ez leap year

Post by sierra »

So, today is 29th February (unless you're a Muslim, or something even stranger).

It doesn't feel any different to any other day to me, but since this day only comes around once every 4 years, maybe it's time to do/say something special. Please build on this theme below.

But isn't it the 24th that's the leap day, so today isn't really special, it's just the 28th that's called the 29th instead, it's the 24th that's the special day.

Hm yes, likewise. However, it won't always comply, as "Years which are evenly divisible by 100 are not leap years, unless they are also evenly divisible by 400, in which case they are leap years. For example, 1600 and 2000 were leap years, but 1700, 1800 and 1900 were not. Going forward, 2100, 2200, 2300, 2500, 2600, 2700, 2900, and 3000 will not be leap years, but 2400 and 2800 will be."

On second thought, of course it will always comply: If a year is a leap year, the Olympics will also take place that year. Just that some Olympics take place on non-leap years.

no but the olympics are every 4 years, there is no change in this, a leap year is every 4 years and this doesnt change either, thus the olympics will always be in a leap year

No. A leap year is not necessarily every 4 years: "Years which are evenly divisible by 100 are not leap years, unless they are also evenly divisible by 400, in which case they are leap years."

I'm amazed you even respond to his utterly idiotic remark, after you elaborately explained the case in a more than explicit fashion. Ky's just been mocking the overserious person that you are, face it.

(Yes, I know you were joking, but even this joking of yours is in an all too serious fashion.)

because there is sum 23 hours 59 mins 54 seconds or whatefak in a day, that adds up to 1/4 day every year, so instead of fucking up the days; we add one every four years.

Totally wrong. Not only is it, as Svein Rune Saxrud has pointed out enough times above, NOT every four years, but in fact even after adjusting in the currently accepted fashion, our temporal year does not exactly match the true solar year. Common sense should tell you that it wouldn't, for intuitively it would be too happy an accident that our crude, back-of-an-envelope rule of thumb would be precise enough to perfectly capture the movement of a celestial body of the Sun's size. We necessarily miss, and have always missed, the solar year every year, and undergo a constant process of adjustment to reclaim or create new time.

Even this process of adjustment itself needs to be constantly adjusted because, as you would know if you had read the wikipedia page, precession of the equinoxes moves the position of the vernal equinox with respect to the perihelion and so changes the length of the vernal equinoctial year.

Not a very clear explanation I admit, but you're a Christian, so what does truth matter to you anyways.

The Bible is the word of God, the best book ever in existence, offering God's all-knowing, all-powerful insight into truth. Surely you can find the answer to your question there?
