I guess I should be announcing in here that tomorrow (13th of January) is the official Tube Battle Day, as per the EOL Holidays

Please start some pipe battles tomorrow and have fun :teeth:

I already have 4 pipes and will start them in the evening, but I will make more pipes today and tomorrow. :wink:

The whole Holiday calendar which I couldn't post as image in Polls topic is:

Tomorrow in the evening there will be a 60 minute First Finish balle.
I am not specifying time since I can't promise to be exact with balle start. Expect it to go off somewhere around 18:00 - 20:00 mopolauta time (UTC+2).

First half of the level is fairly easy cruise, the second half gets a bit harder because headbangs are more probable. With really safe ride it shouldn't be much of a problem to finish in around 30 mins.

I'm not sure if you thought of this, but when you start a (shown) 1htt you enforce everyone to be shown in all ints, and when you make these special versions you enforce that as well. So for someone hoyling some internal for PR/WR you basically ruin an hour in primetime, possible whole night cause they won't bother then. Of course it's fine to have these once in a while, but 3 in a week in primetime is just way too much. Feel free to start some discussion to figure out how much interest there is in these and we can figure out a good limit. But more than one 1htt in primetime a week is probably gonna start annoying people a lot.

Oke, CHANGE:

Next 2 battles of 1 hour tt speedrun:

Wednesday, 28 February: no volts
Wednesday, 14 March: always throttle

agree, it is too nervous to start all in 1 week.

very nice crippled 1htts!!!
but i'd suggest changing no-throttle to ANY other crippled. theres so few no-gas internals finishable which at the same time arent horror struggle that the 1htt is kinda pointless here. one turn/drunk/nobrake/fullgas/whatever else would be way more reasonable and fun.

IMO

I will start a battle tomorrow evening around 21:00-22:00 my local time (which is EET+1) so it should be around 20:00-21:00 EET and 19:00-20:00 CET. I will start another 24 minutes battle before the one below so don't mistake them. The one below has more time.

It will be a normal battle with:
- name: Heads Will Roll
- 40 minutes time to win
- no killers
- 4 apples
- 1 flower
- 2 spy areas
- no spying allowed

Teaser start:

Turns out it was today after all, just started late. Didn't like the lev much during balle, only because of 2nd apple, makes it forced high jump or random pixel apple if doing lower jump, don't like this kind of forced style. Not sure what other purpose it has. All other apples have no purpose. So I'd enjoy the lev much more with no apples. Anyway played the level a decent amount after balle and started liking it more.

I don't have many 'rules' about levelmaking, the only one I can really think of is that each apple should have a purpose. I do break this rule once in a while if I think an apple will look aesthetically nice in a certain spot. Also I have a habit of putting too many unnecessary apples in apple battles.

But this is just me, and you don't have to follow other people's rules. As I said I did end up liking the lev, after all. :P

Next Saturday, July 28th is my birthday and I am planning to start various 28 minutes battles, including:
- at least 1 FF
- at least 1 pipe
- at least 1 cruze lev
- at least 1 triks lev

I will also try to make a Flag Tag, haven't seen one in months. Maybe there were, but I haven't seen. Battle time might be my actual age :roll:
Maybe I'll make more shorter levs (07 minutes) for drunk battle, one wheel etc. It should be a various battle type kind of day. :mrgreen:

I can't say hours for battle starting because people might come to visit ofc, and bring money gifts and not clothes or sweets, hopefully :roll:

Anyway, I will start battle mostly in the evening, I assume starting from 20:00 EET, but it might be earlier or later, it all depends on visitors and my girlfriend.

Sorry for not being able to be more specific.
I will F9 and then if you EOL or iRC you will know when I start. Or if you BattleNotifier you will see when I start.

And no, I'm not turning 28 unfortunately. 28 is just the day, that never changes. :D

7 days from now (Monday 30th July) at 19:30EET I will start a 60 mins apple battle. It's my first ever apple battle and I'm taking this moment to debut a new style of levelmaking for myself, fresh with a new battle-level pack.

The level features lots of technical stuff and a good mix of easyish apples all the way up to borderline impossible. I've designed it so that it rewards the really strong players, but us simple humans can collect plenty of apples too.

The level has 200 apples and the battle will be 60 mins long. I'd love it if you guys could come and play!

Re: Preannouncing battles

Post by danitah »

Was too tired to play Grace apple battle, but tested a bit after. I guess my main comments were already said by others but anyway:

- Preferably, all furthest areas should be about same length from start. When I design I generally try to expand into wherever is still open area and closest to start. If having start away from centre, I think best start spot is generally around top middle. It depends on lev though and there are always exceptions, could be some climb lev etc where start should be on bottom, or some special concept lev. In general it's nice to have a feeling of freedom in start where you can choose between many places to go.

