GAA suggestions thread (2011)

Post by SveinR »

This is an around-the-year suggestion thread for the Golden Apple Awards. Here you can post good levs, recs, etc. throughout the year, whenever you come across some you deem suitable for the GAA. In this way, people will easier remember what candidates to suggest in the GAA voting process when it starts at the end of the year. Thus, there will no longer be as many omitted candidates at the end of the first step.

Note that making suggestions in this thread will not make you eligible to vote in the GAA third step; you will still need to make suggestions in the first step of the voting process.
Was it cast for the mass who burn and toil?
Or for the vultures who thirst for blood and oil?

Maybe the Gaa crew could take this into consideration...
Juish wrote:I think lev generators are a good idea and a bad idea. Saving time is a pro, having complete randomness is also a bonus. But complete randomness could also lead to very poor quality annoying levels. Time+creativity= how good the level is , level generators minimize both of these therefore creating lame generic levels. This doesn't mean there isn't a place for generated levels. There's times when they could come in handy in certain situations.

My particular status with any form of auto generating level is that anyone who uses these should be instantly disqualified from GAA nomination. As soon as you use a generator you do not become the level designer anymore , the computer does. So if people who use these often get a GAA you might as well give computer programs a GAA.

In conclusion I still stand by stating that the best level generator is the human mind.

But nice programming the least

If someone creates a level generator capable of producing GAA-quality levels, then he'd surely deserve an Achievement nomination at least!

Irrelevant. Either you generate many levels and pick out the best ones, in which case you are a factor in the quality of the levels and deserve recognition, or you publish (battle) every single generated level, in which case most of them suck or then that generator deserves a golden apple in another category, like SveinR said. Realistically speaking that'll never happen. Luckily it's easy enough to make quality levels quickly without generators and such.
then again i don't know anything

I must admit many things have started to happen after the leak, and not any mongoing with dynamic record sites has happened, at least to my knowledge. Simply put nothing bad has happened yet. I'd still never thank smibu, ever :P but no hard feelings either

I thank Smibu very much. Although I used this saveload for mere 2 minutes overall, I still admire his doing and his amount of balls. As an Elma user who has the access to tools (like also mila, some other #across'ers and some rus'es have) he went down from the heaven and showed us a tool most of us dreamt of (literally) to see how it works. What's more, mila has stated several times that there are just some minor changes to be done in eol.exe to make it work that way and any semi-pro could do that. So anyway how can we be sure all times like WRs, elmasite, kopasite whatever are legit? Of course there is a 100% trust policy in our community and I trust too, but I'm just stating it's not impossible some WR already sneaked somewhere by someone (remember Darm?).

On the other hand now we can see even better inhuman races, producing breathtaking vids for noobs
we can train some tricks, without having to ride whole Lab Pro, like 60 tries per minute
we can check how fast we can actually go in a level

If SL was a part of elma or shown in 2000, now we would just have already 5 SL WCups, SL battles in EOL etc. The only thing would have changed would be the times being so much better, and I doubt anyone would ever call it a cheat. I know the situation is tough for sites, and was tough for 2-3 days for WRs (lol), but it's not any provocation and I think it's all far more fair that way, gz Smibu.

<anpdad> wOOhOOO! 39.94 HB :D
<Raven> what?! 8O
<Raven> how is it possible? WR! :o
<anpdad> err.. ye WR but saved and loaded my runs to achieve mega best run i could ever think of
<Raven> OMG! Lucky you, I have always been dreaming of checking how it works... :(
<anpdad> Yes, I know. But you know...
<Raven> Yes I know...

Like any video game, tool-assisted speedruns are always positive, while normal speedruns normally require some proof that it is not saveloaded. And as usual, TAS helps non-TAS to find tricks to improve the speedrun, while being very entertaining. I don't see how can it not be good. I do believe that TA recs should be publicised and that a TAS of elma should be produced.

Can you read, my son? //Orcc

You completely did not get it. There were no "balls" involved. A few days (or much sooner) before he spread his saveload, hourglass was released and some russians found it. There was also topic on lauta for a few mins discussing it (and deleted quickly). Smibu has clearly seen his saveload sucks big time comparing to that tool so in fear he will loose "all the fame" and all his effort would be wasted, he released his nab saveload first (otherwise he would work on it a bit longer). In any case it was only a question of days till hourglass would get spread across the community anyway, I know about at least 20 ppl who already knew about it.

Probably not. They will however be eligible for an Art award, especially if made into a movie. I don't know if I will have anything to do with GAA this year though, so my word right now is not final. But I don't think they should be eligible for Replay. Style is debatable.
