You are to expect a cacophonous mess without a single interesting character. And a big, loud mess that loses its few good ideas in a morass of convoluted storytelling that it has, sadly, confused with stylish innovation.

yeah Inglourious Basterds is the best i've seen this year and probably the last few years (last year would have been Gran Torino). Been wondering when Basterds was coming out on DVD, and wondering what Extras are going to come with it.

i'll be seeing Avatar when it comes out. want to be good of course, but yeah hmm i think it might be a let down.

what have your favourite movies of the past 5 years? try to keep it to one or two per year, but yeah, can be hard :I

2009 - Basterds and District 9
2008 - Gran Torino and Slumdog
2007 - out of 3:10 to Yuma, Superbad and No Country for Old Men
2006 - The Departed, Little Miss Sunshine and The Prestige
2005 - Crash and Wedding Crashers

Extras on Inglourious Basterds:

Standard disc:
Extended & Alternated Scenes
Nation’s Pride Featurette
Trailers

Blu-Ray:
Extended & Alternated Scenes
Roundtable Discussion with Quentin Tarantino, Brad Pitt and Elvis Mitchell (31 mins) (HD)
The Making of Nation’s Pride (HD)
The Original Inglorious Bastards
A Conversation with Rod Taylor (HD)
Rod Taylor on Victoria Bitters (HD)
Quentin Tarantino’s Camera Angle
Hi Sallys
Film Poster Gallery Tour with Elvis Mitchell
Inglourious Basterds Poster Gallery
Theatrical Trailers (HD)

Duno if that list is correct but it's what I could find.

Impsy hard making a list like yours just like that, but I'll try. I'm going by the year they had premiere in Sweden, which will fukk it up a bit.

2009 - Inglourious Basterds (Gran Torino, Benjamin Button, District 9 and Slumdog all had premiere here but they cant beat IB)
2008 - Låt Den Rätte Komma In (Great movie which is shot partly here in rather small town of Luleå (for example the ending scene is))
2007 - Ratatouille (Love it, my first Pixar-bluray)
2006 - 300 (Paper-thin story but not to forget movies are a visual medium, 300 is like Louvren-worthy at times) (Little Miss Sunshine, Zwartboek (really 2007 DVD premiere), The Prestige also max good ones but I went with the odd choice)
2005 - Sin City (Finding Neverland, Crash strong runner-ups)

My list is very boring, considering that I've seen so few "new" movies during these 5 years. Anyway, I go by release dates in Sweden, here goes:

2005: Life aquatic and Die Vetten Jahre Sind Vorbei
2006: The Prestige
2007: The Darjeeling Limited (not that good, but no competition since I've seen so few from this year)
2008: Slumdog Millionare (same as above)
2009: District 9 (same as above)

2005 was the only year I had many films to choose from really. Guess I need to see more newer films.

I've written in my blog which was my favourite movie each year since 05, so by looking back at those posts, these are it:

2009 - Some good candidates could be The Hangover, Camille and Sunshine Cleaning
2008 - Cloverfield
2007 - Transformers
2006 - Imagine Me & You
2005 - Star Wars Episode III Revenge of the Sith

Avatar - 8.5/10

first time i've ever seen a movie in 3D. i was happily surprised with how much i liked this movie, and i'm sure others here, like John, will really enjoy this movie. Visually, i thought it was amazing. not sure how much 3D contributed to my opinion though. the world he created was very beautiful and exciting.

the acting, i thought, was decent. sam worthington i liked, but didn't like Michelle Rodriguez playing her usual "tough bitch" cliche role. found it annoying.

apart from the fairly cheesy moments (atleast a couple, would have probably rated it almost 10 without them), the story was decent. i felt for the characters, which is essential for any good movie.

it goes for almost 3hrs, but it didn't drag out. the action was nice too.

