World Battle Cup 2 - Discussion and ideas

Post by Ramone »

Ok, World Battle Cup idea have been tested. Suggestions ideas for a possible 2nd WBC?

Possible ideas/topics to discuss:

First Finish battles and/or other special battles
All battles 60 mins?
Who will arrange it?
Number of events, skips. Weekdays times for battles, how many per week etc.
When should it be held. Once a year?

We know the arrangement of WBC wasnt very good, but we just wanted it out there. We also wanted people to try the idea before asking about ideas.

I think the timing and structure was pretty good. 10 events (2 weeks) is a good length. It's hard to decide on the time of the battles, because there's always people who can't make it. But if you started to have the battles in different times (like some at 20.00, some at 23.00 etc) it would just be confusing for many. Once a year seems pretty okay for a battle cup; a normal cup at the same time once a year would be exhausting.

60 minutes per battle is an absolute must IMO.

I'd like crippled battles like onewheel, nobrake, oneturn etc. because they're still kinda hoylable like normal battles. First finishes and apple battles and such would be too cruel, like one fuck-up and you're done.

You old fart =)
I followed the results of the events, and watched winning replays.

I sense that this is very similar to Mopo battles but with less amount of levels, 4-6 times a year would be no problem for battle cup.
It doesn't take up much time at all, 1h per level/event! That's nothing..

I played through most of the Mopo battle levels without hassle =)

Who would be organizing these 4-6 times a year? I got the image that there are different arrangers every time.
And if there were - lets' say 5 - battle cups a year, that would be 10 weeks with the current system. You would spend 1/5 of your year playing battle cups. Of course you don't have to play, but that just takes some prestigiousness away from the cup. I'd rather have something prestigious with a lot of excited players rarely than something meh often.
And there are at least 3 other cups planned for next year too.
But yeah, maybe 2 cups per year at most would be oke, one in the winter and one in the summer.

That's just 1 hour per 5-6 days. The battle cup is every weekday for 2 weeks.

Aha I understand, okay twice a year seems more normal and human.

10 events is quite many, 5 events would be okay if you were to have the cup more often, say 4-6 times/year.

Very cool cup anyway. Good work organizers!

i'm all for having these several times a year. really it's rather silly that we (at least some of us) spend 95% of our elma playing time just playing regular battles. i welcome serious compeition in form of battles because as bjenn says it really doesn't take much time, but you can still somewhat get that dedicated feeling towards it as you can with regular big cups.
there could obviously also be quite different types of battle cups. where did ribots league idea vanish to for instance?

1) Having a World Cup more often than once a year is to me a ridiculous idea (in any sport). Rather have others organize some minor battle cups in addition, instead of having a bunch of World Cups which would completely dilute the concept.

2) I think having all 10 events over the course of two weeks is a bit too compact, especially when those two weeks are at a time when many people are quite busy (exams etc). I would perhaps rather want to spread it out over 3 or 4 weeks, with 3-4 events each week. I think having it a bit more spread out would also increase the focus on the overall standings.

3) Don't know about special battles.. maybe a few events with times shown?

4) SITE

Seriously, a revival of the Elasto Mania League concept in the world of EOL would be awesomeness!!

Let's say, to throw a suggestion out there:
  • 4 divisions, with a certain number of players each division
  • At each "match night" the 4 divisions would have one 15 min battle each, starting with the lowest division and culminating with the last. Other players than those belonging to the division would simply be spectators (this is where the organizing would turn problematic... shucks :( )
  • After each season some 2-3 players would move up or down between the divisions
Was it cast for the mass who burn and toil?
Or for the vultures who thirst for blood and oil?

I'm not asking how. I'm asking who. If there were as many as 6 WBC's per year, the scene would run out of rotation of willing and capable arrangers quite quickly.

Mopobattles died because of lack of interest. Spending every night for two weeks for WBC and Elma is just too bothersome to happen many times a year. Also again they wouldn't feel so special anymore if they are held too often.

I like the league idea more. Let's say you also have a chance to hibernate if you don't have time to participate every season, then someone else could be promoted to higher division or just play with less players.

I agree. Of course one hour of elmaing per day doesn't sound much, but i had to re-schedule most of my days a bit, to be able to play the full hour. Also the speciality-argument. More than one WBC per year is a very stupid idea for many reasons.

WBC seems like a once-a-year deal to me, but that doesn't mean other cups/tournaments/leagues can't be held several times a year.

I've been thinking about the possibility of having two different battle cups per year, WBC and some other one with special events; crippled, ff or whatever can come up with. I feel like this kind of cups are the best way to keep the scene connected but concept shouldn't be the same every time.
