Movie: Elma Done (fairly) Quick v1

Post by skint0r »

I think I started planning this right after milagros had made the first version of the pcx dumper, but the project has been on hold for quite some time because I wanted to wait for him to fix the animation bug when turning. He finally managed to fix the bug some days ago and I started working on this again.

It is a movie done in the spirit of Quake Done Quick type of movies, basically a run through Elma as fast as possible using the best publically available recs. I'm sure there is a level or two where someone has a better rec available, but I've tried my best to find the best ones I could, with some help from both Luther and axxu. I'm pretty happy with the results either way, the final totaltime I managed to get it down to is 36:56,80

I initially wanted to do the movie in 40fps, to get as smooth playback as possible, but no matter how hard I tried, I wasn't able to encode it with any codec without getting lag for some reason. I was on the point of giving up the whole thing then, because dumping the pcx of each lev, sorting and converting them to png is a really painful process. I had to start over from scratch with a 30fps movie, I think the results looks alright though.

I've encoded 3 different quality versions on the movie: a high quality 700mb, medium quality 433mb, and a low quality 342mb version.

HQ 700mb: archive.org mirror or filefront mirror

MQ 433mb: filefront mirror

LQ 342mb: filefront mirror

That's awesome! Hoping for more great elma movies in the future.

You screwed up the date in the end credits by the way. It says 2005-01-17.

Argh, so typical ;(

And for the curious, here's a little frame comparison between the different quality versions, although it's quite different when watching it as a video, you can at least get an idea about the quality difference between them.

Alrightey. First of all, and obviously, I dumped the pcx files with mila's program, and converted them to .png files. That step isn't necessary at all of course, but it certainly helps to keep the space usage down, specially when you have some ~70000 frames which quickly takes up 10gb as pcx.

I then used VideoMach to import the frames and saved them as an uncompressed avi file. You could use DivX/XviD/whatever directly in this step, but if you're going to work further with the file it's nice to have the best quality possible instead of compressing already compressed files and further degrade the quality.

An alternative to using VideoMach is Avisynth, but it's a bit more complicated tool, I'm not going to explain the usage of that since it's a bit hard. Definitely something to learn if you're going to do some more advanced video work though.

Anyway, I then opened up those uncompressed avi files in VirtualDub and used a filter called subtitler to overlay the level name, time and nick. Then you just save with whatever codec you like.

Well the thought behind making the movie was to perhaps get it distributed and watched by more than just the people in the scene, something to show people that don't quite get what Elma is about or whatever. The movie isn't really much news to anyone here, I guess most people has seen most of the recs already.

But I probably won't submit it there, SDA seems to have so many rules and criterias for movies, and I'm just too lazy to write and explain everything. If anybody else would like to try and submit however, be my guest.

Yes, I know. Unfortunately mila did the patch with the 1.11hb (?) version where the option of moving pics to background isn't available.

the patch is made on the first version of 1.2 (not public I think) where there isn't this option but there is change resolution and zoom option..
i'm lazy to remake it to 1.2

Who cares if the pictures aren't in the background?
If you want to show a guy a movie about elma he needs to see the true version of it.

erm....bla.
first off: i care. though it is very nice work, i would have liked to see the driver or wheels all the time.
second: it is NOT the true version anyhow. as you may noticed, the bike is centered, very likely the resolution changed and at least downhill forced to ground/sky.
further:why would he has to see it in original? if he would like to start playing afterwards, it would be a shame to let him play version one.

Nice! Taking a cup of hot tea and lay down on a bed and start watch a show of skill that Elasto Mania can give was really great experience.

For me this format worked to detach from being a player or viewing it as a training guide or being a judge of the skill. It felt more like a show Elasto Mania is able to create. Watching this video I came up with opinion on which levels are most genious. Curvaceous and Zig-Zag being the biggest, but almost all levels max colourful \o/ Just have to exclude boringness of Warm Up at first though :)

The amount of skill and tricks that I don't personally master (43.3x.xx my total time) was countless, and I first thought this is the reason I can view it like I viewed it. After this I came to conclusion, that it was because of the state of mind. I started to watch the video as a show, and it worked nicely.

I liked the music, it fit in for me, and I was feeling like I would liked to have known the artist name and the song title when a new song started, but probably skint0r thought, that it is unnecessary. It is a little ruiner, if someone wants to watch it without the audio, so maybe it is better this way. I was happy to see the song list in the end texts. :)
