Your biggest misbeliefs about Elma/EOL

Post by iCS »

My top3:

in the old Elma 1.0 - 1.2 era:
- slesk001.rec (MOPOCO15.lev Impsybility hard version) is a hack replay, such hardcore piping is not possible for human

when I found EOL:
- Elma Online is a browser game edition of Elma

First days in EOL:
- orka lev means ugly like an Ork lev

I`'ve always thought (and still think) that "psy", as in "impsy", means "possible". Sadly no one else uses it that way.

Classics like changing direction has no impact on the physics of the bike (e.g. when falling from start straight onto a polygon) stuck with me for more than 10 years.

Also I thought that Orcc would be ugly like an Orc but he isn't.

When i tried to join eol 1st time in 2011 it was impsy cuz there was some complex puzzle required (like 1)register 2)pm request to KD kuski here on lauta 3)profit), so i just rambled around, readed eol rules, features osv and i discovered battle types, namely "one-life".
When i finally connected to eol there was battle in ONExxx.lev by Ramone ongoing and i thought it was onelife battle and drived very slowly and safely.

Also thought nekit was an spambot virus (which is true)

1) When i was 10, I filled lev by maskbig textures to change ground color and thought it was the only method

2) I thought that 55th lev was finished by someone, bcz i had seen video of it (now i think that i saw nitro rec, bcz its totally impsy to finish it without nitro)

3) When i played levs done in ALE, I thought that all these things was done by arms. One of first such levs I saw was consist of 100 equal rectangles (by cook imo:/) and it was a shock for meXD HOW THE HUMAN COULD DO THAT???? although this lev poss to make for 5 mins

At first when I just had joined #across on irc I saw, for the most part, mila writing "damez" at regular times.
For example "damez didn't get 14.20 even in warm up" etc.
I thought it was a person so one day I asked who it was xD everybody laafd.

Thought tl was a bot to make random levels, to fill gaps. I joined eol at a time when TL just had gotten 1 year chat ban:)
Also thought all mopo recs was fake

3) for months i thought that to add gravity to levels in editor is the prerogative of Balazs and only later i have disovered RMB-on-apple
4) the biggest misbelieve is that i thought that the elma mans are crap

That Lassi was a friend of Abula.

I remember playing old moposite levels in 2003 and being very impressed by most of the times by Lassi. "Damn, Abula's friend Lassi sure can drive good times" I thought.

I told Abula about this in FEM18, he had a good laugh about it

I thought for many years that Enigma was Engima wich i thought was the spelling of Engine for some weird reason.

I also belived that long before alo-button came that doublepressing both arrows was for no use except for coming in right position in the Freefall-fall.

I checked on moposite sometime in 2007 but found there hadn't been any activity there since 2006. I was very disappointed that Elma community was dead and I was too late to join.

1. i knew wr table in around 2008 and used to check it sometimes, but was convinced wrs are sent by some anonymous weirdfucks that dont know each other and just play internals quietly. forum was nowhere to be found :D had i seen this, maybe i would have been for 11 years in here.

2.
kuchitsu wrote: 21 Jan 2019, 21:57- reading anpdad as "andpad"
hell of a poopy mayonnaise, SAME! took me a few months to realize, was surprising

3. more of an xmoto misbelief:
when i already got good in elma i thought its gonna be hell of an ez to find pro styles and drive wrs in xmoto. i had the imagination, i had the stylefind. bike is bike, huh? ill learn how to control xmoped in no time based on my elma experience!!! nope, the controls successfully threw me off. took me 1h to realise the wrs aint that ez and orka play this.

4. i used to believe you need an extremely fast reaction time/reflex to be good in elma, especially in pipes. no you dont
It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice.

I think elma, and piping is no exception, is about a combination of anticipation with planning, and reaction. A lot of the time we can anticipate bike behaviour and plan keystrokes in advance for it to do what we want, but there's also the element of quick and well-judged response to the unpredictable and random. It's an interesting topic :)

Many years I thought i can change fps in "Capture FPS". So i was playing always with fps=100, thinking there is some other values i set. I even felt that bike moves little differently with diff values.

then nekit said fps is "FPS limit" :/

Capture FPS is for when you enter a replay while holding F1. It will dump a bunch of .snp files in your Elma directory, which you can use to make a video of the replay. If Capture FPS is set to 30, it makes a 30fps video, if it's set to 60 it makes a 60fps video etc.

When i saw "!lev10" in the chat for the first time, i thought it meant something like "this battle level is similar to level 10 (the steppes)" (similar shortcut / trick)

Back then, when there was only Belma, I though EOL is just a rumor and milagros is not really working on it. I thought it will maybe come out as a joke project, like jonharkulsykkel and other mans used to make, because EOL's features just seemed too good to be true.

unrelated story about elma misbeliefs: Waaaay back in 2003 or 04, when I had like 42-44 TT, I copyed all my internal recs to a floppy disc for my IRL friend and he thought that he will easily beat all those times in a matter of hours, because now he "knows all the styles and he will just add a move or two and beats me". Long story short, he didn't beat any.

1) I thought there was no way to play elma on Windows 10, so I didn't play it for a good 10 years or more. Had no clue about EOL.

2) thought TNT was a person. Everyone kept randomly saying TNT!!! late at night I thought they were just excited to see an old friend. But then i never saw this guy anywhere, and nobody ever said anything else, like, "hows it going man its been so long". Took me a long time.

3) orka, orcc. no clue what this means.
