Eurovision Song Contest 2008

Post by zworqy »

Discuss.

Sweden is as usual over-confident, most "experts" think the song will be like top 10 but it won't.

Finland sends heavy metal music again but crappy this time.

But I just heard teh Latvian song ("Wolves of the Sea") for the first time and it's SO FUCKING GREAT. ez winnerz!

A couple of nice songs in first semi imo, though not really any real good ones. Only one that didn't go through that I'd liked to have seen in the final was Montenegro.

Let's hope for some great songs tonight :P

I don't know why, but I watched it all through today. My ears felt bad afterwards, the only thing which didn't seem to have the compressor on brickwall settings was the danish band. I somewhat liked cyprus too, but ofcourse captain jack & his motley latvian seagulls had to seize the flag and victory upon them. :|

Sweden won in 1999. With a song that was a downright Abba-clone:

Charlotte Nilsson - Take Me To Your Heaven
Was it cast for the mass who burn and toil?
Or for the vultures who thirst for blood and oil?

Watched most of the songs except 9-14 (sach energy just dropped after dinner so i fell asleep) but i didnt really like any of them. None of them was good in my ears just different grades of bad-decent. Greece shouldve won instead of Russia, sach intetsägande song from Russia, sach intetsägande that if i heard it 2 days from now i wouldnt recognize it. :X

My favorites:

Armenia: Sirusho - Qele Qele
Bosnia and Herzegovina: Laka - Pokušaj
Croatia: Kraljevi Ulice and 75 cents - Romanca
Norway: Maria - Hold On Be Strong
Albania: Olta Boka - Zemrën E Lamë Peng

Several others were good too (Turkey, Greece, Ukraine, Israel), and Russia is a perfectly fine winner really.

Amazing, such is the case too with my country. It has been ages since we got into the finals, and every time the press comes like 'omg we got a winner here'. Same with the coming football tourney in a week or two, holland probably won't make it through the poule, but still everyone dreams of a revision of '88.

My favourites were Albania, Bulgaria, Latvia and Poland. I guess Russia was fine for a winner, but there were still many others I'd rather had seen winning. Pretty good year this year again <33

Oi! Less of that! :P

Looks like this contest is more and more about diplomatic relations and racism than the music. Bad times :(

Nah, don't believe the bitterness of Terry Wogan. If you look behind the results you'll find that the so-called West/East divide doesn't exist: In the 2007 competition, if you only count the votes from Western European nations, the top10 is nearly equal as if you only count the votes from Eastern European nations. I haven't bothered to check this in the 2008 competition yet, but I'd be surprised if the same wasn't the case now. In any case, Norway with its top5 placement should show that not only Eastern Europeans do well (Norway actually got points from everyone but 8 nations, out of a total of 43).

And in my opinion the top10 in the final of 2008 pretty much consists of the 10 best songs this year.

And another thing: The Eastern European countries take this competition very seriously, and puts a lot of prestige and money into it and sends some of their most popular artists. So it's only natural that they'll do better, when they actually bother to send better songs.

Its not just the Wogan though. Although he has been able to predict who a lot of countries will give the big points to...

No one wants to give us points anymore. Even if the top 10 were the top 10, I definitely dont think our guy was the worst! Im bitter too :P

Youre right though, the Eastern nations take it a lot more seriously than we do. Its a massive joke over here, no realy serious artists would bother with it.

It wasn't very hard to predict, considering the first 7 point receivers were already shown. All you needed to do to predict the last 3 point receivers, most of the time, was to see which of the top 10 didn't receive points already :)

I agree that Britain's song this year definitely didn't deserve to be placed so poorly though. It was much better than most of their recent entries..
