FPS limiter patch published / leaked

Post by dz » 6 Apr 2008, 15:48

I don't know if some of you already have the FPS limiter patch, but I certainly didn't until today (monday 31th), after I found some links floating on elma irc channels.

So have you tested the limiter a lot? How do you like it?

Besides setting the elma game FPS value to anything between 30 - 999, it is supposed to remove the delays when having a very low frames per second, and the movement is laggy. I haven't tested this myself though.
It's interesting to finally see this released. Of course it's not like this is any "cheat utility to easy world records", but more of an utility to make life a lot easier.

Adjusting FPS has been a fact for years, and several methods have been tried, such as opening certain applications on background to affect the FPS in some way, for example lowering it a bit to a desirable value.
There is also a list of internal level suggested FPS values.

In the beginning changing FPS was limited to simply changing vertical synchronization (vsync) to either ON or OFF. When vsync was set to on, FPS was limited the current refresh rate (Hz) that your monitor could handle, in other words, was set to.

For example on my old CRT monitor the maximum refresh rate was 144Hz, so in this video mode I got 144FPS in elma, when I set to vsync on. When I set vsync off, the FPS was as high as my computer could do. So basically in the past it was either 60 - 144, or maximum that my computer could do (which I think was something like ~400).

Let me quote Zweq and his comments about his recent Flat Track WR, which was driven with FPS limiter:
Zweq wrote:im ready to admit the program saved 0,01-0,02
It gets interesting.

P.S. I was writing this exactly six days ago, I just didn't push "post" button. Then I had immediate offline perioid until today, and I haven't checked what's been happening concerning this. So pardon me if I don't make fully sense. :-)

yeah the 0,01-0,02 is very rough estimation, 30fps bike simply rotates faster than 60fps(cant really get lower with today's computers) bike so of course it helps a bit, kinda logical. is it as much as 0,01 then, I can't say.

concerning that internal level list from 2004: nowadays I'd say 30 fps is best on everything that don't require 1. brutals 2. certain grips / hangs 3. uphilling. For example warm up is impossible with 30 fps because you dont have grip on the turning. Loop de loop is impossible because you simply dont have grip after the uphill for some reason.

However touch is a different case when talking about internals. It's like a whole other game if you try 999 and then 30fps. I mean it's really ridiculous difference. It takes several days to get max pro with touch on some level if suddenly make the switch. Is several days much then? I don't know

So have you tested the limiter a lot? How do you like it?

since I have had it I have used it on flat track and some battles only. Rest of the time it has been set on 999, which is the same fps I had when the prog did not exist. in fact I had 1800 fps without timer visible.

it's very useful for those who wanna try brutals or do annoying low fps stuff like animal, sink, shelf life. problem for me personally is that I had kidna hoyled all to max already before I had the prog, so after the huge hype I posted right after I got the prog was a bit exaggerated :P.

but still...! the keypress delay removal is the biggest difference. If I wanna try doing 1.13 animal it's ridiculously easy to get on to it now. dont have to get used to the delay

great to "hear" from mila =)
I tested the limiter over the last two hours and for me it is much great! =)
I have a feeling of much more controle espacely in pipes. I played rotationaly with "normal" elma and high fps elma and I managed a pipelev much oftener with high fps.
I allways thought its kinda imagination that high framerate is so much better but it is really much better ^^
Now I definitively delete normal elma ;p

Do you set fps to 999 or is there any disadvantage?
I set it to 300 atm..

Ah, what me helps alot was the hint that the patch doesn't change fps for fraps, so set the fps high and feel the different or delete the patch ;p

Please, I tried many times to turn off vsync but I never succeed.
Is someone could make a video of himself turning on/off vsync or many screenshots to know where to go.

Ok one question: When my pc is able to make like 350fps with off, does fps LIMITER set it to 999 or can it just reduce fps?

If it's FPS Limiter, I strongly guess it limits... :)

It's called: S3 Grafics ProsavageDDR
But, in what the gfx card can help to explain me? I thought only a few screenshots could show how.

Because it's in your graphics card settings you turn it on and off. So how you do it is different from say a Radeon card and a geforce card. Dunno about your card but mine goes like this: http://up.k10x.net/ugbuohvhjmqgj/vsync.png

If it's an old S3 card, you might not be able to change its vsync. I have an S3 Savage 4, from around 1999, and it's not possible to change its vsync. Not in any easy way at least.
Was it cast for the mass who burn and toil?
Or for the vultures who thirst for blood and oil?

Have you tried properties on that first screen? But as SveinR said you probably can't if it's some nab card. I couldn't on my laptop either.
