mopobattles can be found from my site:
http://koti.mbnet.fi/zebra/mopobattles/news.html

After battle you have another 30 minutes to send your rec
So in other words, you have 59 mins to play?

If you say a time better than what you really have gotten during the 30 minutes of the battle, and then in the next 30 minutes manage to get that exact time, well, I guess, yes.
Was it cast for the mass who burn and toil?
Or for the vultures who thirst for blood and oil?

Aww, too bad my army starts soon. Hopefully I'll have time to play some battles before that.

Well, at least the winner is supposed to upload his rec right after the battle has ended, so at least you can't cheat the winning time. And because you have 30 minutes time to send your rec doesn't mean that you could höyl that time.

You have 30 minutes instead of 3 minutes only because there can always occur some kind of technical difficulties.

If anything new was added to mopobattles, and since there is a new organiser... to have more timezone friendly mopobattles. (eg: 12.00-15.00 sundays or something). Its great that zebra is organising it, because he would pick appropriate levels and keep the mopobattles frequent. :D

Do you mean nick at IRC? That we should always have same nick at IRC?
As to me it seems that's the case. What if somebody loses his/her nick, for a reason or another; surely you can modify the registration to allow the other nick to point in the earlier registration, thus being able to continue mopobattles with the same elma nick?

If you change your IRC nick, you can easily register the new nick to the same player, like this:

<zebra1> register: zebra [TAP] (FIN)
<zebra2> register: zebra [TAP] (FIN)

If you don't want to do this, you can ask me to modify your registeration. But this way it should be easier, because it wouldn't matter anymore which nick you are using in IRC.

Why don't you use hostmasks instead? That way the bot will recognize the player no matter what nick they have (unless they've also changed ISP).

Sure, but if you use the right mask it rarely matters. It's hardly ever a problem with battlebot, is it?

Well it isn't, but if your talking about the isp part of hostmask, masking part, that can be the same with many people... Maybe I'm just not understanding what you are trying to say.

I hate mopobattles because of too hard levels. Imho the levels should be short and easy that everyone could participate.

FOR FIDO'S SAKE, NO SHORT HOYLA LEVELS PLZ.
They should be still around 40 seconds long, yes, a bit easier so our younger battlers and some veterans (hi Karlis!) can finish them.. There should be hard pro and faster styles but an easier variation too.

*!*user@*.host will work as long as you have the same ISP and the same User ID (mIRC > Options > Identd).

And I agree that the levels should be easier. At least the two last ones have been too hard.

I can't use hostmasks, because my program only reads the log file. The bot isn't anyway connected to the results, it's only cyre's own bot and only used as a timer. A mopobattle could be easily battled without the bot.

Sorry, maybe i overestimated the players' skills. There will be easier battles soon, i promise. But I think ppl won't like the levs like warm up in mopobattles either. Don't think it's easier to win the battle if the lev is easier.

That's because i'm working at daytime. But if I have time on weekends I will arrange battles for you as well. I may have time next weekend, but right now i'm waiting for the wcup schedule.

But still, unfortunate for you, I will arrange most of the battles at evenings, which means around 19.00 EET - 24.00 EET. That's the time when most of the ppl are in irc. You just happen to live on the wrong side of the earth :(

We had today those 2 battles which were designed to be at better time for ppl from other side of the world. Still no australian ppl were present. And there was only 12 ppl in each battle. This means that i'm not arranging very much battles at this time. Maybe we should decide a certain weekday and time so that it everyone would know the date. Would there be more ppl that way? Or is it just wcup and summer?

Anyway, I made a site for mopobattles, see the first post.

The time could be 21.00 EET or 22.00 EET. Which one of those would be better?

I don't really think it matters that much. People will join whenever the battle is if they really want. People who are whining about bad times won't come eventhough you would arrange when they want. Maybe I'm wrong.

There are two things that bother me with Mopobattles today.

1.The results are not in Moposite. Now when you think the term 'Mopobattle' you link it with Zebra very easily. That's not a good thing. Mopobattles should be linked with Moposite and give you the most 'official' feeling without linking it directly to an arranger. Of course there always has to be an arranger but still the main 'arranger' should be Moposite. I hope some day the system gets into a point when results can be updated directly into Moposite's database. But it looks like the 'new' system will be incomplete forever so I really don't have high hopes. (I don't mean to sound harsh intentionally)

2.They are not arranged regularly. The most best way to arrange something and except competitors to take part, is to let the competitors know when to take part. What better way could there be than making the battle every week at the same day and at the same time. It isn't easy, I know. There are other solutions as well.

Try this: have a informative topic on Mopolauta place at "Announcements" area. Read only topic which tells you when the next Mopobattle occurs. Very easy way to get attention of Mopolauta users. Use it!

1. Yes, I'm also worried about that. I'm already tired of uploading the results and stuff in 2 places (to my page and to moposite). Abula should make something to paprika, but seems that he has much else to do at the moment.

2. We had regular battles during the winter, it was always on thursday at 22.00 EET, but in the spring I couldn't anymore arrange them at that time (regularly), and I got tired of the day/time. Surely it's better to remember it if it's on certain day, I might return to that when paprika gets ready, not much motivation now at summer when players are always under 10.

Try this: You mean we should advertise on mopolauta instead of moposite? I still think moposite is better.

1. Yes, it's easy to say but 100 hours of work at minimum needed. Well, practically it's vk's stuff but he has million other things in queue as well. I might consult him a bit but I'm pretty sure we shouldn't go there before Community and Records sections (which have influence to almost everybody, compared to Mopobattles of which about 20 players are interested in). Also the Contests section needs some base work at first, to create the contest engine.

Why not helping me with IRC stats by finding nick aliases? Or donate some money... I wouldn't be asking this all the time if we didn't really need it.

Mopobattles are now over. This is mainly due to lack of players.
I uploaded all levs, recs and results in one pack.

See more info from http://koti.mbnet.fi/zebra/mopobattles/news.html

Today there were 2 battles played:
