About World Cup
World Cup has a long history of being the most competitive contest in the Elasto Mania (and Across) scene. The first World Cup was arranged all the way back in the year 1999 and attracted a total of 206 kuskis all around the world. Since then seven more World Cups have been arranged, making the 2020 upcoming World Cup the 8th one in history.

The main format of the World Cup has remained pretty much the same although some special events have been included along the years. The number of the events has varied from 15 to 20, one event length varying from just few days to two full weeks. There is no question World Cup requires a lot of skills from the players in every aspect of the game.

Levels are made by the community, you can still submit your level for consideration but hurry up. Deadline for level submission has been extended to august 15th, see this topic for more info viewtopic.php?f=1&t=10041

It's time to get stoked and prepared for the upcoming World Cup 8! Meanwhile you can check the old World Cup data on the links below.

Yes, in fact we have a new features that allows us to force people to be hidden in cup levels (you can still choose to show yourself to team mates). Times are hidden as usual in cups.

There will be a casual test cup starting this sunday (16th) to check that cup feature is working as it should etc: one week cup, 5-6 events, 1 or 2 break days, 1 skip.

Accidentally quoted instead of edited so I guess I'll write something. Remember world cup starts in just 8 days. Donation pool is almost at $900. If there's any features on https://elma.online/cup/wct you are missing please speak up now, don't expect the cup page on elmaonline.net to be available.

Would be nice to see team and country like usual!
And some way to see exact time left (not just "in 1 day") because time zones are confusing.
"Current Event" seems like a good place for a map preview.
Btw the tables are very poorly aligned for me, the numbers aren't under the "Points" label at all.

Unfortunately, the overall presentation feels very unprofessional compared to ville_j's sites or the elmaonline.net interface.( Like some test page with no design. Though it probably won't matter when the cup begins and everyone gets super stoked.) Sorry for complaining.

World Cup starts today! All events has been added on the site >> https://wcup.site

Few things to keep in mind if you're playing:
  • Remember to upload your replay on the site, you can upload as many times as you want, so a good way to not forget is to upload whenever you make a new PR.
  • If you are in a team you can see each other in-game and download replays from the team tab on the site. Make sure you lock your team if you don't want anyone to be able to join it and find your replays >> https://elma.online/settings
  • Start and end times on the site is in your timezone, no need to try converting.

Mostly terrible levels. Yet again wcup team shows no class or skill to pick challenging yet fun and interesting levels for players' enjoyment. Over-engineered levels rely much on pixel apples, pixel polygons and pixel tricks and are getting tedious to play. Throw in a couple of annoying flower placements and the bitter soup is ready. Maybe some year we will get a competition which is designed for players' enjoyment rather than just farming replays for the organizers?

I agree, specter2. WCup808 was the worst level ever. Was not fun to play in any way. Not to say my levels would have been any better. :D I have liked some levels but most of the good levels have also been ruined by some random bounces here and there.
Also I wonder why there hasn't been any kind of conversation about the cup or the replays or the levels here at mopolauta? This whole WC8 seems dead.

It's tough to judge the team since we don't know what levels they have to pick from. I'd suggest either sending levels your self if you haven't, or come with some more concrete examples of the type of levels you are missing.

Yes Kopaka, you are right, maybe I should come to discord... But discord/IRC/other chatting platforms are so addictive that I try to avoid them. I think I was chatting in IRC for 10 years (2002-2012 or something), but it took so much time that I wanted to quit it and I managed to do it... :)

It's true we don't know that, but it's possible to edit the levels to require less pixel tricks. It's not that the levels are completely garbage or that there are missing some certain types of levels.

IMO quite liked 808 because less reliance on pixeltricks. Only one annoying spot, and thankfully that was at beginning. 807 also very good. Other levs had problems for me because had 1-5 1/100 tricks which were just compounding difficulty/luck and each trick cost like an extra second from wintime etc. etc.

Fun to play with team, ofc, but just maybe some pixel adjustments necessary to keep enjoyment at max: would prefer 1/2 viable runs within first 10 sec rather than 1/50 viable runs :)

3 main steps for enjoying wcup:

1) Don't be pro
2) Don't join top team
3) Don't find impsy styles because you are nab
4) Enjoy cruising

The problem is the better we all get at elma, the more we push the boundaries for which styles are possible, and the harder the levels become.

