Zombieland 8/10

Kinda cool, nice characters and movie references etc. The chick was hot and amazingly, the child actor wasn't horrible.

Yes, this is how it's done. You couldn't make a modern style movie about Cthulhu.

The White Ribbon ?/10

It is a great movie. It is really good. The actors are fantastic. The sense of time is very realistic. The story is great. If I had to rate it it would be 8/10 because -1 for all actors having different German dialects and -1 because 144 minutes is way too short.
But fuck it, I say 9/10. Or 10/10 you chose.

This is England- 8/10
Loved the first half but somehow it lost a 9/10 rating during the last half. Very good nevertheless

Whisky Galore! - 5/10
Wasn't really in the mood for b/w movie but it was decent.

Forgot:

Zathura - 5/10
Strong 5. Great familyadventure, way better and cooler than Jumanji.

Updated my list with many titles I've seen before and remembered today.

Beauty and the Beast (1991) - 9/10

This is a great Disney classic for me. The music is well composed, the characters are funny, the plot simple and so Disney. It gets a 9/10 because of how much I liked this movie when I was a child, which is pretty much its main goal.

De père en flic (Father and Guns) (2009) - 9/10

One of the best French-Canadian cinematographic productions, and clearly the best of 2009. The actors are convincing and the action dangerously funny. Pictures well a certain rivalry between baby-boomers and 18-30s. A must-see for Mawane and BoneLESS; for the others, well, if you can find the English version (subbed or dubbed, I don't know what it is), watch it and hope it's well translated :)

Fantasia (1940) - 9/10

Night on the Bald Mountain? Sorcerer's Apprentice? Masterpiece.

The Incredibles (2004) - 9/10

Probably the best (technically speaking) animation movie at the time, extremely well made and funny. Jack-Jack is so damn funny and cute you've gotta love this movie. Haven't got much to say on it though, it's just a plain nice and well done movie.

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King - 9/10

The last of the trilogy is, in my opinion, the best and the most epic. I haven't read the books, but those movies are really worth watching, though they weren't, to me, absolute masterpieces. The Return of the King still deserves a 9.

5150, rue des Ormes (2009) - 8/10

Based on the book by Patrick Sénécal, this movie can keep you interested for its whole length. I liked how fucked up it turned (though I know Patrick Sénécal, so it didn't surprise me at all). Patrick Sénécal is often compared to Stephen King, and his books are insanely good.

Bon Cop, Bad Cop (2006) - 8/10

The film of the year in Quebec in 2006 (or at least one of the few main films). Patrick Huard is doing really good, and the action is cool. Though it wasn't a super great movie to me, almost put a 7 actually.

Monsters, Inc. (2001) - 8/10

Not much to say on that, it was a very decent movie.

My Sister's Keeper (2009) - 8/10

Great movie. I didn't find it quite as much touching as it should have been, but it did bring a little tear to my eye. Abigail Breslin is so a cute little girl that Jappe would sure want to rape her. Really, she was very sweet and she made me smile. The love story was a little bit cheesy though, might be just me.

Octobre (1994) - 8/10

I saw this movie two years ago in a French class, in which we talked much about the Révolution tranquille (Quiet revolution) that happened in Quebec in the 1960s. To summarize a bit, the Quebec province was under the government of Maurice Duplessis in the 1950s, and this period was called La Grande Noirceur (The Great Darkness, literally). During that time, the Catholic church was the main leader of that government, and the familial and religious values were the only ones present. Women were in their role, mothers of 7-8 children and completely under the control of their husband. After his death in 1959, people wanted to change that. The whole province was extremely behind the rest of the world, stuck into archaic values. It changed a lot during the 1960s. During that time, there was a group of extremists called the FLQ (Front de Libération du Québec) which were separatists (I think) and pretty much committing murders and stuff to get attention and protest against the situation in La Grande Noirceur. The climax of their actions happened in October 1970, the month during which they kidnapped James Richard Cross, a politician (don't quite remember his role) and the Ministre du Travail (Minister of Work?) Pierre Laporte. Pierre Laporte was held by a group of four felquists (members of the FLQ) and was murdered, one week later. It made a huge mess, and the Prime Minister of Canada of the time, Pierre Elliott Trudeau, implemented the War Measures Act (invoked only three times in Canada's history, the two first being the World Wars). Sorry if I told this all messy, but that's pretty much what I remember of the story :P

