Should "psy" be acceptable?

Post by Madness »

Hello everyone. It's been a long time ago since the usage of "psy" meaning "possible" was decided by acrossish grammarians to be grammatically unacceptable and whoever dared to use it in that sense, was severely mocked, ridiculed and had garbage thrown at them. But as you know, language evolves and if many people start using a word in a different way to convey a certain meaning, it eventually becomes accepted as standard. Psy is not an active player any more and most newcomers don't even know who he was (who was he anyway?), so I believe there wouldn't be too much confusion.

So the question is:

Should the usage of "psy" meaning "possible" be grammatically acceptable?

Pros:
01) It's logical
02) It's easy to remember
03) It's shorter than the current acceptable abbreviation "poss"
04) Saves you several thousand key presses a year
05) Extends the life of your keyboard
06) Saves you money
07) Saves you time
08) Extends the life of your fingers
09) Saves you several trips to the doctor
10) Makes your life easier

Cons:
01) Some old-schoolers might get confused and think that you meant that the player psy is better or that a level is psy's etc.
02) That word makes you think of psychopaths (?)

Please, vote and share your opinion here. The majority will decide.

I never liked the word, but dunno if what you said - it being frowned upon - has something to do with that. Impsy is a great word though. I prefer pos for possible.

"Psy" makes no sense lol. It has no relation to the word "possible." Maybe "pys" would be acceptable.

Igge wrote:I'd like to borrow this thread and share with you all my hatred towards the word 'psy'. First of all, it's not a word. Second, it's a person. Third, it has nothing to do with the word 'possible' at all. If you don't want to use the word 'possible', at lest use something similar, like 'pasibel' or so. However, I have nothing against the 'word' 'impsy'. I'm totally fine with that one.

impsy = impossible.
psy = a person.

I think most elmans know this but don't give a shit, it's not a commonly used abbreviation in the scene (and it's quite meh too imo).

Everything should be grammatically acceptable as long as people understand what it means when you use it.

well when some nub saying "impsy" in easy level, i'm mechannically parrying "psy", cuz "im" is just an common grammatical prefix related to all words which start with "m" or "p", and other negative words start with "in" iirc from english classes. So, lets consider both "psy" and "impsy" words in this thread imo then

I dont understand the discussion. Been using psy and impsy ever since I first balled (around 2003?) and no one ever complained.

ez psy

edit: whats the origin of psy btw? I always thought it came from psy's hard levs being impsy and "psy" derived from that. Maybe someone more oldschool can help?

It's a shortening of his original nick psymorph.
Was it cast for the mass who burn and toil?
Or for the vultures who thirst for blood and oil?

if you mean, what's the origion of impsy, it's explained in this thread.
SveinR wrote:
Kopaka wrote:actually impsy means impsybility if I'm not mistaken, which is an old word for a pipe, but I know many uses it for impossible, I even do so myself
Impsybility isn't an old word for a pipe, it is a pipe (WCup317). Which was based on the older pipe Impossibility (MOPOCO08) (of course you already know this Kopa). So impsy obviously means impossible.

You can of course use it somewhat like Bismuth said, for instance in a battle ("dame impsy timz"), but it still means impossible.
SveinR wrote:
teajay wrote:either way, I always thought - and I still do - that impsybility was a pun on psy's ability on pipes. errr?
Sure. Because psy was the first to finish Impossibility. And of course, he went on to win the World Cup event on Impsybility.