Stay bad and stay glad
Become pro, expect woe ~

In fact, while playing 808 I was really happy that the first apple reach was impossible (<- nab) so that no need for pixel apple. If I had known it was possible I wouldn't have enjoyed)

the fastest route is always pixel and hard.
shortcuts need tricks, whats strange?

almost impsy to make a multiroute lev without some hard shortcut, but would it be more interesting to play only 5sec flat hoyl levs in wc, calculating wheelpops?

btw yea some levs are terribl

In my opinion the fastest style can be pixel perfect and hard, but in that case it has to be well hidden and nearly impossible to find. But like the current event 809 is whole another thing when the fastest route is easy to find but it is a streak of fucking hard tricks. It's very demotivational to know that you will be losing a lot if you decide to go for easier styles, and even more so if you try to go for a good time but end up just dying dying dying.

We cannot know what the level pool to pick from was like, but I would say that the level pickers have the responsibility to make sure that the levels in the cup are fun to play. I know they kept asking for people to send in more levels, but I think that's not enough because we didn't know what kind of levels were missing. Now it seems that they would've needed more multistyle levels. We only have a World Cup every couple of years so postponing it a bit further to ask for more levels is very possible option.

And we also need a roller coaster :) World cup is not world cup without a roller coaster, pipe and apple harvest. So now when we have only 3 events left, we know what's ahead of us :D Also one lol level is needed but luckily we got it already (806) :)

Yet again one of the worst levels in wcup history. With minutes and minutes of driving through empty pipes and spots this level serves no other purpose than waste everyone's time. I hope anyone involved with the level selection process will understand to withdraw themselves from the future cup arrangement teams or check their motives for choosing levels. The fact that none of them has bothered to reply in this thread also shows how little they have interest towards the whole thing. This community is already a really small one and you are digging your own grave deeper by turning competitions into something that people don't want to play.

Your post shows how little you understand of the whole thing, and how eager you are to judge others without much consideration for anything other than your preferences.

It sucks enough for the lev selectors to see complaints everywhere to actively take part in discussions where people have this kind of attitude.

Of course these are just my opinions that i write here and it's not totally impossible that there are some people who like to hoyl for hours to get that pixel apple and whatnot, but i'm not the only one who has mentioned about these things. Besides, if the crew really has to read negative comments everywhere then perhaps them (and you?) should accept that maybe there really has been something wrong with the levels, and they could re-evaluate the criteria and method how they choose the levels. If they can't take criticism then maybe that's also an indication that they shouldn't be in the level selecting team in the first place. And if the crew chooses not to participate in this conversation and give the "wrong" impression of not caring then that's their own fault.

I can kinda see the rationale behind calling Wcup808 "bad" (it feels like a lev from early 2000s, but imo that is actually quite cool in its own way), but current pie lev seems fun to cruise and hoyl. It is long, sure, but if you don't want that, just go play eol battles. World cup is also about endurance, after all.

Is it hard for people to read and understand the points of my messages? It seems like the replies are always talking about things I didn't even mention.

There's nothing wrong having a long or endurance requiring level but this level is terribly unbalanced with minutes of pipes with no apples, no consistently placed apples at all meaning some hard pipe only has one apple where as an easy one is stuffed with apples... it's a really weird decision to have a pipe where someone could drive farther and not receive any more points because there just aren't any apples. That's really bad design.

Inconsistent apple density has literally no effect on the standings, because it doesn't matter where you die, if you got at least 1 apple further than someone else, you'll be ahead. And the majority level has a very consistent distribution of apples, it usually doesn't take longer than 3-5 seconds to reach the next apple, with the exception of 3-4 places where 2 routes are possible - obviously can't have apples there.

If you placed the apples evenly on the level it would make the results more diverse and make every inch count. There's no reason for part III to have that many apples and rest of the level very few. Also that IV split route is not a good idea since the other route is very long without any apples, in other split routes it doesn't matter that much. STYX pipe should also have more apples since it's very crumbly. All these design flaws would be easily fixable without taking anything away from the level, and it would make it more fun and rewarding to play