Octobre is telling the story of the four felquists who kidnapped and murdered Pierre Laporte, of what happened during the week for them. It tells pretty much the story of the crisis, seen from the interior. A great movie for Quebecers and a good representation of a crisis that changed Quebec for the rest of the world.

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003) - 8/10

Johnny Depp is damn nice in that movie. Cool and all, but I didn't find it insane awesome. Could have put 7, so it's a kinda weak 8.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) - 8/10

The birds making pies make it deserve a 8.

Spider-Man (2002) - 8/10

Decent, but not much to say on it.

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) - 8/10
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002) - 8/10

I said pretty much what I had to on the Lord of the Rings trilogy, those movies are very good, but not masterpieces imo.

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007) - 7/10
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006) - 7/10

Maybe the 3rd one was too much. Almost put a 6 on it, and I read they were going to make a 4th. Sadly, I believe they are going on a downhill slope, a bit like Saw did, only less dramatically.

Panic Room (2002) - 6/10

Was ok, but not awesome. Some plot holes, not very thrilling, oh well. Rent, maybe, buy, no.

The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 (2009) - 6/10

I wasn't expecting much, and I didn't get much. Travolta was funny when you thought about Grease when watching the movie. Denzel Washington did quite fine though, but the overall film was cliché. I liked how they understood that going through New York at 160 km/h could obviously lead to a car crash.

There are no movies rated low, because usually I forget them and those are movies I watched in the past few years.

I also rated a bunch of video games, won't make reviews much though:

Donkey Kong 64 (1999) - 10/10

Clearly one of the Nintendo 64's top-5 titles. Awesome. AWESOME.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii (2009) - 10/10
Super Mario 64 (1996) - 10/10

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - 10/10

Deserves the title of best video game of all time.

GoldenEye (1997) - 9/10
Mario Kart 64 (1996) - 9/10
Mario Kart Wii (2008) - 9/10
Paper Mario (2001) - 9/10

Seiken Densetsu 3 - 9/10

Secret of Mana 2, unreleased elsewhere than Japan (and what a mistake!). One of the most rocking games on the SNES. Luckily, translated ROMs are available. Go get it now!

Super Mario Bros. - 9/10
Super Mario Galaxy (2007) - 9/10
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars - 9/10
Super Mario World (1990) - 9/10
Turok II: Seeds of Evil (1998) - 9/10
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess - 9/10
Seiken Densetsu 2 (Secret of Mana) (1993) - 8/10
Super Paper Mario (2007) - 7/10

Phew. That's only a few, I could rate so much more.

First of all, thank god i hadn't watched the trailer before watching this movie because it basically spoils the whole story besides the last 15 minutes. That being said, holy shit was i surprised by this movie. We'd been bombarded by the medias with trailers, images, documentaries for such a long time that i was already tired of the movie before it even came out. Almost didn't plan to watch until my friend and i decided to go 2 days ago and what a great decision that was!

As much as i love good special effects, i kinda dislike them when used for no purpose. This, for once, was a great use, and demonstration, of special effects at its finest. The use of 3D was also displayed in such a subtle way to give depth to the movie and to pull the crowd into the story. As for the story, it was very nice. Some critics refered the plot as not original and "something we've already seen a thousand times" but i have to disagree. Sure anti-war and pro-environment movies have already been done but never exploited from this point of view. I thought the movie was beautiful, heart-warming and clever. What a beautiful comeback for James Cameron!

