World Cup stats

Post by pawq » 27 Feb 2017, 02:57

In an attempt to hype up the currently-ongoing World Cup and bring back some nostalgia from the good ol' times, here are some stats about the previous World Cups.

Note: the sections of graphs in green are increments since the last update (before the 5th event of WCup7). Since then, I have also merged different nicks of the same players that Markku, Kopaka and skint have spotted (e.g. meng=mengerle); the kuskis who appeared on the graphs due to a nick merge have their whole bars surrounded by green borders. The full list of merges can be found here:
http://kopasite.net/up/0/nick%20merging.txt

So far, we have had:
7 World Cups (7th ongoing)
112 events (113th and 114th ongoing) (+8 since the last update)
8199 replays (+474)
submitted by 1067 different kuskis (+5)
from 47 different countries (+0)
who played for 333 different teams (+1)

skint's WCup Leader Stats

Thanks:
- Markku, for digging up the archive of results from all the past World Cups, for creating a list of nick changes of kuskis, as well as for acting as an elmapedia for the whole community.
- skint, for creating a site with WCup7 leader charts, and for contributing to the list of nick changes.
- Leek, for creating the beautifully informative kuski path images.
- Kopaka, for contributing to the list of nick changes.

Looking at WC6 stats it seems that it was one of the most popular cups. I hope WC7 does even better.

Might as well put these in this topic.

Based on WC701 results.
Click images for larger sizes. This one is probably the most interesting to look at.

@Pawq: WCup 3 is the one I am holding dearest to my heart; I am a big-time fan of it. It is interesting to observe that -- perhaps ironically -- it was one of the less popular cups.

@Lousku: these graphs are awesome. Thanks for taking the time to produce them! I agree that it makes for richness of retroaction, and of the community.

It is a pity that I have no time these days to participate in these events. I will be following from the background!
All bounces are equal, but some bounces are more equal than others.

i've just made head through poly; thought i'd share:

These are awesome Lee, please continue making them for the rest of the cup as well! :)

Also nice stats Pawq, hopefully WCup7 won't lose too many players in the coming rounds.

I found this a bit odd as well, but I'm thinking it could possibly be due to the fact that it had relatively hard (for n00bs) base-times? I can't remember if any of the other cups had those.
For instance I only managed to beat the base time in events 8, 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18, so eventhough I played the entire cup I could only send in times for 6 of the levels. Beating base time was a massive achievement for me back then :)

Yes Luki, that was indeed the case, another Zero [TSK or sth] played WC1 and WC3. Markku picked it up yesterday and I already updated the datasheet, but unfortunately it got too late so I wasn't able to correct the charts then. I'll correct/update them all today (some other changed nicks were picked up too). Thanks for bringing it up though, keep the feedback coming =)

Interesting. Would love to see some recs, stats and infos from WCup1 and WCup2000. Wcup1 was in 1998 or 1999? Kind of incredible that some kuskis have been in the scene for almost 20 years.

Recs: don't have any, maybe Markku does? Extra info too probably.

And what sort of stats are you interested in? I can probably ez generate quite a lot.

Huh, quite little time between the old world cups. Especially in comparison with the gap between WCup5 and Wcup6.

I remember base times too. Not from World Cup, but I think in the Master Cups there were base times too, but you could download the basetime-replays if I remember correctly.

Also: found this and this info on World Cup 1.
Even if somone still has the recs, it's probably hard to make a decent video out of it. Is it even possible to run Across with Windows 7-10?

Yeah, but then we don't know how many kuskis played any of the other events, so the only reasonable comparison is of the number of submitted recs :) Unless you think I should put in a secondary line for WCup7 with how many played the level before the deadline?

Would be easy for some skilled stats-maker to make such stats over all.

Initially I started with idea of making some charts for this, but it became impossible to make it work in any feasible way and find a decent way to show the stats. It grew into this horror show of spaghetti code, and I already spent way too much time getting it to work, so there is not much usability or anything good about this.

Anyway: Interactive charts for each event, so you can compare the best times and improvements of anyone, and who had the lead during the days of the event. Like mentioned it's total shit show, but I don't really want to put much more effort into this project than already did.

Anyone who had the lead at some point during an event is automatically selected on the charts by default. Didn't really know what other predicate to base it on.
You can zoom in anywhere on the charts by dragging a selection rectangle
The leading time is displayed in red. Not all times are shown because it's a mess to do so and I don't know good solution.

Probably not going to put much effort into improving anything, so you can feel free to do it yourself if you want to.
