Got dragged by gf to see a few movies that I might not have seen otherwise:

Burlesque - 5/10
Actually not that bad. Kept me entertained enough.

Tangled - 6/10
Visually pleasing and a nice little fairytale story. Funny supporting cast, mainly the horse and the chameleon.

Matchstick Men (2003): 8/10
A phobic con artist and his protégé are on the verge of pulling off a lucrative swindle when the former's teenage daughter arrives unexpectedly. I've been wanting to see this film for quite a while now mainly because I like the old Nicolas Cage (and by old I mean young), I truly enjoy Sam Rockwell and I'm in complete love with Alison Lohman. I'm glad Cage did this film in 2003 and not in 2010 because the man seems to have completly forgotten how to act and especially how to convey emotions. But in this movie, he's great! This is probably Nicolas Cage's best performance in his life (at least that I've seen). The story is quite simple if you look at the big picture but it's filled with intricacies and some interesting character development. The ending is not traditional and quite unsettling but it's definitly rewarding. A beautiful con story with a big heart.

Great one! Usually when I have any expectations about a film, especially high ones, I turn to be disappointed, but this time my extremely high expectations were fulfilled completely :) So beautiful, both amusing and soothing :)

Valhalla Rising: I loved it. The boat scene omg so crazy drifting off, the sounds, so terrifying. Great! Too bad I didn't watch in theatre (I don't think it screened in Germany though..)

The Spirit of the Beehive - 6/10
Slow paced drama about childhood and imagination. Perhaps a bit too slow for my taste. Strong 5/weak 6.

SPOILER:
How could Ana run away from her dad in that type of terrain? You could see 2km in every direction. It bothered me.

Too bad you didnt like it very much. I also think that it was slow and maybe partly strenuous, but it had this really magical touch to it, which reminded me so much of Miyazakis films. That's also the reason why I have no problem with her escaping her father in open terrain. Not everything had to be "explainable". And still there were no hints to magic or ghosts or anything in the film itself.

Brilliant film in my opinion.

True Grit (2010): 8/10
It might just be me and my dysfunctional brain but I really have a hard time taking Matt Damon seriously. By no means do I think he's a bad actor, he's great, but he just doesn't have that hability to morph into characters like Johnny Depp for example. When I look at LaBoeuf the Texas ranger, I see Matt Damon with a moustache, nothing else. And that's probably the only thing that kept me from being completly drawn into True Grit. Everytime he was on screen, I used all my strength not to laugh, let alone smile. Though, being a Coen brothers' movie, maybe it's what they intended with this character; to lighten up the mood because it's a fairly serious film if you omit the Coen's signature dark humor that's present in all their movies (at least that I've seen).

All that Matt Damon thing aside, True Grit is a solid film. The introduction perfectly sets the mood and the characters and once the journey begins, it really becomes a captivating adventure full of surprises. It's a beautiful tale that defines what real courage is.

Black Swan
The most difficult movie for me to rate in a long time. So different, intense, beautiful. At the same time it failed to live up to my expectations. Perhaps I expected something completely else after hearing the opinions of some of my co-workers beforehand. It feels like a 8/10 to me. The King's Speech is still my favorite movie of 2011 (and yes I liked it max before the awards already).

American History X (1998): 10/10
I've never been the biggest fan of movies about Nazis. Sure, their ideology is quite shocking and idiotic but to be honest, that's not what makes me avoid films about the matter. The reason is that in most of these movies, Nazis are portrayed as monsters, cold-blooded killing-machines, with hate as their only motivation. While great movies exist on the subject (The Pianist for example), I feel like very few ever attempted to understand how nazism intimately reaches some people's hearts and why it persists to this day. American History X tries to answer these questions and in the process tries to understand the root of the youth's anger through the struggle of Derek, a young man trying to find some sense of it all. It's just one of those films with intelligent dialogues, amazing acting and a very strong message. A timeless classic. I absolutely loved it.

A pretty interesting plot idea executed slightly better than the average blockbuster. Perhaps a bit too much (or too obvious) exposition. Nice popcorn thriller/action/drama.

Czarny Czwartek (2011) - 5/10
English title: Black Thursday
I don't think it's fair to rate such a brutal, historical film... anyway, I think the screenplay was bad, that's why 5.
It tells a story of brutal riots in Poland in 1970, mostly in Gdynia (the city where I live)

Outlander (2008) - 5/10

Spent whole evening at the theatre.

Just Go With It - 5/10
Strong 5. Nothing special plot wise but it had a whole bunch of laugh-out-loud jokes which worked especially nice in a crowded movie theatre (everyone was my age). Felt a bit too long. Positively surprised though.

Gnomeo & Juliet - 2/10
Voice over in swedish and unlike How To Train Your Dragon, where swedish actually was better, this sucked. Goofy mongo voices and a severely unintriguing story and characters.

the funniest thing is that in Poland (probably other countries too) is that sex is allowed since the age of 15, and porn is allowed since the age of 18. You can fuck, but you can't watch others fuck. Also, you can fuck, but you can't watch a woman's body naked. I love the system

The King's Speech: 5/10.

Generally okay, but not breathtaking (joke intended) and the development of the characters was really thin. I liked the music (who doesn't like beethoven's seventh, second movement?), but it was a bit cliché and the film felt altogether a bit too tidy. No rough edges, etc. The greatest scene was the first. After that all the suspense was gone. The story is great though.
