Best FPS Shooters Of All Time!

Post by Crypt »

Whats your favourite first person shooter on the computer? Mine is probably Call of Duty right now, very impressive. My other favourites has to be Half-Life, althought I havent tried Half-Life 2 nor will it work on my dads computer until he gets a new video card. Unreal Tournament is good and I just downloaded Unreal Tournament 2004 but It was only like 200mb, I saw on the site it had 5gb requirements or something, :P I know they compress them really good but 5gb? my computer upstairs has 4gb! So tell me your favourite FPS shooter!

I've hardly played all FPS games out there, but I can't imagine anything being better than Half-Life 2. I wouldn't put it solely in the FPS genre either.. It kinda goes beyond that.
Was it cast for the mass who burn and toil?
Or for the vultures who thirst for blood and oil?

I only have Unreal Tournament but i played once Unreal Tournament 2004, all the Unreal games rock hardcore :D 8O

... and if you wanna go oldschool, you have to check out Doom2, definitly worth a good look, nice secret levels and cool guns ! ( and please tell me if you got further than level 5 on Nightmare )

to me its half-life 1 and its mods, cause i spent an insane amount of time on it....
counter-strike 1.3 (there was still some "action" in that version)
natural selection (so fuckin cool, variating gameplay)
the specialists (best action mod)
action half-life (handcannon lamer JEEEHAA)
and other very funny small mods, + never ending options to create maps ( i know some very talented mapper)

yea, actually i think its mabye better game than elma, though its not comparable at all, maybe the level of addictivity (?).

haven`t tried HL2 though....

At the moment I play Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory pretty much. I haven't tried CS:S, but ET really kicks ass. The game is free and there are very few cheaters.

Best fps... Maybe wolf3d or doom ;)

And I believe this bad toys game was a total spin off of doom. Just all creeps were replaced with yellow smileys and furries, with guns ofcourse.

System Shock2. Although it was maybe more of an horror-RPG, it still had first person and shooting also in it. :)
Such one of the greatest games ever.

Gonna go through FPS games more thoroughly, mostly for nostalgy and the possibility of learning some history about this genre which seems to be the most popular in the gaming industry nowadays.

Found some funny video about Maze War which seems to be like from 1974, on, god knows what platform. FPS? seems so. 3D? not really.

In the 90's it seems like the whole FPS thing just exploded, especially after the wolfenstein 3D (1992) . My guess is that it just was a turning point when pieces finally started to fit together, one of the pieces being hardware technology. It is a really interesting point of FPS games, this wolfenstein 3D.

What I have played, the usual "cant miss it" games:
Doom (1993)
Duke Nukem 3D(1996)

then some funny fps games I had never seen before
Blake Stone: Aliens of Gold (1993)
Star Wars: Dark Forces (1995)

Ok as I kept browsing I found this link from wikipedia. And I dont have to write anymore since it seems like every fps of every year is cataloged there.
http://www.mobygames.com/browse/games/1 ... on/?o=2a14

Anyway, it's time to get to the point. I liked many FPS, Doom, Duke nukem 3D, Quake, Half-Life, Unreal Tournament, Deus ex, Half-Life 2, F.E.A.R.

They're all good games, but Doom is the best FPS ever made. Unreal Tournament is also a very, very good. Deus ex is simply one of the best games ever made, but since you can complete it without shooting at all(?) I don't see it as pure FPS. I guess that's it for me

oh btw did anyone play a game called rise of the triad ever? :D took me a while to find it without remembering the name and not seen it for over 10 years. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vqAQLHkRs18 was pretty ok FPS, but I played it like 10 times less than doom anyway

Yesh, Doom was, and still is, an awesome game. I remember playing it with my friend when we were max young. Was awesome.

Nowdays, my favorite game is, well are, Half-Life, Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2 episode 1, and Half-Life episode 2. The Half-Life saga is just amazing. The gameplay, the story, the creativity, it's all mindblowing. Lately I've found myself hoyling certain Half-Life 2 segments. Speedrunning them, so to say. I dislike the whole object surfing 'trick', and I'm against scripted bunnyhop. But you can still do some insane shortcuts without those 2 'cheats'. I've found myself hoyling certain 5-minute segments for over 2 hours.

And if this thread isn't only about single-player games, I'll have to mention Half-Life 2 death match as well. A really nice game. I can play dm_overwatch for hours. Also, Left 4 Dead deserves mentioning. Despite the lack of versus levels at the moment, it's still so insanely addictive, fun, interesing and all that. It's a perfect lan game.

I'll also have to mention Counter Strike 1.5 and Counter Strike 1.6. But those are only (really) fun if you play them seriously. Playing public games can be boring and repetitive. To really enjoy Counter Strike you really need to play PCWs.

Goldeneye 007 = ez best. Never liked FPS very much. I liked a lot Turok II even if it wasn't all that good, too. It was damn scary when I was 7, though. I always made nightmares and couldn't sleep.

I'm a big fan of FPS games and I especially enjoy single player story mode. Here's a list of all FPS games I have on Steam that I have completed*:

Blake Stone: Aliens of Gold
Blake Stone: Planet Strike
The Ultimate DOOM
DOOM II: Hell on Earth
Duke Nukem 3D: Megaton Edition
F.E.A.R.
F.E.A.R.: Extraction Point
F.E.A.R.: Perseus Mandate
F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin (*still playing this one)
Half-Life
Half-Life: Opposing Force
Half-Life: Blue Shift
Half-Life 2
Half-Life 2: Episode One
Half-Life 2: Episode Two
Shadow Warrior Classic Redux
Star Wars: Dark Forces
Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II
Star Wars Jedi Knight: Mysteries of the Sith
Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast
Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy
Wolfenstein 3D
Wolfenstein 3D: Spear of Destiny

I highly recommend the Half-Life 2 series as well as Duke 3D and Shadow Warrior games

Perfect Dark for Nintendo 64, dayum I hoyled that like crazy.
There was this ranking system counting from 21 to 1, I was at 3rd which was called "Invincible" and 1st place would be "Perfect".

It took like 1 year to get that far with the point system the game had, and yes I played a lot with my friend, too much actually.
Before I reached rank 1 a friend to my friend "accidentally" removed my fucking profile, I hated him.

Found the ranking list:

Code: Select all

21: Beginner
20: Trainee
19: Amateur
18: Rookie
17: Novice
16: Trooper
15: Agent
14: Star Agent
13: Special Agent
12: Expert
11: Veteran
10: Professional
9: Dangerous
8: Deadly
7: Killer
6: Assassin
5: Lethal
4: Elite
3: Invincible
2: Near Perfect
1: Perfect

I never even played Shadow Warrior back in the day, so there's nothing nostalgic about it for me. Yet I still really enjoyed it when I played it for the first time a couple of years ago. It's a great game.

Perfect Dark I have never played or even watched any game play footage, but I hear it's another awesome game. Rare made it, and they only made the best games.
