Level Review Topic

Post by dz »

Got a new level and want other mopolauta members to rate and comment about it? Post a working link here and listen our judgement.
If possible, post only one level at time to avoid mass flood, so pick only levels which you really want to be rated.

'STOP The Applegeddon' - by Flat Tracker
It is obvious you have put a lot of work into this. A lot of the pictures look good, I loved the big bird thing.
This would be a great cruising lev if you hadn't added most of the things that turn a good cruising lev into a rubbishy n00b lev. For instance the bit where you fall down onto the bumpy, spikey ground with all those randomly placed vertexes. This type of ground is bad enough on its own without being concealed by pictures.
The length is good and there are a lot of fun obstacles. It is kept interesting throughout with pictures, although i personally dislike the carmageddon lgr.
The adjective "nice" suits this level fine. It could've been made better with less pictures, less annoying spikey vertexes and maybe a bit more grass.
I like your levels Flat Tracker, but this is definately not one of your best.

Hm. Should I rate it out of 10 or something? Whatever...

thanks for rating Chris, and I agree with your opinion. :?
BTW that 0 to 10 point system is a system that suits well here in this topic.
Nice idea, now to others: make levels too!

I don't think we should set any rules for who that should do the review, as long as it's not always the same person doing them. Doing two reviews in a row is no problem, doing five reviews in a row is a problem. If you feel that you've been doing too much, just wait for someone else to do the review.

A couple of guidelines for the review:
  1. When you are starting to write a review, make a placeholder post saying "Reviewing level X by X", edit your final review into this post. This is to prevent two people from accidentally reviewing the same level. Another alternative is to allow more than one person to review the same level, to get more than one single impression.
  2. Try to review in a similar fashion to that of LOM, with points for e.g visualization and playability (possibly other categories). You don't have to make seperate scores for each category (e.g Vis.: 8/10, Play.: 4/10), just take it into account and comment on it.
  3. Give a final score, from 1 to 10, along with an overall impression of the level and possibly what that was good/could be improved.
Feel free to suggest more rules/guidelines, or comment on/correct the current guidelines.

I feel like I shouldn't be doing this, not exactly posting a lot and all... anyway:
One Old Cave by FrenZy
I'm afraid I have to mention the supporters: they clash with the foreground. Actually, Stone2 doesn't mix well with anything except grey and green. Metal supporters aren't exactly topical for an old cave either. The whole level is grassed, with some good use of pictures (eg, the extra grass), and there's an enclosed area.
The design is good overall - there are a few dead ends where you have to retrace your route, and a few leaps and jumps of faith, such as in the big enclosed bit over the killers. It is long enough to be enjoyable, and is good work for forty minutes clicking. Not amazingly cruisable, but it does the job.
To improve: Um... You could open the level out a bit more, or add some more pictures and textures. Also it looks slightly polygonated (the walls look angular). It is still a nice effort.

6/10

Level: Freeeeeek Lab ( http://www.gratisweb.com/pabloossa/s.lev )
Creator: Undiente

The overall look could be alot better. The shapements of the polygon edges and actually everywhere in general could be better. Now, as it is, it looks too much of a newbie level (if there is such definition anyway, but you know, everyone who has made levels have made such) ;)

There are a few spots where the grass is placed weirdly. I don't know if it's meant to be that way (freeeeeeky?), but I find it rather ugly.
There are also pretty much "details" which are created by masking different colours. I personally don't like it. In Across details were okay since there wasn't any pictures and so to make levels look more nicer, but I pretty much never find detailed drawings beautiful in Elma.

There is a "bug line" showing shortly after start. I don't really know how one gets those, I remember I've gotten those sometime but not anymore for a long time anymore. Anyway, it's god damn annoying and UGLY. :)

The level is OK to play, but I really hate the rightmost loop. It's just too narrow spaced and it makes all the fun out of hoyling. Without that, it'd be a great battle level, for example.

Overally, the level is okay to play, but the outlook disturbs me quite alot.

Pack info: features 8 levels (dev01.lev-dev08.lev) ( http://www.geocities.com/devan_gaffney/devpack.zip )
Creator: drg?

I find this pack quite decent after all.
Some of the levels look pretty nice, though for example levels 3 & 8 could need some graphics, or at least grass. Other than that, those specific levels are okay, so why not make them a bit better by improving the outlook?

