Elasto Mania & Window 8

Post by dz »

I just installed Windows 8 RTM (through DreamSpark premium) and it saddens me that elma has became unplayable. It....lags....like....hell.

I know I'm a bit early bird, but has anyone got a proconfig to make it work? I'm wrecked without my daily dose of super annoying pipes.

Let's put it this way: please, write a post here if you manage to play elma with Windows 8.

To be more specific, my elma works, but the it's really, really choppy. In other words, unplayable.

I ovearheard quite an interesting discussion today about Windows: that every second Windows is good and every second is bad (ME bad, XP good, vista bad, 7 good) and from the looks of it 8 is gonna bomb too

I suppose a good case can be made for omitting it in that figure, since it's basically a version of Windows NT (and none of the other, previous NT versions are there either).
Was it cast for the mass who burn and toil?
Or for the vultures who thirst for blood and oil?

Sorta agree with SveinR. But he did miss out these in total: CE, NT, 2000, which are 3 operating systems. I guess they are sort of the same one, so I guess we have to let this slide into the anus of obscurity.

Meh, I just logged into my MSDN account and it seems my subscription expired. I must renew it or be verified again before I can download Windows 8.

Windows 95 shit? You are either trolling or you don't know what are you talking about. 3.1 wasn't that bad at its time, but 95 was vast improvement. I used them all on regular basis, expect Me and 8.

Ok final update for now from me is that I never got it to work smoothly. But there's a chance that this was caused by my graphics chip driver - there were some reports of bad 2D behavior in Win 8 reported by other users as well with all the drivers up to the current one. It's the HD 3000 graphics from second generation of Intel Core processors.

So anyhow, as new laptops and tablets start to appear with Windows 8 preinstalled, if you remember, please share your experiences. Myself I'm sticking with Win7 on my desktop for other reasons.

What I really don't like with new versions of windows is that is supposed to be more user friendly, but it always get harder to edit shit and fix simple problems. Worst was windows 2000 which was nothing but a big crash.

I have elma running perfectly now. Put the D3d windower in the elma folder. You need to select the d3d dll file in settings within the program - also set the resolution. v/easy once you play around with it a bit.

I installed Windows 8.1 today (along with an SSD drive). Without any special config, Elma fails to start (I get the SetDisplayMode error), but here's how I got it to work fairly well:
  1. Download and install DXGL: https://www.dxgl.info/Downloads
  2. Add Elma's exe file to DXGL config. It should look like this:

    Image
  3. Make sure the checkbox "Support all color depths" is checked in "Global" tab (or Elma's tab).
  4. Make other adjustments if you want.
  5. Click "Apply" (and "OK").
  6. Launch Elma as you would normally.
This DXGL thing emulates DirectDraw by translating the calls to OpenGL, so FPS is not as good as if it worked natively. But it's definitely playable like this.

EDIT: Updated the link to latest version of DXGL. It has the Alt+Tab bug fixed.

Plain Elma - 20 fps
D3DWindower - 100 fps
DXGL - 250 fps

Best solution so far, thank you.

Still can't run 2560x1440 resolution without crashing. Instead I am scaling 1920x1080 (pleb pixel resolution). Whenever I try to get into externals it crashes with 1440p.

Dunno if it's gonna help, but I used DXGL on Win7 to remedy screen falshing and it worked, but disabled alttabinng too. After uninstalling that tool, the fix's still there and switching windows is back. Might wanna try that, won't hurt for sure.

Not with the latest version (0.5.6), but it has been fixed on SVN after I reported a bug about it: https://www.williamfeely.info/bugzilla/ ... .cgi?id=39

Here is the installer for the latest SVN revision (578): http://users.jyu.fi/~mikkalle/Elma/DXGL ... -win32.exe

Uninstall the old version first. You probably need to remove and re-add Elma.exe in DXGL config too.

Btw: If the DXGL config window crashes (has happened to me sometimes), just delete the exe via regedit (search for DXGL and you'll find it).

It would be good if someone could put info about the fix on EOL site and update EOL readme file. I think most of new players that use Windows 8 might not be able to find this thread. If the program fixes all issues it could be included in EOL installation files from EOL site too (at least version for Windows 8 users).

I fixed the alt+tab bug (i prefer to use ctrl+esc) by installing a windows 7 like start menu. The 8.1 start menu was messing ctrl+esc in my case.

I installed the freeware StartW8.

Thanks for the other fixes. It worked at over 300 fps with d3d. Now I use DXGL and it works great in full screen.

Thanks for the fix!

Hello, by reading through fast here I see elma works in Win 8 after a few fixes.

Has anyone tried to run it on Windows 10?
As you may know, during the first introduction year Windows 10 is free to upgrade if you have a legit 7/8.1 Windows license.

From the last Windows Update patches came an icon beside the clock to upgrade for free to Windows 10.

I think I will upgrade soon, if anyone has it already or is planning to test it, tell if Elma works in it or not =)
I have Windows 7 Eng x64.

Microsoft has put lots of effort to the upgrade part, so that you will keep personal settings and stuff through Windows 10 if you install it. I haven't read about it, just heard from my colleagues.

My Elma seems to have survived the transition from Windows 8 to Windows 10 without any major injuries. I still have to use the ddraw.dll fix, which I can live with though. However, I'm not sure I can live with the fact that the taskbar is not transparent any more.
