Best RPGs?

Post by 8-ball »

Which are the best RPGs ever in your opinion?

I would go for Fallout 2, followed by Fallout 1 and Planescape: Torment. To me a RPG means a good and original story, detailed dialogues where you can choose whatever you want to say, NPCs with different personalities and behaviours, a balanced skill system and game endings according to how you have influenced the world during the game. No game has done that since Fallout.

I guess the best story would be Planescape: Torment, but my favourites are in the jrpg territory, Suikoden 2/Front Mission 3 for PSX, Golden Sun and Fire Emblem for GBA.

I enjoy the linearity of japanese rpg more than the sandbox style (might & magic, oblivion).

Well, you might say I'm oldstyle, but for me the best role playing game is without doubt FF7 (I hadn't been playing video games much since this, 8) ) exepting elma, a little bit...

I picked out my old PS few weeks ago and started doing some FF8 from the beginning. imo really nice game, so much to discover and the story is quite nice too.
Zelda OoT to N64 is also max good.

Ya i'd have to say finaly fantasy 7. I think i played it for playstation 1 didn't stop playing it till i had all my chars 99 and boosted there str to max or whatever it was took me a while but enjoyed that game to the max. FF8 was cool too but i think i only rented it so didn't get to finnish it or not even half way. ff8 better graphics and card game was fun but ff7 still best in my opinion

I didn't find any base of arguments in your comment either besides that you like x more than y.

the .hack games (infection, mutation, outbreak, quarantine) seem to be rRuLZe, quite bad but somehow very addictive, just played 8 hours teh other night. They should be available at reasonable prices these days. They were released like episodes, you can import your saved game from each game to the next one.

You probably need to watch .hack//SIGN series first to reach full enjoynga, there are many references. Each game comes with one episode of .hack//LIMINALITY OVA.

i used to love rpgs back in my school days and i must say i was a great fan of such a gaming genre! had a huge tower of psx rpg cds, even more i could handle lol and i liked to collect each and everyone cd i could get. from my experience i can no doubtedly say that the best rpg games for me were these listed down by priority:

- phantasy star 2 (genesis) man i love this game!
- phantasy star 3 (genesis)
- ff8
- legend of legaya (psx) not very popular but max battle system
- rings of power (genesis)
- lunar silver star story complete (psx)
- grandia (psx)
- star ocean (psx)

Star Ocean is for Super Nintendo, Star Ocean: The Second Story is for PSX. ;)

Star Ocean is very nice and cute classic style rpg, it's not officially released outside Japan but there's a very good DeJap translation available.

Yeah it's ok if you like that sort of thing.. I don't like the way the creatures follow with you in lvl. So most places will have creatures around your lvl, instead of some places for the easer creatures and some for the tough..
Your gfx card must really suck:/ I run oblivion on my radeon 9600 pro:/ Every gfx setting on low:/ but it's playable...

Another great rpg is the space rangers games ( only 2 games). It's a turn based space game, where you fight some robots and stuff...

A long RPG thread and noone has mentioned Baldur's Gate? BG2 are without doubt the most engaging game I've ever played. Very deep characters, amazing dialogue, fairly complex, and overall had an amazing depth regarding both story and gameplay.

Other good wRPGs worth mentioning are Arcanum and Icewind Dale.

Basically everything released after Neverwinter Nights 1 is a big slap in the face and made me lose all interest in D&D based RPGs.