One thing I noticed is that there is again this, could I say, phenomena, where there is some unimportant part, which could be for example shielded by grass, but the ground is flat. I mean, it's just flat without any kind of shapes, and what's even worse, the angle is 180 degrees. (the bike is in normal position standing still.) I hope you know what I mean. :)

All in all, it's not a bad pack. It's decent. Though it could be alot better too.

Juble -----> The Trooper

Playability : 8/10
I just discovered the ¨normal¨style to finish the level, not that difficult but the flow of the level is a little slow a some points of the level. But mainly, the flow is tight, the ¨stair¨end is cool but a little difficult.

Visuality : 9/10
As usual, Juble makes a crazy great level, grass is thick enough, nice masks and smooth colors.

Overall : 8.7/10
I had so much fun playing the level, very good

Westy --> Tricky Topography

Playability :
5.5/10
The level is not very playable because of some non fluid obstacles which really get the level flow down. For people who like tricky and slow level, it's one of the good i've played. The end of some polygons could be a little more close to their "next to" polygons.

Visuality : 7.2/10
The level is overally good looking. The grass is a little bad on the edge of most polygons. And also, look out for the green on polygons located over grassed polygons. Pictures are well placed except for the first one, i understand it's there to blind the player, but it's not well placed. Anyway, overally a good textured and pictured level.

Overall : 6.8/10
Nice little level to play. Very simple one with still hard tricks. Hope you'll improve and make a cool level pack.

P.S. : By the way, i played some of your levels in your level pack and just don't make too much levels with invisible polygons and don't put too much gravity in levels.

This is the first real level I've ever made. I have another newer one, which I'll post after this is reviewed. IMO, it's not all that bad for a first. It's not too hard at all, although there is one hard part that doesn't even seem like it should be hard. I forgot what my best times here are. I think it's something like 58 seconds. Tell me how fast you guys can do it.

Oh, and I was learning how to make grass while I made this, so the grass is kind of buggy here and there. My newer level has better grass. ;P

Oh, and please don't be biased because I'm new. Give me an honest opinion. My feelings won't get hurt if you say this sucks.

BTW: Since Geocities sucks and I didn't feel like using my other server, you'll have to copy and paste the URL into your browser, rather than just clicking on the hyperlink.

The Stairway --> Labratkid

Playability 6.6/10
: The level is pretty fun to play. First, the beginning is well thought, you can make it with different techniques. The direction change at the right end of the level is well done, even with great speed, you don't die with a clean landing. The place where the level drops is the last part. After getting the last apple, you go down, get a lotta speed and then you see the word "slow", surely the most annoying thing to see in a level ( i know, i did it too in my old levels but, i don't do it anymore ! ). For the very end, it's well done. Overall for playability, pretty good except the last part.

Visuality 8.5/10 : The level is well pictured in general. At the beginning, some bushes are well placed. All the trees are in the ground and placed nicely. Some place are filled with trees but, there aren't too much trees which is good. As you told before, the grass ain't perfect but, it's very except for the last part, grass gets a little too thick at certain points. I like the way you write your name at the beginning and the kinda patern you did at the left of the start. Level is good visually.

Overall 7.9/10 : I like the level. Even if the level isn't perfectly made and i don't like too much, i still have fun playing it so, grreat job :D

Railness --> HalcyoN

Playability 9.2 / 10 :
The level is very fun to play, nice riding and cool. The shortcut is a little too obvious for me but, there's still a little challenge to make it. The level fits very smoothly, we see that it ain't a noob level. Great too see some talented new designers of elasto levels. I would have love to see some more tricks cause, the level is more about riding, than beating times.

Visuality 8.1 / 10 :
Visualy, the level is pretty good. The grass is a little unequal at certain places but, nice. There are some images, but not too much which is good. Overally, the level looks nice.

Overall 8.8 / 10 :
Finally, i liked this level, i played it a lot and i still enjoy riding it... Cool level :D

Centauri --> HalcyoN

Playability 8 / 10 :
Very good level. I liked the start cause there are two ways of doing it, one way more difficult, more fast , the other slower and easier. After, the ending is also finishable in multiple ways, good level with great diversity of styles. You can really play it often without getting bored. Also, there's a trick that's very smooth for taking the 3rd apple. Very fun level to play.

