Best Movie of the 10's World Cup

Post by SveinR »

It's somehow been 8 years since we last did this - the Best Movie World Cup 2, where we, for the second time, voted over what was the best movie ever. 9 years ago we did the Best Movie of the 00's World Cup, where we sought to find the best movie made between 2000-2009. Finally, the time has come for the long-awaited fourth installment (and everyone knows the fourth movie of a series is the best..): The Best Movie of the 10's World Cup!

We will in this topic together vote over, in a "cup system", what movie was the best of those made between 2010-2019. For an idea of how this works you can see the previous installments linked to above. How many movies we will have in the pool depends on how many suggestions I get - most likely it will be somewhere between 64 and 128. We take 30 of these movies from the current top 30 of the IMDb top movies of the 10's list (this top 30 is posted further down in this post, and that is the list we'll use even if the IMDb list changes during the next week), and the remaining movies to be suggested by you. In this way there will be a base of movies generally accepted as being among the best of the decade, and also it allows you to give your suggestions a bit more thought, as the 'obvious choices' are already included.

I'll give you about a week to suggest candidates in this thread, and then I'll make the first round consisting of 30 movies off IMDb and the rest suggested by you (the pairings for the cup system will be randomized). Keep in mind that there is no use suggesting movies already in the top 30 list posted below, and remember that the movie has to be listed on IMDb as being from 2010-2019. Also, please include an IMDb link to the movie you are suggesting, so I know exactly what movie you mean. When deciding which of your suggestions to include I will try to focus on diversity in directors, genres, years and the like.

This is how the voting rounds will go (ongoing round in bold):

Group stage, part I (80 movies, 16 groups of 5)
Group stage, part II (80 movies, 16 groups of 5)
Round 1: 64 movies, 32 pairs
Round 2: 32 movies, 16 pairs
Round 3: 16 movies, 8 pairs
Quarter-final: 8 movies, 4 pairs
Semi-final: 4 movies, 2 pairs
Final: 2 movies, one pair
Winner decided!

Was it cast for the mass who burn and toil?
Or for the vultures who thirst for blood and oil?

Ok so I haven't been able to start this yet - other stuff have taken up some time. Also there are so many movies suggested that I don't have the energy/time to actually go through everything and cut some from the selection. Therefore, every movie suggested will be in the competition! Also to get a somewhat nice even number I will add a few myself, bringing the total number of movies to a whopping 160!

Additions:
Hopefully I will start this tomorrow (there is a fair bit of imdb-link-collecting etc to do :) )
The rounds will go as follows:
  • 80 pairs, 160 movies
  • 40 pairs, 80 movies
  • 20 pairs, 40 movies
  • 10 pairs, 20 movies
  • Intermediate round: Cut 2 movies out of 10
  • Quarter-final: 4 pairs, 8 movies
  • Semi-final: 2 pairs, 4 movies
  • FINAL: 1 pair, 2 movies!
Was it cast for the mass who burn and toil?
Or for the vultures who thirst for blood and oil?

I have a suggestion, instead of creating the voting for all 80 pairs at once maybe do 10 pairs a week? I ask because otherwise we cannot watch all the movies. Just an idea, not sure if this is how you already do it or not.

Good idea, but I don't think most people will actually have time to watch all movies they haven't seen anyway. It would also make the cup last way longer than intended. So I don't think I'll do it.

Bear in mind though that it's going to be very difficult to be arsed to actually pay some thought to each of 80 pairs in one go, brain gets tired quite quickly. Maybe at least split it in half or so in the first round or two? Then it wouldn't increase the total length that much, but 20 or even 40 pairs to decide in one go are much more accessible than 80.

Probably not realistic to watch up to a 160 movies no matter how much time there is. But in one of the later rounds, like at 10 pairs rounds or so, you can consider a little extra time for people to watch movies, unless rounds are already long enough for that.

I am also considering instead to have an initial group stage... with 32 groups of 5, and choose two group winners from each.

Bonus of this: We would naturally filter out those movies most haven't seen anyway, and end up with 64 movies for the pure cup round.
I dunno, I'll make the initial pairings and if I see there are a bunch of pairs where i haven't seen either or only 1, maybe the group system is better for the first round.

Alright, to use myself as an example:
I have seen 62 of the 160 movies in the list. However, in the randomized pairings for round 1, I have seen both movies in just 10 pairs. Meaning there are 42 pairs where I have only seen one movie, and 28 pairs where I haven't seen any of them...

I consider myself fairly interested in movies, so I suspect a similar pattern would be the case for others. I kinda need to rethink how to do the first round - some sort of group stage, as mentioned, would probably be wise. To ensure that we actually end up with a higher percentage of movies people have seen, and more pairs where you actually have seen both movies.

Ehh, I can't remember it being this complicated the last times :P

INITIAL GROUP STAGE - PART I
Alright, so this is the system we'll use:
I have split the 160 movies into 32 randomized groups of 5 movies. You can vote for up to 3 movies in each group, in ranked order.
If you vote for 3 movies they will get, respectively, 3 points, 2 points and 1 point. If you vote for 2 movies they will get 2 points and 1 point, and if you only vote for 1 movie it will get, naturally, 1 point.
The two group winners from each group will go through, leaving us with a pool of 64 movies for the proper cup round. The rationale behind this system is that we should end up with a higher percentage of movies people have seen, and those that have seen more movies in a given group are given more weight in determining the quality.

What I would advice if you only have seen one movie is: Vote for it, as long as you think it is a good movie! Because the point with this initial group stage is to filter out movies very few have seen.