Re-Animator (1985): 9/10 (trailer)
A dedicated student at a medical college and his girlfriend become involved in bizarre experiments centering around the re-animation of dead tissue when an odd new student arrives on campus. Hahaha, i have been waiting for this movie all my life! This was the perfect blend of horror, gore, humor, nudity and everything in between i have ever seen. The story is quite but perfect for this kind of movie. I must also tip my hat to Jeffrey Combs who plays Herbert West, a bright-young doctor, arrogant and intelligent as hell, who develops some drug to reanimate the dead. Truly a fun flick for fans of the genre. Please watch the trailer i've linked, it's a good, old fashioned trailer who doesn't spoil anything.

GhostDog: The Way of the Samurai (1999): 9/10 (trailer)
An African American mafia hit man who models himself after the samurai of old finds himself targeted for death by the mob. This is one of those movies where you have to be into Eastern samurai culture or Western Hip-Hop (i mean true hip-hop/rap culture) or both to really appreciate this film for what it is. This is a beautiful story of a man who lives by the samurai code. It is hard one to explain but i guess if you like the Wu-Tang Clan, old samurai movies or even maybe Kill Bill (in its essence, not in the violence), you might appreciate this movie. If you enjoy this scene, this film is for you. If not, don't bother watching it, you won't appreciate it.

Have to disagree on that. As much as I can remember, the trailer I watched did not spoil at all. Actually, what I remember of the trailer is that it was about a mission in Pandora and there were blue aliens, and then we could see something going on there but we weren't too sure of what it was. Maybe it's because I watched it without paying that much attention? Anyway, I watched the trailer and I went 8O when I understood that ***SPOILERS*** Jake changes clan and the evil ones are humans.

Haha, well, i think i just hate any trailer that lasts more than a minute because they tend to go a little bit too deep into the story. Last two movies i enjoyed the most on the big screen were the ones i had never actually seen a trailer of (Avatar and Watchmen).

So, next movies on my watchlist:
- Inglourious Basterds (i know i know, i still haven't seen it)
- District 9
- Fear and loathing in Las Vegas (i know i know, i still haven't seen it yet)

So, BoneLESS who seems like a rationally thinking dude rated Avatar 10/10 too, that should silence some of the doubters. The hype IS well-deserved! Watched it yesterday for the 2nd time and apart from the fact the volume was way too high it was just as amazing as the first time. Perhaps there will be a 3rd time in Piteå later in january.

BoneLESS you have (at least) two great movie-experiences ahead of you. Fear A L I L V seems so weird (first impression) I havent yet dared/orkat to watch it. I'm pretty ashamed myself about not having seen Scarface yet :p

Avatar 3D

Hmmm okay. It was pretty cool. I could get used to 3d. Cinema was packed but I didnt hear a sound from the audience because there was an almost constant high audio track. I liked that.

If you strip the story to its basics it HAS been seen 1000s of times, but thats the same with any Hollywood movie. This is the way we "want" to see movies (anybody read McKee?). I liked the small hints and pokes to current/recent politics.

Apart from that a visual bombastic film but being only 20 minutes longer than The White Ribbon (I wrote a review on that earlier), this film seemed a bit too long. Please start hating now. Maybe its just because my eyes started to hurt in the last 30 minutes.

I didnt expect to be overwhelmed (and wasn´t) but it´s a good flick anyways.

11€ for the ticket and glasses is pretty ridiculous. And what the fuck? INTERMISSION? If its David Lean, okay, he has the right to do so, Sergio Leone, too, but this was just annoying.

Anyone noticed the Goofs section of Avatar was wtf? The second one is false, I watched closely and every human has a gas mask in the end. The third one is pure mongoness. The fourth one is contestable. 60% of the goofs are injustified/wrong/whatever, lol. I sent a suggestion on updating that.