You're right about that! Just went to the first opportunity to see Avatar in Luleå, the first show on the day of the premiere. For the record I saw it in 2D (but will most likely see it in 3D during xmas). I had high hopes, but I thought it started off pretty fast, almost too fast - almost. We're taken to the world of Pandora very quickly, a familiar yet alien environment but oh so spellbinding. What we get to see is eye-candy, what we get to hear is ear-candy. The music is amazing, it totally effected my emotions during the movie and I was in this deep state of wellbeing. At times I got chills because it was so magnificent and epic(!).

Like you bob, I really felt for the characters. More for the Avatar-ones than their human counterparts. James Cameron does a great job creating the different personalities human-wise as well as Na'vi-wise. Sure, there are some clichés here, just like within the story, but it doesn't take away much from the movieexperience I just had.

Sam Worthington was good yeah, Michelle Rodriguez was not as bad as I thought from reading your post bob - tough chick in a man's world but not over the top imo. Can only congratulate the cast and crew behind this flick, they have created an epic adventure lasting for 2h 41m without ever slowing down. Fuck! this movie made sach an impact on me, I was taken to their world completely. Could go on writing shit for a few mins more but instead take my advice and go see the movie on the big screen and then go buy the Bluray or DVD next year, because that's what I will do!

From the text you just read this might not be so surprising:

I just read John's latest posts in here and somehow I got that impression too o,o Maybe it's just that I don't think Avatar can be good at all. And no, I haven't seen it.

Then I must say, that I didn't like Inglourious Basterds that much. And what's with all the fans who write even the name of the movie wrong (it's Inglourious) ? I see it everywhere when someone writes about the movie.

Includes spoilers of IB:
I think Quentin Tarantino is that kind of a director that people like his films just because of his name. I've seen some Tarantino's movies that are good, but not all of them are. IB was not bad it was not very good either. I started watching it, got to the end of the first cd (oh yes, I downloaded it!) and then I just... stopped because I was tired o,o Not because of the movie, but it was quite late at that time and the movie wasn't interesting enough to keep me up anymore. I can't even remember when I started watching it (maybe 2-3 weeks ago) but finished it yesterday. And of course when I continued from the 2nd cd, I was confused as hell. I couldn't remember anything that had happened nor the characters there are, just teh Brad Pitt. Then there was this some bitch who got killed because a shoe fit to her foot, that I don't know what a fuck it was all about. And I was also surprised to see that another woman in the film booth, because I thought there was only one woman in the movie and she already got killed. Maybe there's a reason why I didn't like the movie that much, but I don't even care that much. I watched the first part very intuitively but it was not that good. The idea of killing nazis sounds quite fun and I think that's a big reason why people like IB, though the movie wasn't actually that good. Feel free to tell me that I'm wrong.

Hm I'm not too sure about that, hype doesnt give me goosebumps during a movie. This was pretty epic. Im not easily effected by peer pressure I can assure you.

Pasting link to rating of Avatar doesnt really help to prove my point but http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0499549/ratings not all of these can be hype-ratings. This movie has something worth seeing.

Because the name doesn't follow conventional English spelling, it would be Inglorious Bastards in proper english.

Inglorious Bastards
Inglourious Basterds
Oh my god, really? Are u sure it's not spelled Inglourious or Basterds properly?!?! Tru faaanz should be careful with the spelling, and if they are willing to write basterds instead of bastards, then they should also include that little extra u there too. Inglorious Bastards would be fine for me!

And I'm not sure what was Xiph trying to say with his link, there's no sach Inglorious Basterds listed o,o

But now that I think of it, people who speak native english often fuck up the spelling of many words. The most annoying must be the mix up of the words 'whole' and 'hole'. This Inglourious/Inglorious Basterds/Bastards must be confusing the shit out of some people!

Look VJ, i was just explaining why people fuck it up, personally i think that most people have some form of incapability to speak English properly, often using everyday words in the complete wrong cases.

But don't get aggressive at me because i explained something, there's also the possibility that most people don't care enough to slow down and read every letter. They get inglourious wrong because they know it's inglorious in english, they get basterds right because they can't fucking spell properly in the first place.

