Virri (FEM2018 24h level pack)

Post by zebra »

Hello all! It's still a month until FEM2018 starts, but it's already time to GET STOKED! :D

That's because I'm going to release my newest level pack in FEM2018. The level pack is a tribute to Virri Farm (Virrin tila) where the last Finnish Elma Meetings have been organized. If this is the last time at Virri Farm, it's about time to make a level pack for Virri, isn't it :)

The level pack will be released in an 24-hour event:
- You will have 24 hours to play the level pack.
- You can collect points from the following things:
* best total time: 20 points
* 2nd best total time: 15 points
* 3rd best total time: 12 points
* 4th best total time: 10 points
* 5th best total time: 8 points
* 6th best total time: 7 points
* 7th best total time: 6 points
* 8th best total time: 5 points
* 9th best total time: 4 points
* 10th best total time: 3 points
* 11th best total time: 2 points
* 12th best total time: 1 point
* best time in a level: 3 points
* reached a secret area: 1 point
- Top 3 players (the players with most points) will be awarded!
* An Official Virri Medal will be handed for the top 3.
* I will pay the winner's FEM2018 attendance price! I will pay the price directly to nick-o-matic. I will also pay 50% of the 2nd player's attendance price and 25% of the 3rd player's attendance price.
* A date will be arranged for the winner and the cabin lady ;D ;D
- If there is a draw, players' times in 1st level will decide the order.
- I'm planning to leave from FEM on Wednesday, so it would be nice to have this competition from Sunday to Monday or from Monday to Tuesday. I'm not familiar with the FEM2018 schedule, but most likely the beer battle will be on Saturday night, so Saturday is out of question. If you already know the schedule, you may propose some good day for this competition. (nick-o-matic?)

Saveload (and other kind of cheating) is forbidden! You have to play in EOL. Offline times won't be counted. Replays have to be saved. You wont get 3 points from a best time if you don't have a replay.

The level pack consists of 24 levels. The levels are quite short, about 20 secs on average. To get points from best total time, you have to drive all times in EOL. Best total time can then be seen from elmaonline. URL to the level pack is: http://elmaonline.net/statistics/levelpack/Virri/

Each level has also a secret area. In order to get point from secret area, you have to touch the secret area sign. For players that use low detail, I have added a tiny arrow that will show the place of the secret area sign. You also have to save a rec and get a witness who can proof that your rec is legit. A witness can be someone else playing at EOL at the moment, or someone IRL spectating your drive. If I'm present and online, I try (and want) to be witness for all of you. But a replay is still needed. I want to collect all best secret area replays.

Shortly:
- 24 hour time
- Play in EOL
- Save recs
- To get secret area point, touch secret area sign and get a witness

At the moment I have about half of the levels ready and I'm quite happy with the levels. But this will most likely be my last level pack. That's because I'm not so active anymore, probably will have less and less time for elma in the future, and because I seldom make level packs anymore. I don't even remember when I made a level pack last time (apart from the Arrows level pack at FEM2017). But I think I still have some kind of "touch" and you will like the level pack :)

So, who will be the Master of Virri?

edit: Levels attached!

Sounds awesome, hope it's open for people not attending FEM also! :)

Should be confirmable that recs are driven in eol, so getting witness for secret area runs seems like a quite big hassle (but i duno how many levs and how hard the secret areas are).

Only awarding points for best TT and not second best seems a bit too discouraging to me. Pretty much guaranteed that best TT will win (unless there's a ton of levs), and would be nice for some incentive to play for TT even if not among the very best players.

We are still allowed to use saveload for practise right? I assume yes, but I'd like to ask since it was not 100% clear to me.

Yes, you can play even if you are not attending FEM. And you will be included in results. Now when I think about it, I can give medals also for people not attending FEM. The other awards are not possible to give :)

There will be 24 levels. Each one of them will have one secret area. A bit like in Ramone's great Under levels :D I hope the secret areas will be hard enough so that everyone won't get them with first try. Some secret areas are of course easier and some harder. One of them may be even impossible though...

Is it really possible to confirm that recs are driven in EOL? If yes, then witness is not needed.

Good point. I will adjust the pointing system and give more points from total times. I will edit the first post.

Well, I can't control that, so yes, it's allowed to use saveload for practice. But there is not so much need for it because most of the levels are quite short.

All run data is publicly available for battles in the api, not sure if for levs in general as well. But I'm also not sure how you'd match a rec with a run, since the public run data only has limited stuff available. Anyway, secret areas in contests have been based simply on recs before (e.g. in Rambo 2), so can't see why nat do it here. Would people really want to cheat? :/

If it's hard to match a rec with a run, I think It's better to go with the "witness system". It shouldn't be a big problem because it's only 24 hours and I try to be online as much as I can.

Only 11 hours to start!!!

I decided that I won't try to hide times during the event. It will be more fun to spy and easier for me to organize this competition. Also you will know when to stop höyling if you aim to get best time in a level. Well, there is not much time for höyling a single level but it will be more easy to decide which feats you want to achieve (secret areas, total times or best times).

There will also be one guest level by Zero [dat]!

Good idea tej, but some levels are very much different without apples. In level 11 the apple is important: you have to dodge it to get to the secret area. And in level 15 you have to take left gravity apple to reach the secret area. So please play the original levels :)

The competition is now over and we have a winner! He actually made a hat-trick: gathered most best times, got best total time and reached all the secret areas! He is Zero [dat], congratulations! Medals were handed for the winners and I will pay the top 3's attendance fees to nick-o-matic as planned.

The only player outside FEM who got points was iltsu, who made best time in level 10. Iltsu, can you send us your WR rec?

All other best times are attached here.

Another very interesting thing is how to reach the secret areas. You can download all secret area replays here: http://zebra.mbnet.fi/Virri_secret_areas.zip They are worth watching! I also want to congratulate the top two players, Zero and adi, who reached all the secret areas! Unbelieveable achievement!

But here are the results:
1. Zero (62 points)
2. adi (54 points)
3. Zweq (36 points)
4. Spef (27 points)

Thanks!

Eyed the win recs and adi+zero secret ares. Good stuff! Was also nice to see different routes or moves to those secret areas in several levs. The prize pool was probably the highest I've ever seen, a total of around 130 euros for top 3!

The levels were absolutely amazing. I wish there were fewer of them, just so that I could give each one of them the time they deserve :) Or, in other words: too little time!!!

Too bad not many other people hoyled for TT, but I was max happy about beating Markku and Spef, even if they played sekret areas for some time instead of hoyling TT :)

Watching the winrecs and secret area recs on the big screen was sick as well ^_^

Thanks for the amazing competition zebra!

Thanks for the nice pack, was very hardcore event, and some of the levels are memorable.

o, I didn't even notice this before: 25% of the 3rd player's attendance price. Wander if I sent too much moneys to nom then or was that 3rd position reward cancelled. No big deal regardless