Yep, when I first saw it I was expecting some Pocahontas-ish film, and it was indeed. Also, the other day Mila linked this in #across:

I found it quite hilarious. 8)

Lord Of The Rings 1-3 10/10 10/10 10/10 ( watched for like 8 years ago and watched atleast 6times all of them )

They're the only really good movies in the world, that's worth a 10/10.

"In New York City, a young counterfeiter is introduced to the world of underground street fighting by a seasoned scam artist, who becomes his manager on the bare-knuckling brawling circuit."

The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 (2009): 8/10
"Armed men hijack a New York City subway train, holding the passengers hostage in return for a ransom, and turning an ordinary day's work for dispatcher Walter Garber into a face-off with the mastermind behind the crime."

Van Wilder: Freshman Year (2009): 8/10
"Van Wilder starts his freshman year at Coolidge College and embarks on an adventure to land the campus hottie and liberate his school from sexual oppression and party dysfunction."

You found it was worth a 8/10? Imo that was not a super-quality movie...

maybe it was just me... i saw it in theaters when it came out in june 2009, but I remember I had that "I know I'm not going to see a super movie" attitude, maybe it didn't help.

yes, avatar's story has been seen a million times. yes, there were some cheesy moments, but not over the top. an awesome movie nonetheless. best movie i've seen in a long while. to me, it was an 'experience', i was totally dragged into the world of Pandora the whole time, and to be honest, i don't think it went for long enough. once it finished i said to myself: "i want more".

like i've stated here before, i was expecting a flop, but was pleasantly surprised. i've been going to the avatar forums on imdb almost everyday, and have been following it's box office gross alot too. never done for any other movie.

the forums make me cringe, full of retards. people starting the same old threads like "HOW IS THIS MOVIE IN THE TOP250?!?!" and "THIS SHIT MOVIE IS ANTI-AMERICAN, DON'T WATCH IT".

as for avatar's gross, as of the 5th of Jan (19 days since release), it sits at 1.1billion, and is already 3rd biggest of all time. there's no doubt it will pass Return of the King (1.129b), but does it have the "legs" to compete with Titanic (1.8b)? it would be a task, but possible. Titanic was still in cinemas after 40 (or was it 44?) weeks since it's release, which is unheard of.

but i guess the more important question is if avatar grosses more than Titanic, what about other factors like inflation, imax prices etc? but then you could argue that back in 97 when Titanic was released, alot more people were going to the cinemas than today due to things like piracy, 400 more channels on their tvs etc.

either way, Cameron will have the 2 higgest grossing movies.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest was shown in cinemas for 12 years in Sweden. 8)

My guess is Avatar will pass Titanic. It hasnt been running for a full month yet and will roll some more in theatres before going down. Besides blurays and dvds hasnt been released yet. It looks like it will be released in 2 different bluray-versions as well, one in 2D and one with state of the art 3D for home theatres. I think it's just a matter of time before Titanic is #2.

when i was talking about the grosses of Titanic and Avatar i should have mentioned that those totals are the Box Office totals. so yeah, dvd sales etc don't count.

they will make a whole lot of money when avatar hits the shelves.

All you lot are so obsessed with movies. I yet have to seea rating of one of the best films ever made - Heimat. They're rather some sort of mini series, but that doesn't make it less good. When I read Bismuth's ratings, I see no score less than 6/10, which puts forth an interesting phenomenon; the inflation of ratings. 10/10, easy to acquire, but hard to top?

The only movie I would rate 10/10 is Heimat. Heimat 1 gets a 9/10, Heimat 2 10/10 and the last one 9/10 again. If you consider yourself a devoted filmwatcher (not limited to Hollywood), I recommend watching it. You better buy it then by the way.

Oh, and I haven't seen Avatar. =)

haha i agree with you on the easy ratings part. i would probably only rate about 5 films as 10s, but hey, what they rate it is totally up to them. this isn't the place to be rating video games by the way.

Taken - 8/10
is nice action movie that isn't over the top. <3 liam neeson

Deliverance - 6/10
was ok, but was expecting more from it.
