Other game communities like this?

Discuss, argue, whine, talk but not about Elma.

Other game communities like this?

Post by DaFred »

Hi,
I wonder if there are other older indipendent games like elma with a similar community like the elma community?
Maybe another mila did modify the game there? :)
Do you know such?

I doubt there's any other 12 years old indie game that has survived so long time :p. If you are looking for something more like elma where the only purpose is to speedrun the game and is "easy to play, hard to master", I guess you should look at some trackmania versions, the only trackmania I've played is canyon, which is a good game. I just wondered if there's another community playing an old bad grafic game for such a long time :)
I guess, as you can see at elma or trackmania, that game must have some highscore or battle function cause without it couldn't survive so long...
Would be fun if there's some other community.. maybe something like some super mario clone speedrun board with a besttimes table or something ;)

Well there is plenty of communities if "bad graphics" is the only criteria.

I guess the thing with elma is that you can create challenging/fun/interesting/unique level in just few minutes, while in other games map design can be very long and tedious process, even 100 hours in some games.

only game i can think of matching your criterias at least a bit, frede, is http://www.thewayoftheninja.org/n.html

example:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VCxf0ZXuQ4k

also uses physics engine and some glitches. even automatic levels can be seen (though not so buggy as in elma)
i hoyled this quite a lot at civil service.. also made some levels with the little bit annoying lev editor. is fun game over all and still very active community.

nethack has a strong community going for far, far longer
commander keen has an active modding community and forum. numerous full game mods have been released, also a multiplayer deathmatch mod. basically it's to keen what EOL is to elma.
turbosliders is an indie multiplayer racing game going almost as long as elma
some old games have active communities purely for the purpose of speedrunning, such as super metroid, zelda, mario, doom, quake

Just ran into UniBall, it's ~20 years old and community-driven for most of it. Recently it got into Steam (free to play). Here's a short article on teh community, from 2009: http://www.wikinomics.com/blog/index.ph ... community/

Sadly theers nobody playing atm when I checked, but they hev some forum activity so maybe they schedule games or something. Waiting to get accepted to teh forum to try and find a game.
