The problem with this forum software is the lack of post ratings. No, it's not a real problem when there are no mongos among the users, but there are plenty of mongos here, such as myself. If we had a karma system, most users wouldn't want to post anything useless in the fear of downvotes. It would also encourage people to post more insightful, useful and witty posts in the hope of upvotes. If someone would receive too many downvotes, they could get some sort of warning or ban, I don't know.

Right now we have an everlasting postcount contest. Showing post count under everyone's nick may serve a good purpose in theory (more posts = more experience = probably a good post?) but in practice it simply encourages spam.

I know spam hasn't really been a problem lately, but it comes and goes.

Meh. I like this forum as it is. Some spam once in a while, but who cares?

I'm not implying the possibility of change, just pointing out the problem. :) I guess it wouldn't work too smoothly to add a rating system at this point anyway. I also agree with igge, but many people obviously disagree.

Problem with that is that there are no truly active admins. But I'm doing a temporary experiment now, of posts having to be approved if user hasn't posted before. Not sure right now if ordinary moderators can do this, but I would think so.

I'm pretty active on lauta, I'd say; I check it several times a day in between reddit pages at least. I'm up for just allowing/disallowing new users, if there's a way to only give me those powers.

yeh, they're good in setting up the feeling that you are needed and/or important somewhere
also, during your forums years you have possessed the ability to invent an anti-mock answer in a merely brief while

They're good for talking to nice people with whom you share common interests.

After 9 days I think we can say that this has been a big success (unless someone desperately misses the spambots). Following the evolution of the spambots in this period has been quite fascinating: It actually appears that most of them have been "scared away" or have given up trying to register or post. However, a new breed of spambots have arrived, a more creative kind, who fills in every possible field in their profiles, even including avatars, with some writing sensible first posts.

Examples of these poor spambots who never get to complete their purposes in life:
Profile 1
Profile 2, with trial post

How will that change matters? I see from their first post that they are spambots - ez delete. If they are not spambots, no reason to bother new users with more posts needing to be approved.

How the spambots solve the CAPTCHA letter stuff I dunno... it's possible to make them harder, but I find that makes it too hard for humans.

there are some captcha recognizing bots. they don't work perfectly, but i guess with some tries they'll get it right most of the time. you could implement something like "how much is twentythree plus fortyfive" or dunno, there are many new captcha-questions and stuff, maybe they are harder for the bots.

I meant that the number of mods being able to accept/reject new posts should be increased, not the number of posts needing to be approved.

Why would that need to be increased? There's only like one acceptable new post per month.

Yes that orange sign stucks after every new post in general and advertising sub-forum. But once I click at "Mark topics read" it goes white or whatever the colour is again.
