Elma Chess League

Post by abruzzi »

Hello all Elmers!

Together with Spef we're happy to open up a rivalry in the most beautiful game, as many people say so. There have been quite many tournaments held by our eastern fellows in 2005-2007, Elma Chess Tournaments and I have to admit, the climax (if you can use this word concerning any online event) was really fantastic. There was really a lot of kuskis, who played elma reasonably well, but were totally unknown to people from outside the Eastern Bloc. Yet only me and Kopaka were those who took part in that project. I managed to stand on the box for 3 times.

Today we propose a challenge that will involve more western guys, and can be a great break maybe from EOL. You can't catch Spef in internal-ish professionalism? Let's check if you manage to trouble him on the chessboard! We'll tighten up your Elma Ghetto, and for sure produce a bunch of juicy, entertaining encounters, which you could discuss with your opponent afterwards, unlike with another random guy from the net.

As the new month starts, the league is also ready to go! All you need is an account at http://www.playok.com or http://www.chess.com if you prefer different colours. Your new nick should start with 'eol', eolspef for instance, where only (rated) league games shall be played. The games will be collected, and results will appear as soon as possible, also the comments from both parties are greatly aprpeciated. We play 2 games (black and white) with each person from the league, 15/20/30mins per player. It's up to you two to choose your tempo. Hope you will want to join and lock your horns with people you know from EOL.

Feel free to announce the results by posting here, along with the staff we will count up the points and prepare the highlights using nice visual tools.

2 games with each participant every month. 15/20/30mins per player, your choice. Everything is written there.

Okay, nice that many people want to fight on the board, or to refresh their skills! So we're ready for your results and games! Remember that you play 2 games, so you can get 0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 or 2.0 from each match. The table will be updated in the first post.

Don't worry, the level of the tournament is casual and everybody stands a chance. Yes, just catch your opponent and agree that you play a league game. It has to be a 15, 20, or 30 mins per player game. You need 2 games, as black and white. You don't have to play both games at the same time or in tha same tempo. So you can play like today 15' with me white. And after a week a 30' reversed colors. Everything is to be agreed among the two players.

Seems you haven't met Spef yet

Let's also use #elmachess in IRC to get going more easily. The same channel was used during the Russian championships and also whenever kuskis felt like chess (historical info).

A game I won against Adi, I was white. NOT a league game, was 45min time control: http://goo.gl/ntplb

I try to put some pro commentary.
16. Nb1 was a bit slow, I did not find anything during the game. The point was to guard d4 with the bishop so I can play e4. But now adi got some attacking chances.
17...b5 must be bad, giving me the c5 square and making the c7 pawn miserable. Black could/should have played ...c5 at some point.
25. exf5 was me hallucinating, I thought the queen on e7 was hanging. was in time trouble D:
30...c6 was too passive. Better was putting a knight on d5 with ...Nd5 or ...Ne3+ - Nd5. then my bishop would not enjoy his life much and black might be better.
47...Kd7 big mistake spotted by adi right after playing it. 47...fxg4 48. hxg4 would have been a bit tricky: a) 48...h5 49. f5 and
a1) gxf5 50. g5 h4 51. g6 h3 52. g7 h2 53. g8=Q h1=Q 54. Qd8#.
a2) ...h4 50. fxg6 h3 51. g7 h2 52. g8=Q h1=Q 53. Qd8#(again)
a3) ...hxg4 50. fxg6 and my g-pawn is faster.
b) 48...g5 49. fxg5 hxg5 50. Ke4 and black has to give ground.
Very tight game, I only had 2min left in the end. Adi pro.

lost a totally won game on time with akb... had winning moves and a pawn island of 3, but due to low time - fucked up and lost a K+R vs K+R

http://www.kurnik.pl/prze.phtml/215651795?ch

then crunched him as black, basically not letting him out of his base

http://www.kurnik.pl/prze.phtml/215652430?ch

also played with adi, who is very patient and wise, both time we reached a position where I had 3 pawns against a light piece

the first time I lost

http://www.kurnik.pl/prze.phtml/215641853?ch

but the second time adi made a mistake in a drawish (as I later evaluated with comp) position
