We may disagree on a lot of things, Tigro, but when it comes to films it feels like we have very similar tastes.

Interstellar is pretty good, maybe in my top 20 of the decade, but Arrival is easily in my top 10 of all time so it has clear victory.

My votes:

Arrival VS Interstellar

Interstellar is a very good movie but Arrival was just so fascinating and moving to me.

(not sure if I can just barge in at the final stage, so feel free to ignore if voting doesn't work like that)

Arrival. Both films play with the concept of time in fascinating ways and are interesting to think about many days after the viewing, but the human drama is much more impressive in Arrival and that's what I usually care about the most. I love it when sci-fi is not about large-scale stuff like saving the world, but about the impact of fantastic technologies and concepts on the lives of ordinary people. Yeah, there is also a threat of global war in Arrival and I kinda wish it wasn't there (like omg seriously why does everything have to be so "epic" argghhhhhng), but it feels more like a background for what the main character goes through in her mind.

I do get your point, but how can shit not be epic if you have aliens or time travel :D

I think both movies tried to play around with hypothetical scenarios that we all know could happen one day. Humans will most likely go extinct one way or another, and they definitely will when the sun runs out of hydrogen in 5 billion years. Before that point we need to move really far away to a new sun, or create a mobile living station. Who knows how that could be done, but a wormhole is the theoretical solution and instellar did a good job playing around with that idea, or being able to manipulate gravity. Its just cool shit to fantasize about.

Arrival is the same shit, you know we would all be really immature about aliens arriving, and somehow we would probably not even unite as a species to figure out what is going on but instead would turn against each other. It does a good job showing how fragile we are in that situation.

Primer is perfect example of unepic time travel. The mundanity of it all kinda threw me for a loop when I realised just how mind-bogglinly complex that movie was.

Also, the book Arrival is based on, Story Of Your Life (dunno if you read teh yet), is also amazingly unepic, with absolutely none of the unnecessary military stuff they put in Arrival.

Interstellar's path to victory:
  • Winning the group against Coco, Particle Fever, Jojo Rabbit and Mud
  • Kick-Ass
  • In Time
  • The Big Short
  • Gravity
  • Inception
  • Arrival

Could also be interesting to see Arrival's path:
  • Winning the group against The Town, The Social Network, Jodaeiye Nader az Simin / A Separation and The Dark Tower
  • Mad Max: Fury Road
  • Boyhood
  • Room
  • The Dark Knight Rises
  • Whiplash
  • Lost to: Interstellar

First of all, thank you for hosting SveinR.

In my opinion better movies than the finalists got knocked out along the way. Interesting how Interstellar had pretty weak opponents and Arrival had pretty strong ones.

perhaps a bit "boring" winner, but at the same time i think that would be my pick anyway since it's the movie i've watched the most and now want to rewatch again. should rewatch arrival too though.
