Quote me where I misused italics.

I think it's funny that people will go out of their way to express dislike for something as subtle as italics.

You know me Lou, and you know I try to be as objective, unbiased as I can. But I have to say that italics used very often ruin the message. What I also mean is that if message is well written it shouldn't even need italics to show which words are pronounced with face being set up with some funny grimace, changing the colour of your voice. Or, just leave it to the reader to have the choice of emphasising different words while reading the message aloud in his brain. Not to mention the aesthetical issue, as it looks weird, when some words are shown in a different (bold, italic, underlined) way. For most, not neccessarily conservative readers, it appear as a certain disharmony. And the last argument is what you actually said. People are just people, and normal people tend to be lowly people usually, or just can get low too easily as their mood isn't brilliant. Why would one want to mess up with the crowd, is that really the point? Exchanging elma and non-elma-related opinions is.

To clarify, I have no problem with anyone using italics as emphasis. I think varied writing styles are a good way to bring out different characters in a tight knit community. Which brings me to a bigger issue I have with myself: when I enjoy someone's company, I copy their manners to fit in. I'm pretty certain I don't have a real personality.

just to clarify my opinion:
You, as a starter of this topic, may use them correctly, but "followers" of the idea of this topic would use them wrongly for sure in the future. Hence it's your fault ;)

Let's just talk like THIS, it's about as SUBTLE as ITALICS, but more easily READABLE, because letters are BIGGER. All books MUST be REWRITTEN in a similar fashion too, it's more DIVERSE than plain old WRITING. And OVERUSING it is GOOD, you can't go WRONG with CAPITALIZATION or ITALICIZATION.
(Wanted to write more, but i think my brain EXPLODES soon if i continue).

on the inernet ther will still be problem of understanding posts/messages due to lack of emphasis, which italics, BIG LETTERS nor bold typing can solve.
the way of expressing irony, fun, disgust etc. is possible just a bit, even more when the community is such a mix of many cultures and countries.

Even when you don't use italics, I find it hard to not put emphasis on some words like they had been put special emphasis on them by the writer, while reading this topic. Everything is messed up merely by the performativity of creating this topic itself (your emphasis).
