Best Movie World Cup

I've been thinking about doing this for some time now, and I'm actually quite surprised that it hasn't been done yet. I'm guessing the reason for this might be that there is such an incredible amount of movies out there, so it's hard to figure out just how to do this properly. However, I think I've come up with a concept that should work well. You might not agree with my idea, but hey, that's the advantage of being the organizer isn't it.

If you're unfamiliar with this "World Cup" business, you'll get an idea by looking at these threads of previous 'World Cups': Carbonated Beverage, Fruit, Animal, Hot chicks, Elma level, Most hated Elma level, Funniest person, Cartoon, Funniest movie, ryttmÃ¤star, Animated series, Martial artists, Hot chicks 2

So, what is my concept then? In order to have the least amount of complications when it comes to which candidates should go through to the next round, the obvious answer would be to have a starting number of candidates that is an exponent of 2. But i find 64 to be a bit too small amount, and 128 to be too many. So the number i settled on, is 80. 96 would also work well, but again, it's a bit too much. Edit: The total number of movies has later been changed to 96.

So we'll have 96 movie candidates in the first round. My idea is that we take 50 of these from the current top 50 of the IMDb top250 list (this top50 is posted further down in this post, and that is the list we'll use even if the IMDb list changes during the next week), and the remaining 46 to be suggested by you. There are a number of reasons for this, mainly:
1. To have a base of movies that are generally accepted to be among the best ever.
2. To have movies from every decade since the '30s.
3. To have movies in a wide variety of genres.
4. A great number of these movies would probably have been suggested by you anyway, so instead of you going with "the obvious choices", you can give it some more thought.

So if I think the IMDb list works so well, why not just pull all the candidates from there? Well, obviously IMDb users aren't perfect, and these World Cups always work better when Mopolauta users have been able to suggest what candidates to have.

I'll give you about a week to suggest candidates in this thread, and then I'll make the first round consisting of 50 movies off IMDb and 46 movies suggested by you. Keep in mind that there is no use suggesting movies already in the top50 list posted below. Also, please include an IMDb link to the movie you are suggesting, so I know exactly what movie you mean. For instance, if you were to just suggest "Scarface", I couldn't know if you meant the 1932 original or the 1983 remake.

This is how the voting rounds will go (ongoing round in bold):

Round 1: 96 movies, 48 pairs
Round 2: 48 movies, 24 pairs
Round 3: 24 movies, 12 pairs
Round 4: 12 movies, 6 pairs
Round 5: 6 movies, 3 pairs
Intermediate round 1: Vote for one of the 3 movies that were excluded after Round 5 to come back in the competition.
Round 6: 4 movies, 2 pairs
Final: 2 movies, one pair
Winner decided!

Jsut a little question:

Say we get more than 30 additional suggestions, which should stay and which should go? Can you suggest a movie which has already been mentioned in the additional suggestions by the mopositers, so that it has a bigger chance of going through to round 1?

What I'm asking is: If there are too many movies, is it a bigger chance for one to go to the first round, if more people suggest it?

Probably.

I guess there could also be a possibility of increasing the total number of movies to 96, if the interest is high enough. But I don't want the first voting round to consist of so many movies that it'll "scare people away".

Dani's suggestion might also be a possibility, but then this might be relying a bit too heavily on IMDb...

Btw people, please remember to include IMDb links! There are several movies called Brazil, insane guy, but I suspect you're talking about this one.

If people want to, I suppose we can change the total number of movies to 96. In that case, the voting rounds would go like this:

So, there would be one less intermediate round (if this is a good thing or not, I'm not sure..). An advantage is that there would be nearly as many movies in the list suggested by you now, as the pre-chosen ones (46 contra 50).
But is 96 movies and 48 pairs in the first round a bit too much (Of course, one doesn't have to vote in every pair)? You tell me .

I thought about that if there's too many suggested movies people could rank the movies with the one the like the best on top and so on. So you take everyones no. 1 first and then no. 2 and so on untill you have enough.

I think I'll base my selection on a variety of things; i.e. what decade the movies are from, the director, the genre, etc. (so that, if the movie in question is from a decade that already has several movies in the list, or a director that already has several movies in the list, the chance of me choosing that one would go down. And vice versa). In order to get a varied list in the end.

The final list of 96 movies has been made. The tally of movies per decade is as follows:

1930s: 1 movie
1940s: 7 movies
1950s: 7 movies
1960s: 9 movies
1970s: 14 movies
1980s: 14 movies
1990s: 24 movies
2000s: 20 movies

The reason for there being so many movies from the 90s and 00s here, is none other than that you suggested by far most movies from those two decades. The 46 user suggested movies have all been assembled from the suggestions in this thread.
In making the list, I've taken into consideration the decade the movie was made in (so that if there are few movies from that decade in the list, then that movie will be included), the director (so that one director doesn't have an abundance of movies in the list), the genre (for variety), etc.

The pairings are (almost) completely random: The list of 96 movies has been shuffled so that two and two movies have switched places 100 000 times, then the pairs have been made as the first vs the second, the third vs the fourth, etc, from the shuffled list.