In this part we vote over the first 16 groups. Then the remaining 16 groups in part II.

Note: You do not have to vote in every group.
The voting lasts through Friday 6th November, 23:59 CET (GMT+1). If you post your votes after the deadline, they may still be included, as long as I haven't yet posted the results. You may edit your post if you change your mind or will add some votes later (please only make your votes in one post).
Also: It's more fun if people actually give some comments along with their votes :)

Even added some comments for extra fun factor :bear: Seen 48 of these 80, but have only 4 in the watchlist, and not very tempted to add many more

Good idea splitting this phase into 2 groups, doing all at once would be tough)

My votes:

Group 1
Annihilation 1p: Another great and unique movie from Alex Garland (Ex Machina)
Boyhood
Bridesmaids
Busanhaeng / Train to Busan
Kimi no na wa. / Your Name. 2p: Loved this movie :)

Group 2
Bohemian Rhapsody
MacGruber
Edge of Tomorrow
Safety Not Guaranteed
The Artist 1p

Group 3
Little Women
The Imposter
21 Jump Street
The Change-Up
Winter's Bone 1p: An authentic, down-to-earth depiction of life in the American midwest

Group 4 - haven't seen any of these :/
John Dies at the End
Moonlight
The Help
Mandariinid / Tangerines
Manchester by the Sea

Group 5
In Time
Hell or High Water 1p: I truly enjoyed this movie, which I would describe as a Western in some sense eventhough it's set in modern-day America
V/H/S
Limitless
American Made

Group 6
The Shape of Water 1p: Loved this
Nightcrawler
Song of the Sea
Hereditary
Contratiempo / The Invisible Guest

Group 7
Source Code
Wish I Was Here
Split
Ted
The Big Short 1p: Great fun, and educational! Have actually showed this a couple of times for my maths students =)

Group 8
Toy Story 3 2p: It pains me not to give this 3p... probably the best 3rd movie in a trilogy ever (well now Toy Story is a quadrilogy for some reason...). Incredibly moving ending scene.
Whiplash 3p: Amazing! And great music :)
12 Years a Slave 1p
American Mary
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

Group 9
The Grand Budapest Hotel
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug 1p: I just can't help but wonder how Guillermo del Toro's version of The Hobbit would have been like...
Black Swan 3p: Darren Aronofsky is one of my favourite directors, and this may just be his best movie
Prisoners
1917 2p

Group 10
Geograf globus propil / The Geographer Drank His Globe Away
Leave No Trace 1p: Absolutely fantastic - if you haven't watched this you definitely should. One of the most emotionally powerful movies I've seen.
La piel que habito / The Skin I Live In
Wreck-It Ralph
How to Train Your Dragon

Group 11
Soul Surfer
Ah-ga-ssi / The Handmaiden
The Wolf of Wall Street 2p: Insanity
Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi 1p: Contrary to "the internet", I actually think this is the best of the new Star Wars episodes.
Hot Tub Time Machine

Group 12
Gisaengchung / Parasite 2p: A weird, twisted movie but really enjoyable!
The Way, Way Back
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 I love the Harry Potter books, and agree with Kopaka that this is the best of the movies. It's in a really strong field here though... generally the movies really pale in comparison to the books, but this is the one I think is closest in capturing the feel of the source material
Shutter Island 1p: A great movie, maybe a bit underrated? Even by me in this round perhaps...
Inside Out 3p: Pixar at its very best. Brilliant.

Group 13
The Martian 1p: Have showed this to science students :)
A Dog's Purpose
The Interview
Machete Have seen this also but just oke
Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa

Group 14
The Hateful Eight 1p
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World
War Dogs
Ex Machina 3p: Just outstanding - I was deeply moved by this. One of the best movies I have seen the past decade for sure.
The Irishman 2p: Scorsese, De Niro, Pesci, Pacino. Gangsters. Enough said.

Group 15
The Lego Batman Movie
Pain & Gain
The Human Centipede III (Final Sequence)
Dag II / The Mountain II
Drive 1p: I thought this was great. Somewhat reminiscent of Taxi Driver in some sense

Group 16
Vacation
Klaus
Life of Pi 1p: For someone who has read the book there were things missing. But it's still good! If you liked this movie and haven't read the book I strongly suggest you do.
Green Book 2p
Joker 3p: Intense!
Was it cast for the mass who burn and toil?
Or for the vultures who thirst for blood and oil?

SveinR wrote: 4 Nov 2020, 23:06 Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi 1p: Contrary to "the internet", I actually think this is the best of the new Star Wars episodes.
Agree on this. For my it was the only one of the 3 that tried to be anything more than a copycat, so it deserves some kudos for that.

pawq wrote: 3 Nov 2020, 00:55 Seen 48 of these 80, but have only 4 in the watchlist, and not very tempted to add many more

Note: Tied points have been sorted by the numbers of 3-pointers, then number of 2-pointers etc.
Was it cast for the mass who burn and toil?
Or for the vultures who thirst for blood and oil?

Re: Best Movie of the 10's World Cup

Post by SveinR »

INITIAL GROUP STAGE - PART II
I have split the 160 movies into 32 randomized groups of 5 movies. Previously we voted over the first 16 groups - in part II we vote over the remaining 16 groups.

Note: You do not have to vote in every group.
The voting lasts through Tuesday 10th November, 23:59 CET (GMT+1). If you post your votes after the deadline, they may still be included, as long as I haven't yet posted the results. You may edit your post if you change your mind or will add some votes later (please only make your votes in one post).
Also: It's more fun if people actually give some comments along with their votes :)