I don't think it makes much sense discussing the design of the level without reading Sierra's explanation of it:
Sierra wrote:‘Nine Circles of Pipe Hell’ is an epic adventure level, inspired by the famous 14th-century poem ‘Inferno’ by Dante Alighieri, in which the author descends through the nine layers or ‘circles’ of hell. Like Dante’s afterlife, this level comprises nine distinct stages or ‘circles’, each one taking its name from the Inferno: in order, they are Limbo, Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Wrath, Heresy, Violence, Fraud, and Treachery (the last being where Satan resides). My aim has been for each one to showcase a particular style of pipe (e.g., curvy, zig-zaggy, wide/tight, multi-route), such that the level as a whole becomes a tribute to the rich variety and diversity of the pipe world. I have also sought to make each circle reflect its name in some way – thus ‘Gluttony’ features an excessive number of apples; ‘Greed’ plays on the kuski’s own personal greed; ‘Lust’ is a wonderland of giant breasts and erect penises; and so on. Naturally, Satan makes an appearance at the very end, and if the kuski is skilled enough to evade the Prince of Darkness, he reaches the flower that takes him safely to purgatory.
As you might imagine, rather a lot of research went into the making of the level; not only in terms of the literary allusions, but the pipe styles themselves. The twentieth anniversary of Elma’s creation is a historic event, and I felt the level had to reflect a sense of this history if it were to do justice to the occasion. I embarked, therefore, on a journey of my own, deep into the pipe archives, immersing myself in the classics of old – such imperishable greats as MOPOCO15, MOPOCO19, and WCup414 – as well as countless level packs ranging from John’s JoPis to Mawane’s mawpis to later collections like Zero’s ZiPis, barryp’s ‘pips’ series, and, of course, the ‘chainpi’ masterpieces. Keen pipe enthusiasts will, I think, be able to detect the influences of all of the above, and many more, at various stages of the level (just as players old enough to remember it will recognize the nod to my own humble contribution to WCup5).
It might be argued that the level is not of the ‘conventional’ cup style. This may be true, but then this World Cup is no conventional one either. So historic an occasion requires, in my view, not only an extra degree of grandeur, but also that the level captures the present moment as fully as possible, offering a portrait for posterity of the evolution and advances in the pipe scene over these two decades. In my personal view as a pipe enthusiast, the greatest single leap forward in recent years has been precisely the innovation of the ‘chainpi’ style, which I have tried to the best of my abilities to emulate here.
Was it cast for the mass who burn and toil?
Or for the vultures who thirst for blood and oil?

This pipe level is a masterpiece. It's unique and enchanting. I only wish that saveload was allowed... :D

Thanks for the post SveinR, that's why these discussions exist. Can't expect anyone to pull that information out of thin air. It definitely explains why the level is the way it is. However it doesn't change the playability or the experience, and the design could've been improved to make it more balanced and cup friendly.

The level quality in general hasn't been an issue, more so it's about what is suitable for a cup. I can see this WCup810 being a great lev in the pipe category but as it is I don't think it's a good fit for a world cup. In general it's the worst excuse for anything to say "this is how it's always been done" as in having to include a pipe lev in world cup at all. If everyone thought that way humans would still be höyling Elma in caves.

You can make pretty much any type of lev and it can be good if it's used correctly. Ramone can make 7 second one style höylä and start it as 60 minute battle whereas TL makes two minute multistyle lev size of a horse and battles it for 12 minutes. Both would make the level seem bad even though the problem lies in the battle time.

It's about finding the correct usage for each lev:
  • Bullet cup with 1-2 minute battles: Great use for a 2-second lev
  • Lev pack aimed for long term höyling: Can include big and hard shortcuts
  • World Cup: General levels with various types. Short, long, one route, multistyle, easy, hard. In best case plenty of stylefinding
  • What it's like to pick up the hottest girl at a bar: Lev with random 1/100 trick
  • What it feels like to starve to death: WCup810

I don't think you are allowed to complain if you:
A) Have not sent in a level of your own that you consider superior to those selected.
B) Are not willing to join the orga/lev selecting team to actively contribute to a better selection.

Cheers

That's the most absurd thing ever. People criticize and rate movies, music, paintings.. basically any art/creations every day and it's totally normal. Just because you can't create a masterpiece yourself doesn't mean you can't tell if something's shit.

They didn't make the levels, they picked the levels. Stop whining already and make some actual effort to do your best in the level, then maybe you'll find is not nearly as bad as you thought.

This is one problem in this community. Whenever you criticize something people get very defensive and tell you to shut up instead of being able to discuss things properly. I have criticized both levels and level selectors so i don't know what you are talking about pawq. If you see my comments as "whining" instead of criticism maybe you should read through my posts again objectively.

still this is WCup, not some external cup for one's pleasure, so you are still suppossed to use your skill to beat others whatever they give you. As long as it's not a 0.01 wheel-in-flower level and you are able to achieve different results from the others and it's not entirely luck-based, then the event is valid
<Pawq> at a gym you have only 3 options: 1. have your eyes closed, 2. stare at yourself, 3. stare at others, all of which are either super boring or disgusting

I was mainly referring to the fact that people are doing all this work in their free time, but I guess your point is valid. It just hurts a bit imo.
