Drum & Bass

Post by 8-ball »

Drum & bass (aka jungle) is the ultimate form of dance music, with tons of interesting subgenres.

Post your awesome dnb discoveries here plz. Youtube is ok, I recommend everyone to listen to the songs and then if you like use Soulseek to dl (can always try torrents but it's difficult cause the tracks are mostly scattered over different mixes)

I'm generally into atmospheric stuff with a nice vibe, a bit of nice vox are a good addition sometimes.

Batch 1:
Netsky - Smile / easily my fav at the moment, really puts a smile on your face
State of Mind - Sunking / very original and smooth
B-Complex - Beautiful Lies / similar feelings as Smile
Apex - Falling / very neat track
Black Sun Empire - Arrakis / nice dark stuff
Current Value - Dark Rain / quite awesomely heavy
Camo & Krooked - Mindset / neat tune
London Elektricity - Just One Second (Apex remix) / kings of liquid dnb perhaps
Sub Focus - Smooth / like it says - smooth
The Qemists - Stompbox (Spor remix) / sickest drop ever maybe
Ed Rush & Optical - Chubrub / kings of techstep

Batch 2:
Concord Dawn - Morning Light / BIG tune
Black Sun Empire - Breach / love the progression
Black Sun Empire vs Concord Dawn - The Sun / massive collab of the above two
Dirtyphonics - Bonus Level / 8bit awesomeness
Spor - 1Up / more 8bit awesomeness
Chase & Status - Running / a bit minimal wobbly awesomeness
Kosheen - Empty Skies / nice and soothing vocal track
Pendulum - Tarantula / never fails to make the crowd go nuts in a club
Pendulum - Still Grey / less known track by them but very smooth
Sub Focus - X-Ray / love the bassline
Technical Itch - Portscan / very nice darkstep
The Prodigy - Voodoo People (Pendulum remix) / a worthy remix for a legendary track

Some of these are quite new, some are established anthems. Enjoy and share your discoveries also!

I usualy listen to metal, but DnB is awesome alternative to it. It has so much energy inside! I was on few DnB "concerts" (dunno how to call it) and they were awesome, except that after few hours it sounds all the same. You must be totally stoned to enjoy it for more hours :D

Anyway, you have linked some pretty interesting songs Xarthok, thx!

Drum and bass didn't originate from the amen break, lol.

Modern drum and bass mostly sucks and is full of cliche crap in it. Pendulum and co can suck my dick. Some oldies:

what do you mean by "cliche crap"? drumbreaks are not as simple as they were 10-15 years ago and i agree that there are sometimes just too many different sounds at once. but there's still a bunch of awesome producers. and pendulum, well, of course, the new pendulum stuff is pure shit and has actually nothing to do with real dnb. but the early pendulum stuff is very awesome and was also important for the scene imo. of course it made DNB more popular, the first DNB-album i knew was pendulum's 'hold your colour' too. i think the oldschool boys hate pendulum too much for no reason at all.

listen to that one:

Jonsta - when you simplify music to a genre such as this, finding non "Cliche-crap" is harder than picking a piece of corn out of your teeth with a glass of milk.

It is very annoying when people claim everything cliche-shit-nothing-to-do-with-real-(insert genre here) if band becomes popular and/or makes radio-friendly music. Wannabe underground band fans and co can suck my dick, you are not that cool you might think. This is not directed to any specific post or band or person, but just in general. Also those people who keep arguing about genres like "no no, this is shit, this isn't (insert genre here)", here's a message for you: fuck off.

I never said I only liked underground drum and bass. That's what I'm talking about... I didn't post 1 single "underground" drum and bass track. In fact, all of the songs I posted were released by metalheadz, probably the biggest and most influential dnb label ever. I think it is a shame not to post Goldie when you talk about dnb, because some artists made new school producers life easier. If you listen to some 95 songs and most of recent dnb you can clearly hear the same sounds used all over again. When dnb was growing everyone was using their own style and every track was unique. Get what I was trying to say? This applies to hip-hop as well and crunk and many other music genres. 1 guy remembered to use rim shot breaks in crunk and now every lil wayne or w/e crunk artist is using the same drums, synths and everything. God, even the voice effects are the same.
Of course there is still good drum and bass being made, but it is a lot harder than getting a simple bassline and a breakbeat over it. I stoped listening to dnb because I think it is much harder to make anything original nowadays as most producers follow the modern trends instead of trying to come up with fresh ideas like the old school producers did.

