Tetris

Post by kuchitsu »

Recently got into tetris. I'm playing here: http://www.freetetris.org/game.php This is the nicest and simpliest online version I could find (in a few minutes of searching). The only hassle is having to turn off the sound every time you restart.
Pls share your records. Here is mine: http://i.imgur.com/JoZzIwE.png
At first I thought that it's physically impossible to play starting from level 10 simply because I couldn't rotate and move the pieces quick enough. But after a few tries I realized that if you reach level 10 when the field is relatively empty, you still have a chance to survive, although it becomes extremely easy to panic and make a mistake.
Also, this game is slowly taking over my mind. Sometimes I find myself imagining these shapes and thinking what's the best way to fit them together. There is something very mentally satisfying about it.

Yeah, that's funny :D It's one of those games that just takes over dreams and you start playing it in head whenever head is idling.

I also found it ezier to concentrate on listening in school if I was playing tetris. It's liek taking up little enough capacity that the parts of brain needed for lysning and learning are free, while keeping you veri simpli entertained so mind doesn't wander off into stuff that would take up too much capacity. Dunno anything about branes, just speculating.
then again i don't know anything
maybe easier not to think abouut alöl things thought than not things thought ... or something..=?

There's very likely a truth in that, and you're absolutely not the only one. The most common activity to do nowadays seems to be knittning. I see a lot of people doing it during lectures and such. For me it's Elma.

I noticed same, pretty much any game like that I start to "live the game" IRL.

Slightly related: when I played bullet chess on lichess few hours a day I started endlessly imagining chess positions while falling asleep and trying to find solutions, it got so disturbing I had to quit playing :S

Also slightly related: I remember when I played mirrored internals a lot, I started walking to wrong rooms to find fridge etc.. vtf (ok I didn't but almost)

Lal, mirrored internals is the funniest example of teh I hev heard. And yeah, it happened to me with chess too, and hexcells, and some other games I forget now.

I'm actually usually looking for games that hev that effect, mainly to poke at while listening to stuff. So, recommendations?

tetris is a great game because of how intuitive it is. if i were to send a game to an alien species i would probably send them tetris.

A nice documentary about the game:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NhwNTo_Yr3k

Used to höyl it a lot when I was young, already had it on my first PC in 1991, that version is visible at 11:41 in the video.
Played even more when cheap handheld "brick games" had appeared around 1993-4, but I don't remember my record.
Also spent many hours with the very addictive Block Out, which is a 3D edition of Tetris.

Tetris is great simple game. I hoyled it hundreds of hours some 10 years ago in aapeli/playray: http://www.playforia.net/play/dualtris/. Didn't really try other sites. Only complaiment there is that highest level 15 isn't hard enough (https://youtu.be/59irVPOqI1w?t=218)

I remember getting really hooked on single game. It felt awesome when I finally was able to keep playing on highest level 15. However, after being able to play about 30 minutes on highest level, there wasn't much point to try again. My average speed was 2 pieces per second (by playing "only" 4 rows). Probably couldn't have improved much anymore.

Maybe I would've played longer if didn't find elma. Anyway 1 vs. 1 matches were the most interesting for me...played about 7000 of them in total. Here some example:

Have you guys heard of tetris by arika? has the hardest shit i have ever seen for a tetris game, apparently only six people have reached the grandmaster level and "beaten the game", here is a vid of a guy doing it, at the end he has to play invisible tetris.

There is a game on facebook called "Tetris Battle Drop" which is 1vs1 pvp game.

You start at rank 1. If you beat or lose to the opponent before 40 seconds you rank up or down 10 ranks. If you beat or lose to the opponent in one minute you rank up or down 5. If you beat or lose to the opponent before 1 minute and 30 seconds you will rank up or down 2 ranks. The match last max 2 minutes and the one with most lines taken within 2 minutes wins.

When you do 4, 3 or 2 lines in once, or combo stuff, you´ll send opponent additional lines he have to blow up by hitting the line at a special tile.

Everything is controlled with mouse, and the gameplay is super fast. Can easily terminate 4 x 2 lines within 15 sec.

I´m at highest rank possible, which is 1110 or something.

That guy in video which Ramone showed was bat shit crazy though. Holy fuck.

Here is a documentary on the world's best tetris players and the very first world tetris championship on the original nintendo.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2RadEMnmG6g

It is a actually super entertaining movie, I would think maybe insane guy could do a similar documentary with elma? anyways they now have a world tetris championship every year here in america on the original tetris, a guy named Jonas has won it 6 out of the 7 times (he is in the documentary). Here is the most recent 2016 world championship match:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DdfRQjb5o9k

Surprisingly after playing a lot of different versions of tetris now i find the original nintendo version still the best. you can play it here on pc:
http://www.nintendoemulator.com/nes/3100

my best score is somewhere in the 300,000 in this, i usually start on level 9 but you can start on level 18 by holding down "z" and trying it at the same speed as these guys if you want.