- Hardest spots should be close to start, especially if you die when failing them. For example a climb spot where you usually don't die when you fail it could still be fine to put far into lev, as you don't have to spend huge chunk of balletime just driving to spot to retry.

- All main areas should be easily accessible, I guess the pipe in bottom part was unintentionally too hard, which happens.

- It's just my personal preference maybe, but I enjoy shorter apple battles more. If best players are getting 2/3 of apples in 60min, I think it's just too big. Anyway it was fittingly epic lev for your first apple battle, and once in a while these epic battles are nice to have. 8)

It's kinda hard to plan of course, but I think it's close to optimal if there's only like 5% of apples that are really hard. So let's say the best players will get like 90-95% of apples in 2/3 of battle time, and the rest of apples are hard enough that they will barely get (or barely not get) all during battle time. Good players will get 90-95% in full battle time. Decent players can get 75% or something maybe. It's quite hard to say what is best, and of course there are many different types of levs, so there's no hard rules.

There are many good ideas in lev that could work very well in a more compressed lev, so I think you could make some great apple battles! Looking forward to play some.

Re: Preannouncing battles

Thanks for the feedback. It's pretty much what others have said as well, and I've already had some more ideas for a couple of apple battles I'd like to try out.

Stuff that hadn't already been commented:

Re: size of lev; I'm not so concerned. That lev was mainly testing the waters as to what does and doesn't work and to get exactly this iterative process of design working, so it didn't really matter if lev was a bit ambitious, as at least each area got attempted (aside from bottom due to dumb entry pipe being too hard). I think in the case of level size, variety is probably key. I'll be making a couple of smaller apple battles + at least 1 more big one in the next couple of weeks to get a bit more understanding of what feels fun and rewarding to play.

The % values you listed are interesting, and for sure I'll look into achieving those in at least one level as a test.

Thank you :)

Hmm yeah I agree size of lev is not an issue, I guess I meant more length of level, but if players got a chance to try all spots it's ok. Could have worded that better. My % values are just estimates from the levs I've played that felt most rewarding, and my own levs that felt like biggest successes for all players. Most enjoyable levs to spy has been some quickly made hard levs that turned out to be really close battle between 3-4 pro players, but dunno if they have been most enjoyable ones to play.

Sometime between Christmas and New Year I will be starting a big apple battle. Estimating there will be about 100 apples, maybe more.
I noticed people want more and more apple battles lately so I modified a 60 min FF project into an Apple.

Can't show a map for now as I only have a few polys added.

I will announce this again when it's exact date is set, probably a couple of days before. :beer:

Finnish Alphabet CUP: Long FF and Secret Area levels!

This Sunday the 23rd of December 20pm FIN time EET (19pm POL time) there's going to be a Long FF balle published. Balle time approx 35 minutes probably.

Before the long FF there's going to be 6 shorter first finish levels/challenges (aka Secret Area Challenges), that are a small part of the long level with slight modifications.

Hopefully many kuskis can participate! :)

Tournament structure:
7 events (6 short FFs and one long one) with a total time somewhere around 1h 30 mins. Top 10 will receive points and additionally everybody will receive points for completing a level. All points will be calculated manually by me

Points for top 1-10: 15, 12, 9, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.
Successfully completing a level will earn you always extra 3 points. So even if you finish 11th, but you reach the flower you will get 3 extra points. Also if you finish first and also complete the level you will get 17 points

Exception. Last event will be played with double points so winner gets 30 points, second 24 etc etc. Also completing the last level will give you 6 extra points instead of 3p.

In situations when three players don't complete the level but get the equal amount of apples the earned points will be the same. So tactical escing won't get you anywhere. Example:

1. adi - 10:14:15 --> 15 + 3 points
2. Markku - 11:14:14 --> 12 + 3 points
3. jblaze - 12:15:14 --> 9 + 3 points
4. pseudo - 24 apples --> 7 points
5. Hosp - 23 apples --> 6 points
6. roope - 12 apples --> 5 points
7. Zero - 12 apples --> 5 points
8. jtandsierra 11 apples --> 3 points
9. Arzenik - 7 apples --> 2 points
10. Cloud_strike - 6 apples --> 1 points
11. Henkka - 5 apples --> 0 points

Picture of the level below, but it might still change a bit:

If you zoom in closely you can see that the other one is a W, which I originally forgot to be honest...