Just my 2 cents :)

ps: luki that beat is a killer!

yes, i agree that there are only a few original tunes nowadays, that's why i prefer darkstep, which is a pretty new genre as far as i know. my favourite label there was Offkey, but the latest releases are shit too. raiden became too soft. :P the only problem is that it's often not possible to dance to darkstep, cause the drumbreaks are so complicated and fast. :P

nice topic, i've been listening to dnb and all its subgenres for about seven years now. dnb was the music that awakened my interest in electronic dance music and for that reason it will always have a special place in my heart. also i've had heaps of awesome nights at dnb parties and got to know a lot of nice people (especially girls) there.

i am still out on dnb clubbings/festivals from time to time and i've seen almost all posted artists (some very nice links btw). i even produced some tunes myself (in ableton and cubase) but lost motivation after a major hd-crash.

even though i liked most of the (older) tracks posted in here sometime back in the days it's quite hard to impress me with a 'regular' trancy, jazzy, liquid or whatever dnb tune nowadays. this of course doensn't mean that i can't dance my ass off to this music, it's just getting boring with time (like Blud said) especially when the djs are bad at mixing (which is the case quite often unfortunately).

these days i prefer the darker, atmospheric techstep/neurofunk stuff. nevertheless i don't like darkstep too much, but of course alcohol/drugs may 'help' (like they do with almost every sound - when i'm really wasted i'm able to enjoy even ultrahard genres like breakcore or hardcore).

anyways, here are some random tunes i like(d) that weren't mentioned yet:
aphrodite - calcutta (one of the main tracks that made me interested in jungle/dnb)
camo & krooked - fatman (i know these guys irl, they're austrian)
ebony dubsters - ra (original sin remix)
dr octagon - aliens (subfocus remix)
sparfunk & shimon - snake charmer
total science - defcom 69
drumsound & bassline smith - cold turkey
pendulum - axle grinder
dj hazard - machete
dj krust - warhead
chase & status - smash tv
sigma - front to back
ben sage - critical mass
break - is this what you want
spor - ultimate technology
bad company - the nine
limewax - agent orange

and of course i have to mention noisia, in my opinion the sickest dnb producers existing. they are producing an immense bandwidth of sounds and genres (including breakbeat and electro/house/techno). here are some of my favourite dnb-tunes of them:
noisia - end game
noisia - believe
noisia - diplodocus
noisia feat. the upbeats - creep out
noisia - stigma
moby - alice (noisia remix)
noisia - block control vip
Xarthok wrote:Drum & bass (aka jungle) is the ultimate form of dance music
well this is pretty subjective (and furthermore dnb ≠ jungle)
Mawane wrote:Pendulum - Fasten Your Seatbelts (Feat. The Freestylers) I think it's my favorite of this genre
your favorite dnb track is no dnb, i would say it's some sort of nu skool breakbeat. for similar sound check out artists like (surprise!) freestylers, stanton warriors, krafty kuts, meat katie or plump djs.

ps: a very nice oldschool dnb set by the great funk d'void: http://www.mixcloud.com/funkdvoid/funk- ... -memories/

when i started listening to dnb this kind of sound had already died out (well, almost), like it was with oldschool techno.

pps: any dubstep fans in here too?

That is just the kind of message I don't like. "some sort of nu skool breakbeat" is just a ridiculous definition. It might not be the most traditional dnb track but if you think dnb as a wide genre like dance, it definitely is. People should accept that every genre develops and elements are borrowed crisscross from everywhere and you don't actually have to line everything out of something if it strictly doesn't fit into the original 100000000 years old form.

Download this, it's the greatest mix I've heard so far. All tunes by Netsky, the most promising upcoming producer since High Contrast came in 2001.

Also check out Netsky's new self-titled album. Awesome stuff.
