Good to hear! When writing this sort of music I aim to write appropriately for the instrument/section rather than trying to push them beyond their comfort zone too much. I know the instrumentalists are all up at LMusA standard and beyond sometimes, but there just isn't a need to exploit virtuosic range and technique when I can get a much more solid and pleasing result with more comfortable patterns and tried/true textures.

All this being said, my one silly part of the piece was indeed that horn solo, something that can't really be guaranteed a solid nailing every time. The other hard part was the timpani, but luckily I was kind enough to write all the pedal changes (something often forgotten!) so our timpanist saved some time.

I was speaking with my friend (/Timpanist) yesterday during a piece they were playing (A Beethoven orchestration that i can't remember right now) and he was complaining about how he had to change tunings and pedals without being notified in the piece

Most of the trombone part in Scherzo was about grade 4-5 standard and the m252-258 part would be about grade 8 standard.

We used to have Brent Miller as out principal Timpanist, now I perform with him only at the conservatory etc. He left the youth symphony because he got a job as principal timpanist in an operatic production in Sydney. Other interesting note: He was the Principal Timpanist of the YouTube Symphony Orchestra and Australian Youth Symphony Orchestra. Cool to bump shoulders with these guys!

Alright, I recorded two songs/covers. Took me longer than I thought to get it less sloppy. It's by no means flawless, but it sound okay. Terrible microphone. I want to do better recordings when I visit that friend with the sennheiser again. About the whistling: I never could do that, until I about 4 months ago. So never mind the crap whistling, as I need much more practise. I like how I sound really dutch. Haehaeh

Composition is my major study, so I guess - yes.

I have a book of flute duets on the way and another large symphonic orchestra work of about 8 mins length. For next year I am composing a piece for choir and strings to be programmed on another Europe tour. Not to mention another bunch of film and video game scores on the way this year. I am on the way to compose a full hour of music this semester.

I try to compose very regularly. For instance, in the next two weeks I have to have a 10 minute film scored along with 3 video games and the 8-minute full orchestral work. I also have to prepare my audition on Double Bass with the Queensland Youth Symphony (Principal audition) and my Advanced Aural Studies memorization excerpts. I do have to compose every day at the moment pretty much. I am taking this very seriously, elma is seriously on the back-foot - partly because I don't have a keyboard that can do more than 1 or 2 simultaneous keypresses...

No acoustic piano/grand piano and only midi keyboards

. But still.. DO WANT!

I've been doing some amateur recordings for a while, just for fun. Only got an SM58, 49keys m-audio and a half decent laptop. Mixing/mastering is fucking hard and even harder with Laptop that starts crackling after a few too many tracks/vst instruments

I envy your awesome studio

Anyone recorded at your studio yet? How much for a weekend or hour or what you normally pay for?

Yes, I would love an upright piano somewhere in the studio. I'll get around that one day not too far into the future. Awesome to hear about your recording projects, would love to hear some. Yes, I can jjuuust pay my bills currently (but not more than that) from the income in the studio without a dayjob, but I have to go work part time to pay for cigarettes/coffee/food/life. I mainly record upcoming acts and my standard daily fee is 1250DKK all inclusive.

The NT-1 is one of my favorite condenser mics and I use it a lot on vocals, acoustic guitar and room mics on drums. It's a huge step up from your SM58, for most tasks (I'd still preferably use an SM58 on a guitar amp if I had the choice between the two).

It's not a very characteristic mic, instead it's response seems well-balanced. The advantage with NT-1 in comparison to for instance SE mics in my opinion is the upper frequency spectrum. I think the top in the cheaper SE mics tend to sound hyped. The NT-1 has a great balance. It's not great on percussive sources, I think, unless you are going to compress the hell out of it and destroy transients anyway (therefore the room mic). I never use it for claps or tambourines or such. It can do shakers.

It can only do Cardioid. If you want more flexibility over the polarity, the NT-2A can also do figure-8/omni.

Can't say I know much about microphones and I don't feel like spending too much. The NT2 is DKK1000 more and I don't think I would need it anyway if NT1 will do. I am mainly just interested in seeing the difference between the quality I could manage to produce myself. If I only want it for vocals and maybe acoustic guitar is the NT1 good enough? What about the environment/room you are recording in, does the microphone catch up everything? I don't have any vocal booth (of course) so I'm just wondering if it is survivable with a normal room, which might have some minor echo.

It will definetly be a step up and a nice tool in your home production tool box.

All condenser mics are very sensitive and even with a pattern like cardioid, the reflections from the room will hit the mic from the front a tad after the direct sound and cause phase problems in specific areas of the frequency spectrum. This will be more audible when using compression (also in terms of post-echo). Using condenser mics for vocals (which usually benefits from compression), the acoustics is much more important than the microphone. Using a closet with blankets can help. Using an reflection filter: http://www.4sound.dk/shop/studietilbeho ... ilter.html or a cheaper equivalent will also help dramatically.

So - yes, you can record in your living room. Regardless of the acoustics, unless there's a loud construction site just by your room, you will benefit from the upgrade from SM58 to NT-1. You will catch more of the sorrounding worlds noise. You can defeat this by working on your acoustics like I wrote above.
