i didn't have time lately to do anything, but got this nice email :

Heolah, we are moving our server and I can't keep on hosting Elmaonline server. Current server costs 70e/month and the new one will be 0e/month. If you want to keep it, I need that 70e/month. I know this is tough but our deal was that it can be running as long as it doesn't cause any trouble and now it does. Regards, Abu

oh what a shame, now this means we'll never get to see eol! whereas before there was only a slim possibility of seeing it

i for one don't care, belma provides all the functionality i need. some anti-cheat patch (moderately sophisticated encryption would suffice, i find it disgraceful this wasn't implemented to begin with) and it would be perfect. but of course, noone seems to give a shite

encryption is implemented now, it wasn't done at first cause it was just a project for fun and at that time ppl cared about functionality, not some shitty antixiit, which would be useless if ppl were normal

Well... back when skint0r hosted the belma server, people donated lots of money. Why couldn't people do that again? I don't remember how much was donated, but at least the cost was covered for over a year at one point.

Pawq wrote:every server is possible to hack, and i think so far berh has proved his skills, had he "failed" us even once? :/
to "hack" the belma server atm all you need is this :

1. any tool that can capture all network messages and forward it further to the belma application (with this you ez recognize what's what cause it's uncrypted, this "application" can be done in 20 mins if you know some basics of network stuff)
2. to do nitro cheat all you need is actual nitro patch

for any of the hack he did he did not require any skills and any knowledge of the code and anyone could easily do it
simply script kiddie stuff, i havent seen any proof of skills

i doubt he can get through the eol code atm, i would have serious problems myself (= million fails and automatic bans, annoying registration with new email address if we dont do it invite only) if i didn't know how it's done
tools just don't help, you need very good knowledge of the asm and i didn't use any common technique, just some random shit, no need to read any articles
i doubt any of his pro friends will spend weeks to crack it..
old belma was never supposed to be safe, its just very quick implementation of the desired functionality cause at that time noone really cared about these issues and it was not my 8h/day job

.. and about teh release, you know, sometimes i have some other important stuff to do for a month or two, there have been much longer breaks (some 8 months was teh logest), if anyone wants to complain, just check how often there is one month break in top10, best recs or totaltime updates
i dont really give a shit about your fucking wr recs, i just wondered if anyone (except wno who gave me recs anyway) gives me any recs (credit goes to madness), looks like noone appreciate the work i do that much
if i dont find something more improtant to do, i may do last fixes this weekend

About the money issue, I'm pretty sure I can't donate anything at the moment. Even though I love this game and I really really want EOL to run smooth, I have no money. I don't even have money to buy new underpants atm. Of course the situation might change, I'm just saying this now so that mila or someone won't go off taking over the server expecting everybody to donate.

Of course, if I had some 10-40€ left over after having bought food and every vital piece of equipement, I would donate it to any future EOL server (if it's needed), without a doubt. But that's not the situation for me now.

70e/month not really realistic in the longterm I think, but it should be possible to find something that works much cheaper. The place I have kopasite hosted offers some virtual private servers where it should be possible to run it, for 15$/month.

alright. i suppose you would be blocking mailinator or such if open registration, and somehow protect against tor-onion and other such "proxies" -- some websites already do that, but it seems a bit complicated; you might be able to achieve most of those results with much efforts, though.
milagros wrote:i dont really give a shit about your fucking wr recs, i just wondered if anyone (except wno who gave me recs anyway) gives me any recs (credit goes to madness), looks like noone appreciate the work i do that much
now that's orthogonal, mila. anyone playing belma actually appreciates the results of your work.

that's quite it, some features i'd still like to see though, like custom resolution, and some less important stuff as the ability to automatically remove time and map displays upon entering game without having to press t or v (some players rarely use any of those displays anyway) -- take this one as a challenge! --, not counting times done by the uploader during battle (so he can play and try to improve his time rather than watching other peepz playing or playing and having to press esc before flower).

besides that, perhaps some kind of reinforcement contingency for uploaders of much-liked levs (because, we've got to reinforce such lev designers).
