Polevault (contest idea)

Post by Abula » 5 Mar 2018, 20:51

When viewing my old elma_plans.txt from 2006 I saw one interesting idea which I haven't seen yet. Also "Olimpic games" in Russian ElastoMania Club Levels inspired more.

Roughly: who gets over the highest pole. Dunno about the start of the level, just ground and brutal volt or something more interesting?

Generate levels programmatible or even better, by the website. I don't know how to do this but obviously some people do.

If pre-programmatible, then just name them pole0001.lev, pole0002.lev, ... pole9999.lev to have as much precission as possible. Or if in the server, you could ask like "gimme 238.3px" and it would generate you the level.

This same would work with who gets up the deepest uphill.

And the narrowest pipe.

Or min/max/etc. internals like who can finish the smallest Headbanger. Many min levels would have thearetical minimum because the head touches wall in the start.

Dunno, not so easy to do and maybe most of the levels would be too boring.

Had some fun to try codepen live editing first time: https://codepen.io/lassism/pen/EQBadW (used 30 mins). Codepen seems to be good for creating quick concept examples. Looks quite mobilish :P Trivia: what ranking is this (results are fictitious)?

It would be max easy to generate the levs if you make a reference lev first. Then only the top of the pole (2 vertices) need to be moved by a simple program.

Here is EOL implementation of Polevault Olympics Competition:

Download levelpack: http://elmaonline.net/downloads/levelpack/305/poleO

Person with the highest number has the highest jump. A number of 360 = 180 pixels high at 1x zoom (0.5 pixels height per level)

In the record list, Jump height = (number+299)
e.g. beating level 61 is a jumpheight of 360.

http://elmaonline.net/statistics/levelpack/poleO#0/

Good luck! May the highest jumper win! I beat poleO360 (#61) to start things off.

Replay mandatory to prevent bug bounces.

Implementation code: http://kopasite.net/up/0/poleo.zip

not only easy to generate levs, but if there would be such feature to upload levs programatically there would also be the possibility of a website keeping track of the leader... well there is a hackish way to do this by giving the level a unique title or filename

- ElmaWars http://zzz.ink/war - lauta
- Elma Title
- Elma 3D HD (RPG GAME, GAA nominee)

Number 1 on that list is actually poleO300, so 611 is 312 on that list.

Oh, great! So the record is now http://elmaonline.net/statistics/levelpack/poleO#312/ = poleO611.lev? Looks impossible but poleO312.lev looks too easy...

Yeah unfortunately I left all the levels as "Unnamed" so it's a bit hard to keep track of which level is which :x. But next time I do this I'll know.

Yes at the moment Tm is winning with 611 (312th level)

Congratz to TM for winning polevault competition with height of 617 (308.5 pixels high)!!

Levelpack remains open for adi to try to get max points on kinglist and for Spef to one day try to beat TM. Good luck! :) :lmao:

Thanks for gz. Even tho there wasn't much interest in this contest (or at least participation from others) the idea looked great. Reaching 308.5 pixels was pretty challenging. Good luck who's gonna aim for better.

It is. PoleO617 level equals 308.5 px. PoleO300 would equal 150 px, PoleO744 - 372 px and so on.

Highest drop to survive... steepest uphill (left and right are different)... but those are not fun to play

There are always people who are willing to höyl any kind of competition. The highest fall should be only the fall and no need to first drive up for two minutes.

Levels should focus on the "problem", so they should be as simple as possible. Like the uphill levels could be made of 3 vertices. The pipe levels could be plain, horizontal pipes. These would probably be boring for normal battle levels, but they should be suitable for such competition.

I guess the pipe level should resemble this one:

http://www.recsource.tv/r/wxykuasbhg (start watching at 26s)

I think a drop of some sort should be included since entering a tight pipe like this without a spin trick is always way harder than the pipe itself.

Level 545 for example corresponds to an angle of 54.5 degrees

Re: Polevault (contest idea)

I hope to see Zweq's Olympic Hill rec soon!

I think this olympic games idea could be developed further. Would be cool to have 5-10 levels a bit like those "Olimpic Elma" in Zebra's pack (Russian ElastoMania Club levels) but only the levels where it's possible to compete like this pole and hill.

Then this competition could be organized every four years in the biggest meeting of that year. Starting in FEM 2018 :). You can train as much as you want but the official result is driven in the meeting during one hour or something. 10 levels in 1 hour and you decide what you play or 10 mins per level together I don't know. Championship and national competitions could be organized more often of course.

I think this could be more interesting periodical contest than the 6 first internals for example. We could see if the results improve over the years. Too bad we didn't start this in 2000 :).

Max speed level could be a bit like Asteroids (OLP, http://elmaonline.net/statistics/level/277506) where you have infinite ways to go down and spin more speed.

Just an idea, I don't know how to make levels etc.

More ideas:

* Uphill Left
* Pipe
* Speed ("asteroids")
* Bounce
* Drop (if it works)
* Slow (if it works)
* High jump with a ramp like in Hi Flyer could work somehow ... and then an apple to be taken or a killer to be jumped over, I don't know
* Slalom (the Olimpic Elma level has some idea)
* Canon... like boomik.lev (I don't like it myself but could be interesting for technical oriented players)
* Spikes ... no idea if it can work but the spikes would get harder and harder: longer gaps or sharper or going uphill? Like 10 spikes which need perfect alo-spinning?

http://kopasite.net/up/5qky1mk5j4vx514/olhil543z.rec here best with old style, i thought i dont need to play anymore but then zero beated me hard and i went for stylefinding
http://kopasite.net/up/lx0ah88u845g129/olhil550z.rec here best, i missed 551 by few pixels and i think smth like 553 is doable, maybe even 555

anyway it was a bad contest, should have had shorter hill and no chance to get extra speed (tiny flat area and killers on wall)