Visuality 6 / 10 :
This time, it seems that the designer really put less effort in the visual aspect of the level. First, the grass. At some points of the level, there's no grass at all and just beside, there's like 2-3 centimeters thick of grass. Second, the pictures have been placed with less care. Some images are way too much in the soil and some are floating in the air, which is annoying to see when you play a cool level like that. You tell yourself that the designer should have put more effort in the visual aspect.

Overall 7.9 / 10 :
The level is very fun to play but the look just drops a little the fun... if you don't care too much about the visual aspect, you should love this level.

Thanks for the GREAT reviews The_BoneLESS. Very nice written.

Im glad you like my levels :) Maybe I should make a levelpack?
About the last one, yeah it was 4m in the morning and I just wanted it done, but I'll look into it and I will make it look better :)

If it's not a problem, maybe you could help me with my future levels? Im not that skilled in driving (a TT of 1h20 mins show that eh? :) ) so I could need a beta tester? Are you interested? If not I guess I will have to trust my intuition :)

Do the almighty Right click "save destination as.." :P

And if it's caus of real player or something opening it, either just let it do, and it will save it automatically to some directory, (see real player properties) or open random directory, select "functions" (or whatever in english) and "Mappeindstillinger" it's the one lowest in the menu. Then select the fane "filetypes" and find the .rec file type. And remove it or select no program for it or whatever.

Juble -------> Basic Commando course

Playability : 8.8 / 10

Very playable. Lots of very simple tricks all along the level which made me appreciate the level. The level is finishable even for n00bs but, to make a good time, you got to have some serious skillz. I like the ¼ part because, a lots of styles to get through this part. Juble always makes level very playable and enjoyable.

Visuality : 9.6 / 10
Very nice level visualy. Always appreciate a nice simple designed level. The grass is just thick enough, but not too much. The pictures are placed smoothly and not in too big quantities. But, still, i would have liked some innovative theme.

Overall : 9.5 / 10
A beautiful level by Juble, as usual. Download and enjoy !

SleepWalker by AtmaWeapon

Playability : 8.9 / 10

I have to say it, i've been surprised by the playability of this level. First, i saw that the designer was AtmaWeapon,... who is this guy ? But, after downloading the level, damn, nice little level. Played it for about 15 minutes without getting tired of it. The start is simple. The pipe is very accessible for pretty much everyone but, not that easy. The rest of the level is basic and simple. I liked the simplicity of the level.

Visually : 8.1 / 10

The level is pretty much well textured. Nothing out of the ordinary but, the pics are in good amounts, well displaced. The bridge could be more detailed of made with a little more effort but besides that, nice.

Overall : 7.7 / 10

I've been impressed by the quality of the level, but still, it's not an extraordinary level, AOL Keyword : Simplicity !

My best time : 33.76

Anorexia by AtmaWeapon

Playability : 6.5 / 10

Two words : Killers and Gravity
Most of the players will hate the level because of those two words. Personnally, i thought it was a nice level. Dodging the killers is a bit of a trouble and ... dodging the... ( i won't spoil :wink: ) is pretty easy. The concept of the level is bright but the level is a bit short. I had some fun playing this level but it's not the best. Little tip, don't put much gravity nor killers in your levels, most of the players hate those two.

Visually : 7.5 / 10

The grass is definitly well done. You have a nice handwritting, that a +, i hate people who have bad handwritting. I don't like the "roof" of your level, you shouldn't put killers, maybe some trap, secret area but no killers please. Besides that, nice use of pictures...

Overall : 6.1 / 10

I had a little less fun on this one than on the first. I know these are your first levels and I'm sure you'll evolve and make excellent levels quite soon !

My best time : 20;23

Uncle Mutant by 8-Ball

Playability : 9.1 / 10

Surely one of the best level i've played recently. The level is full of styles and techniques. At the beginning, i thought the level was pretty bad until i found some nice styles then, everything became good. There's a gravity apple but, for once, it didn't bothered me a lot because it was well placed. The only things that bothered me were some too low roofs but, with right styles, you don't die. Bravo !

Visually : 8.6 / 10

The level is good. I particularly like the "Uncle Mutant", nice. The grass is nicely done all over the level. Pictures are well placed and not in too big quantite. The design of the level is quite good and the completly unuseful killers give a little something to the level.

Overall : 9.3 / 10

Very very very very nice
