Other games with replays where ppl compete for fastest time?

Discuss, argue, whine, talk but not about Elma.

Other games with replays where ppl compete for fastest time?

Post by Sprocket »

The combination of all the record lists and the replay functionality is part of what makes the Elma scene so unique. It's really a shame there isn't more games that utilizes this.

Do you know any other games where there is a "scene" dedicated to records and replays? The only other game I have come across so far is Quake where there was (and still is) some persistent players that keep improving their replays of "Quake Done Quick", "Quake done Quicker" etc.

If you dont know about QDQ then check out:

this example is lame....but I had and still has Track & Field for PSX and found a site with records...But it was piece of cake to cheat there if u just wanted to just make up some distance or time and write it to them...I had the record (mayb wr :) ) in triple jump or what its called and I didnt cheat... :D
However u could save your recs on Track & Field I think it was autosave...
Dont know if this belongs to topic

Dam0r they should make the demos in mpeg too (ye ye, not in Elma either) because too much effort to install these games just because of cool demos.

There is a divx movie out of the latest QDQ here:

http://www.planetquake.com/QdQ/qdqwav.html

The video is pretty poor quality. If you still have quake laying around then check out the replays instead. Quake looks pretty good these days if you use a modfied version like opengl quake or fuhquake etc. (http://www.fuhquake.net/index.html).

Team17's StuntGP (3D RC racing game) has a "Time Trial" mode where you compete against ghost driver for better and better lap times. Pretty höylish game, i played it a lot. I do not know whether there is scene or not.

If you're are looking for a game with a scene; ever heard of Blizzard?
They made: Warcraft, Starcraft and Diablo.
These games have their own scenes. It is not about time, but I think Starcraft is still the game I liked most in my live. Lateron it had a replay feature and it's so fucking nice to see profi-recs. In Starcraft (and its expension BroodWar) people could become real profi's and urn their money with playing tournaments and getting sponsormoney. Once a friend of me, read an interview of one of these profi's. (forgot his name) He was asked if he played other games besides Starcraft/BroodWar and he answered he played Elasto Mania sometimes. Thats how we first heard of this game.

In the summer of 2002 I höyled "Hot Wheels Gold" and took 3 out of 4 WRs possible. (similar to Slicks n´Slide)
It was a shareware & nobody had registered it so people just could play the first 4 out of ≈50 tracks...
It was fun wile it lasted....the site went offline and later I heard that it had something to do with copyright violations. :?

I also played some Hot Wheels II or III but the records were too tough for me.
Check it out if its still out there.

May as well use DD if you have it...is it any good?

Anyone watched alot of NES/SNES movies inside emulators?

www.zophar.net has pretty massive collection of those, I suggest checking some if you're interested.
It's a shame people doesn't really do those anymore that much, although the reason is simple, NES movies (.NSM) can be viewed only with Nesticle, which is extremely outdated and uncompatible with NT based windozes. SNES movies does work more often but they also seem to have some problems with NTs too.. the movies tend to just get fucked up sometimes.

Anyway, all you have to do is to get Nesticle for NES movies and ZSNES for SNES movies, get the movie file (extremely small-sized) and get the corresponding game as ROM.

Well, half-life speedruns are common nowadays, and I have played Half-life mods where you are supposed to finish the map as fast as possible. It was cool, especially becouse thats one game I dont suck at.

Then, there's a hl mod called SvenCoop, and some people try to finsh the maps as fast as possible, mostly with company (clan).

Well, i can say that i pretty much love the speedruns in Goldeneye ( N64 ), they are simply insane, especially the 00Agent replays...

Check that site : http://speeddemosarchive.com/GoldenEye.html

Or if you search for some speedruns in any games, maybe you'll find it in here : http://speeddemosarchive.com/GameList.html ( Around 200 games )

Last Autumn me and Zweq (earlier there were also veezay, mengerle and cyre) played this nice little ball-game called Ballance, which used to have online high score lists. Too bad the lists worked so that you just uploaded one file (like state.dat) and it calculated your result, so after a while there came a few cheaters and the high scores were removed. There was also no possibility to save replays so we had to record our runs with an external video-capturing program called Fraps.

If anyone is interested, check out http://www.ballance.org. The game is great fun to play, but not being able to compete removes the most fun of it :(

There also used to be a collection of me and Zweq's videos on the site under Ballance heroes -section, but it looks like the package was too big to be hosted and it's been taken off.
