pawq's Couples Contest at FEM 2017

Post by pawq »

This year's FEM saw the birth of a completely new competition - the Couples Contest. The idea behind it was to encourage new types of cooperation within the community, and was born from some casual talk about blindfolded battles a few months ago. I decided to make use of FEM as the only place and time where so many kuskis are gathered together, and devised a few new battle modes.

While the contest still demanded regular elma skill, it required much deeper cooperation than style finding, which team mates are used to. The contest was comprised of four rounds:

Round 1: normal online multi battles. Two 20-minute battles requiring some style finding and some hoyling. Rules as in any EOL multi battle.

Round 2: relay battles. Two 20-minute battles where every time an apple is taken, the couple has to swap places at the keyboard. The rule is that only one keyboard and only one set of keys can be used, so the couple has to physically swap places in front of the computer, physically pass the keyboard, or physically switch fingers on the keyboard. Both levels contained an odd number of apples and were designed so that both players would get similar playing time.

Round 3: co-op battles. Two 20-minute battles where each player is only allowed to use 3 keys, and both play at the same time. That is, in the first battle player A controls gas, brake and turn, while player B controls left, right and alo volts, and in the second battle player A controls the volts, while player B controls gas, brake and turn. The rule is that any keys on the keyboard can be used, but only one keyboard may be used.

Round 4: blindfolded battles. Two 20-minute battles where one player has his eyes covered (with a blindfold, a tied hood, a sleeping bag, etc.) and controls the bike, while the other gives guidance but cannot touch the keyboard. The rule is that the blindfolded person cannot see the level before or during the battle - it is up to the pilot to guide the driver around the level. The pilot can give directions in terms of keypresses, describe the level, or describe the bike's motion, i.e. all words allowed, but can at no time touch the keyboard or the driver's hands.

I was extremely pleased to see that almost everybody who was at FEM at the time participated (26 people in total!), and watching others I felt like everybody enjoyed it as much as I have, with plenty of hysterical laughs and ecstatic shouts to be heard =)

Out of the 8 levels, Pab and Bludek made 1 each, while Ruben kindly made 2 as well as provided feedback on my own levels. Here they are:

Zero's and finman's cooperation was incredible to the point of being suspicious, congratulations once again! Also grats to 8-ball and insguy for dominating the blindfolded round, some great strategies at play there!

I will try to collect the winning replays as soon as possible, some of them are insanely good!!! I will also ask Zero and finman to take pictures of their trophies to post here. I will also post the pictures and recordings that I made during the contest.

Finally: huge thanks to everyone who thanked me for the contest or complimented it afterwards. Your words of appreciation mean the world to me and truly make it worthwhile. They are what will perhaps incline me to come to FEM next year and organise Couples Contest 2 ;)

Was sick contest, I'll gladly help making a new one for FEM18. Congratulations Finman and Zero for unreal style in Pab's lev, and to Insguy and 8-ball for literally developing telepathy during the blindfolded battles.