Wow :P I didn't know me writing "basterds" instead of "bastards" would cause a hassle! I didn't really have anything in mind when I wrote Basterds except that I was surprised when I saw that the title of the film was "basterds" instead of "bastards" and so it stuck to my head is all.

who gives a shit how it's spelt. welcome to the internetz. the movie is still the same.

i agree with pretty much everything John said in his review of Avatar - and i was kinda expected it to be a flop. it's a great movie. i felt that it really made me forget everything else (including probably the most retarded cinema audience i've ever been in a cinema with) and just be entertained for 2h 41m. visually, it's amazing.

how bout you basterds go bloody watch it then come back oki dokiz karaokiz.

edit: yeah i agree about tarantino being one of those directors. i personally don't really like most of his work, but there are some nice ones. Inglourious Basterds and Pulp Fiction would be my favourites. Reservoir Dogs is alright too. hate Kill Bill.

IB and Avatar would probably close to being on par for me.

Davy Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier (1955) : 7/10
Legends (and myths) from the life of famed American frontiersman Davey Crockett are depicted in this feature film edited from television episodes... Bought it for my dad last Christmas and he finally found the time to watch it few weeks ago. Decided to watch with him and was somehow pleased with what i witnessed. The story really is quite simple, Davy finds himself in many little adventures throughout the movie; he helps some indians, he runs for mayor and he defends the fort of Alamo against the Mexicans. The different stories are told in a very naive and romanced way if i may say so. Reminded me of some stories i was told by my father before going to bed in my childhood. Was really cheasy, but in a good way. I'm guessing most people of my age will not like it but i found myself enjoying the ride for a while, felt a bit stretched by the end though.

Dead Snow (2009) : 9/10
A ski vacation turns horrific for a group of medical students, as they find themselves confronted by an unimaginable menace: Nazi zombies. I am a fan of horror flicks so i was bound to watch this one from the moment i saw the trailer. The movie started quite slow with some quite bad acting (or was it the dubbing?) so i was somehow perplex. But as soon as i saw the first 2 kills, i understood this wasn't the typical humorous zombie movie, this one was going to be different. And boy was i right! From that point on, the movie was extremely gory (had never seen that amount of intestines in one movie) and very surprising. As for the second half of the film, that's where the humor really picked on for me. I was laughing and grossed out for the rest of the movie up until the very end of it. In summary, very good movie for fans of comedy/horror movies, a must see!

Donnie Darko (2001) : 9/10
A troubled teenager is plagued by visions of a large bunny rabbit that manipulates him to commit a series of crimes, after narrowly escaping a bizarre accident. I've had this movie for around 5 months now and still hadn't had time to watch it. Finally got around to it yesterday evening and i was not disappointed. As much as i could not quite grasp the exact message of the movie on the first watch, i did enjoy every minute of this movie. The characters are very interesting, from Donnie Darko to his english teacher (Drew Barrymore) passing by the 6 foot tall bunny Frank, each and everyone of them caught my attention. The story, while being very convoluted, was very deep. Each event and chapter in the film brought new questions and made the movie very intriguing in its ensemble. You might not understand everything but this movie sure deserves a watch.

Groundhog Day (1993) : 8/10
A weatherman finds himself living the same day over and over again. I consider myself a very big movie lover and most of my friends were surprised to hear i had never seen Groundhog Day. My brother's girlfriend bought it recently and i finally had the chance to watch it. I am not the biggest fan of Bill Murray unless he plays a detached humorous cynical character (like in Ghostbusters) so i was quite pleased with him in this movie. While not being the greatest movie of all time, this is an excellent chill-out movie to watch on a Christmas afternoon. The characters are all pleasant and they better be as we observe them repeat the same day all along the movie. Cool film, i liked it a lot.

The Road (2009) 9/10

The Propoition (2005) 8/10

Just extraordinary films, both are from the same director, australian John Hillcoat, who has his own style and intelligent vision on such hollywood genres like western of disaster film. With excelent soundtracks by Nick Cave, which create atmosphere and keep in tension.
Conclusion, must see. At least, The Road, because of excelent actors pair.
