How to: Make your own contest

Post by Kopaka »

The EOL site offers various possibilities to host your own contests. This makes it really easy for anyone to arrange some kind of contest as long as you have a few levels. However the possibilities are not really documented very well anywhere, so I wanted to write a bit here on what options you have. Also to encourage people to take advantage of them, as we've seen very few contests over the last couple years it seems.

Cup
A cup is a contest where you typically play one level at a time for a certain amount of days and top 50 get points from each level so you can call a winner in the end.

Recommended preperation:
  • Make 5-10 levels, or however many events you want.
  • Consider how to get the word out.
  • Plan out the starting and ending time of events.

How to start one:
  • Ask Kopaka to create the cup for you. Have the following info ready:
  • Name of cup, a longer description, should apple results be shown, a short name for replay files, should replays be required to be uploaded, amount of events, amount of skips.
  • Then you'll get an URL where you can add events via the website.

How to add events:

1. Play level in EOL locked (turn lock new levels on in eolconf.exe).
2. Click on admin under your cup's page.
3. In top right corner search box, select level in the drop down and search for the level.
4. Copy the index number, backspace the search so you get back to admin page.
5. Put the number in level index under add event, add start and deadline and designer, remember it's in server's timezone (UTC-8).

Battle league
A battle league is structured much like a cup, except the events consists of a battle started through the normal startbattle.

Recommended preperation:
  • Make some levels.
  • Plan when you are going to start the battles
  • Make some sort of announcement of when the battles are being played.

How to start one:

How to add events:

1. Start a battle normally in startbattle.exe.
2. When the battle is over go to the results page on the website.
3. Click on add to league link in the right panel.
4. Select your league in the list

Level packs
Level packs is a collection of levels which can be played indefinitely, which will have records, total times and a points list.

Recommended preperation:
  • Make some levels.

How to start one:

How to add levels:

1. Play the level in-game.
2. Go to the page for your level pack.
3. Click on add levels link in the right panel.
4. Search for your levels
5. Click the check mark next to a level to add it.

Now go make some contests!

for future it would be nice to personalize the cup pages somehow and have links to active cups on frontpage to make them feel more important. customization could be as simple as allowing upload of some custom banner and etc graphics. kinda like that old cup framework where you could design site yourself if want but all the technical stuff was ready
